The bungalow, in all its various forms, has existed since the early seventeenth century. From its origin as a Bengalese hut, or "banggolo," made of mud, thatch, and bamboo, to later developments as a one-story structure surrounded by a colonnaded veranda, and the subtle permutations exhibited in
designs such as the Frank Lloyd Wright style "prairie house," the bungalow has become one of the most frequently adapted house forms throughout the world and the most popular home style in the United States. It is probably the only dwelling that, in both name and form, exists on every continent (the
word bungalow has entered over twenty languages).

planning, and in Africa and India the bungalow reveals the way in which an international market economy can transform the housing and lifestyle of an urban bourgeoisie.

I had this book on a shelf for years. It went onto the “get rid of” pile a few times. The last time, I’d brought it home from my office so I could put it on my stoop for somebody to take. One night I can’t sleep and it’s the only book near the couch I’m lying in.

I read a little, you know, just to try and put myself to sleep. Next thing you know, fully engrossed. I really liked this book. A great symbol of colonial world history, well discussed and all that. Give it a try if you find yourself awake at 3 a.m…

It was surprisingly worth the read, thumbs up.

A very in-depth look at bungalow architecture from a socia-political viewpoint. Great photos, too.
