This was an extremely slow read. The sort of book you start, put aside and forget to read on.
The protagonists needed two thirds of the book to somewhat 'grow on me' and the enemies are far more interesting than the 'heroes', and they hardly have any pages. The main protagonist is not a very coherent thinker and not the material a ruler - especially an elected king - should be made of. The worldbuilding lacks and the protagonist's home country remained an empty blueprint. The story only developed a grip in the last chapters, because once you have gone that far, you want to know the end, too.
And this effect of ending in a sort of cliffhanger, made me pick up the second volume, too.
