The Kingstone Bible Trilogy is the most complete graphic adaptation of the Bible ever published. #3 in this epic trilogy begins in the gospels with the birth of Christ, covers the extraordinary life of Christ, the birth of the subsequent church, letters of instruction to the church and closes with a grand finale artistic exposition of the book of Revelation. This one-of-a-kind hardcover graphic Bible is illustrated by top comic artists in stunning, full color art.
Co-writer Ben Avery is a lead writer and editor with Kingstone Comics. His comic book career began when he was selected by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin to work as the script adapter of the comic book fantasy mini-series The Hedge Knight, based on novellas by the New York Times bestselling author. Post-Hedge Knight, Avery went on to co-write/co-create the critically acclaimed Lullaby and The Imaginaries for Image Comics, co-create and write the children's literature inspired fantasy The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles, develop and write the historical epic Kingdoms for Zondervan, and the sequel mini-series The Hedge Knight II published by Marvel Comics.
Co-writer Art A. Ayris combined a passion for both comics and Scripture in penning large portions of the Kingstone Bible. Ayris' writing spans 25 comics and graphic novels, several film festival wins, as well as Best TV Movie in Hollywood's Next Success contest with his screenplay Alas Babylon.
Impressive rendition of the NT as a graphic novel. They played the epistles straight, which I appreciated, and Revelation's art was, uh, certainly dramatic.
This three volume collection is really terrific. The quantity and quality is absurd for the price. I can’t believe how much awesome content you get for the same price you’d pay for a coupe of trade paperbacks from Marvel or DC.
I was wondering how they would handle the epistles since there are huge sections of the New Testament that don’t really lend themselves to a graphic novel treatment (no dialogue or narrative). They did a good job of illustrating the content and telling the stories of the authors and showing their historical context at the same time.
I want to give this 5 stars, but I don’t think I can on this final volume. All three volumes utilize a handful of artists, and that wasn’t so much of a problem in the previous volumes where characters changed frequently, but in this one you get many different versions of Jesus, Paul, and the disciples and each artist renders them differently. This happens in all comics, but spider-man has his iconic costume no matter who is drawing them. Trying to figure out who Peter or Paul is can be a little more tricky. Thankfully Jesus usually gets his trademark blue sash to make things easier.
The book of Revelation is wild. They leaned HEAVILY into a horror aesthetic and every word is illustrated literally. The drawings are nightmare inducing and I’m sure the eschatology will be likewise for some people.
It was good. Thorough. The Book of Revelation section was intense. I do recommend it as an alternative to Sergio Cariello's Action Bible as a comic book version of the Bible because it goes into more depth, especially with anything in the New Testament that comes after Acts, but I actually liked the layout and illustrations more with The Action Bible. The illustrator in The Kingstone Bible who drew the section on Revelation, and other sections, is very, very reminiscent of EC Horror Comics, which is mostly a good fit for Revelation, not so much for other sections. His drawings are so stylized for horror that he has trouble illustrating things not of that genre in the same or other sections. But, for the most part, I enjoyed all three volumes of The Kingstone Bible.
These people are used to drawing very muscled people and dark creatures in dark settings, and it sometimes surprises to see this style set over biblical stories or books that wouldn't warrant that. Still, quite a great set!
The hardcover volume includes comic books previously published as The Christ (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), Acts (Acts), The Letters (Romans, 1&2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians, 1&2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1&2 Peter, 1 2 3 John, Jude), and The Revelation (Revelation) for a total of 49 stories.
