Prisongate: The Shocking State of Britain's Prisons and the Need for Visionary Change

Rate this book
Drugs and violence are rife in our filthy, overcrowded prisons, and women and underage prisoners are treated badly by staff and other prisoners alike. The role of the criminal justice system in our society is to protect the public, and the prison's role in this system is to prevent the next crime, or the next victim, by helping prisoners to lead useful and law-abiding lives both in their time in prison and afterwards. Statistics show they are failing, and this book discusses how and why.

it took me all month to read this. Not because it was boring, but because the content was tough. I know the state of prisons in the UK is much better now, as this is quite out-dated now sadly, I can't help but see comparisons to other public sectors in the UK. Buses, NHS, Police, Fire Service, they are all getting massively undercut by the government and this also leads to staffing issues which then causes the service to falter and not perform well. And it is heart wrenching.
