This is a good book to use in the United States. It has a short overview of Africa: it's history, it's varied tribes, it's environment, plants, animals and birds. I'm not sure how good it will be for African children.
While the classroom setting is fictional, the information provided about Africa is non-fiction. Includes a wonderful porquoi fable about why hyenas have such small back legs and horrible coat.
Lots of text so not suitable for beginning readers. Written during the late 1980s and reflects the social norms of that time, i.e. the children learning about Africa are all black, Europeans are all portrayed negatively, etc..
