The spring-freshened valleys, sun-kissed meadows, and moun tains dark with pines, awakened his characteristic love of nature, while the ruins that crowned his native hills fostered in him an inborn tendency to linger over the romance of the past. Scheffel's boyhood was marked, not only by un common diligence and ease of apprehension, but by an inner devotion to intellectual pursuits which caused him to spend many of his leisure hours in sketching or in the study of history and literature.
