Sea Shapes by Suse MacDonald has not won any awards however the author is an award winner. This book is perfect for pre-K and kindergarten.
This nonfiction book shows what sea shapes are. The author parallels shapes and ocean animals. For instance, the shape star and star fish.
This book has great illustrations and is very bright and colorful. It also does a great job paralleling shapes and sea shapes that go with it.
This book would be great to reinforce vocabulary of shapes, sea animals, and shapes in general. It also can help students see how living things have shapes too.

The summer reading program this summer (2010) is Make a Splash with Reading, so story time today was 5 fish books. I liked this one a bit more than average. It had nice artwork of sea animals and plants with bold colors. Add to that, each page focused on a shape. One side showed how the shape was hidden in the animal (such as a crescent for a dolphin), and the the facing page had a sea scape picture for the reader to find the shape in.

Good for:
-Basic introduction of shapes: star, circle, semicircle, square, heart, triangle, spiral, fan, oval, diamond, crescent, hexagon,

Very simple book, would only be appropriate in a k-1st (maybe 1st) grade class

Meets kindergarten math standards of using shapes to create other shapes

Activity:
Have a variety of precut out shapes, have students use these to create their own pictures.

This is a picture book that shows how different sea animals look like shapes. It can be used for science, math and reading. I used this book to introduce main idea to my first graders. It's a cute book but I feel like some of the animals don't really look like the shapes and it's stretching it a little!

This would be the perfect book for a child who is a fan of the ocean and the creatures that live in it. With colorful illustrations, a child can easily begin to recognize their shapes and how they may relate to their favorite animal!
