Il libro, uscito a breve distanza dalla morte del celebre direttore, oltre alle conversazioni da cui prende il titolo, raccoglie anche alcuni interessanti approfondimenti biografici, per esempio sul rapporto piuttosto torbido tra Karajan ed il partito nazionalsocialista. Sebbene scritto da un valente musicologo, il volume pecca di un carattere un po' troppo encomiastico, indugiando talvolta su considerazioni mistico-filosofiche di dubbia attendibilità, anziché approfondire dettagli tecnici o notizie storiche che sarebbero certamente più stimolanti per un lettore non sprovveduto.

I was never much of a karajan fan in the first place. But I disagreed with much he had to say about making music. The pursuit of his brand of perfection sucked the life out of music.
