തലമുറകളുടെ കഥ പറയുന്നു. ചാമിയാരപ്പൻ ഒരു ഈഴവ ജൻമിയാണ്. മതം മാറി തിയഡോർ ആകുന്നു. കുറച്ച് രാഷ്ട്രീയവും യുക്തിവാദവുമൊക്കെ ഇതിലുണ്ട്. അയിത്തതിന്റെ മതിലുകളിൽ നിന്ന് ചാടി മറുപുറം കടക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം ഇതിലുടെനീളം ഉണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകൾ പങ്കജാക്ഷിയുടെ മകൻ ചന്ദ്രന്റെ കഥയാണ് പിന്നീട് പറയുന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രൻ ഹോങ്കോങ്ങിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യാൻ പോകുന്നതും റോസ്മേരിയുമായി പ്രണയത്തിലാകുന്നതും അപകടത്തിൽപെട്ട് മരിക്കുന്നതും ഇതിൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നു. ചന്ദ്രന്റെ മകന്റെ നാട്ടിലേക്കുള്ള തിരിച്ചുവരവിലാണ് കഥ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. ചിലർക്കെങ്കിലും ഈ കഥ വളരെ വിരസമായി അനുഭവപ്പെടും.

കുറച്ചു ആളുകൾക്ക് ഈ നോവൽ വിരസം ആയി തോന്നിയേക്കാം. എനിക്ക് ഈ നോവൽ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ഉള്ള എത്തി നോട്ടം ആയിരുന്നു. തിയോഡർ ചാമാരിയപ്പന്റെയ് കണ്ണിലൂടെ സുബേദർ മേജർ വേലപ്പന്നിലൂടെ ചന്ദ്രനിലൂടെ തിയഡോർ വേൽ വാഗ്നാറിലൂടെ. സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്കു മുമ്പ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജാതിയതയും ജന്മിത്വവും വിഷയമാണിത്തിൽ. എന്ത് ചെയ്തും ജാതീയതയിൽ നിന്ന് മോചനം നേടാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ഈഴവ ജന്മി കുടുംബമായ പൊന്മുടിയും അതിന്റെ ഇടയിൽ അവർ വരുത്തി വയ്ക്കുന്ന ശാപങ്ങളും അവസാനം ആ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ തലമുറയുടെ ദാരുണാവസ്ഥയും ഇതിവൃത്തം.

I was fortunate in buying a copy of the book with the original cover painting by Balan on the day it was released nearly 25 years ago.. I had worked in Malappuram over five decades back and had to interact with the local people a great deal. I had also travelled in the neighbouring areas in Palghat. There is no doubt about the authenticity of the place and people in the book. It is a highly personal memoir --with the background of a society undergoing social and political change -- told with a great deal of insight in the characteristic style of Vijayan. A book which is simultaneously both powerful and evocative
