In honor of Halloween, my very favorite holiday, I’m releasing one of my short stories as a single… what follows is A BOY’S TOTEM.
A bullied boy in 1980s rural Iowa who makes a unique friend who isn't like any of the other children, not at all... and exactly how different is only revealed when the bullying threatens to turn lethal.
This particular story, which was first featured in my horror collection THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, is special to me. That’s all I can say about it. That’s why I’m releasing it as a standalone. I hope it may mean something to you, too.
If you enjoy it and have time, please leave a review and let folks know.
Todd Travis’ interests include conspiracy theories, the poetry of Michael O’Donoghue and pop music and movies of the 80s. He is single and moves around a lot. His current whereabouts are at this time unknown. He dislikes cable news, views cellphones with suspicion and don’t even get him started on email. He also believes poker is not a sport and therefore should never be allowed on ESPN.
A family moves away from Iowa and from an abusive father. Brad, the son is bullied in his new school by some older boys and called a retard. How can he get rid of the bullies and what happens to the father they left? Great coming of age tale with some nasty scenes, an uncanny friend and a fine twist at the end. Excellent prose, good plot, absolutely captivating, in short, highly recommended!
I've just read Travis' novella Derelict and then noticed he's posted a short story for free also to celebrate the pumpkin day. Another impressive read, a coming of age story about overcoming abuse and violence through making unusual friends. Strong writing and characters. Very well done. Recommended.
