Touch, feel, and hear the baby animals on every page of this interactive, sturdy board book, packed with appealing pictures, tactile textures, and adorable baby animal sounds.
Patricia Hegarty began working in children's publishing more years ago than she cares to remember and is now Editorial Director at Caterpillar Books and Little Tiger Kids. As an author, the range of subjects has been wide-ranging—pirates, princesses, trees, and bees have all become firm favorites.
It was entertaining to watch my daughter's reaction when I read this book to her. She absolutely loved the textures and the animal calls in the book. The book went over puppies, penguin chicks, lion cubs, elephant calves, and kittens.
(5☆ Would recommend & would read again) Great book to teach animals. The tactile and audible aspects help little ones engage in the book. This can be a little annoying for parents, especially if kids repeatedly press the buttons. But the love for books that this book creates is worth it.
We've had this book for years. It is a cute introductory book on animals for little kids that includes elements of both sound and touch to expand the learning.
My 11 month old LOVES this book. There are 6 distinct animal sounds when you press a button, as well as fur to touch for the various animals. Highly recommend!
Other than not wanting to listen to animal sounds on repeat, this book offered interactive, multi-sensory input to learn about animals and their noises.
This was my daughter’s first favorite book! For awhile, she wouldn’t let me read anything else! I was surprised that she sat through reading it, since, as a 9-month-old, the pages were much longer than she would put up with for any other book. I think she loved the pictures and bright blocky backgrounds as much as the sounds. She eventually loved the textures too. I love that the syntax is simple, but doesn’t shy away from animal-specific vocabulary.
By now, it's clear that I love books that allow my tactile senses to be tantalized. Not only does this adorable board book appeal to those, but it also allows me to have glimpses of five different animals while stroking their fur and hearing the sounds they make. An oval shape on a puppy, a penguin, a lion cub, an elephant, and a kitten allow readers to touch their fur or skin and cause that sound. The final page pulls all the animals together. The only thing that was problematic was that I sometimes needed to press really hard or find just the right spot to hear the elephant's trumpet or the kitty's meow. I wouldn't want little ones to think that's how to handle an actual animal, and I also might be concerned about whether they'd have enough patience to keep pressing gently until they could hear the sound.
I really like all the animal sounds in this book! My mommy helps me push the buttons since I’m not quite strong enough yet, but I like to point at where I know they are! I like to try and make the animal sounds before we push the button and the furry, soft, and velvety textures of each animal are fun to pet! I always bring this book to my mom to read because it’s my favorite!
I read this at a storytime for babies and their moms. Even the little baby who was too young to properly do the animal sounds when encouraged, she sure loved yelping and making baby sounds when prompted! It was adorable.
