A condensed, more understandable retelling

After listening to this retelling, I realized that the legend of King Arthur paved the way for the superhero movies we love today. This is a good intro to classic literature to young kids.

King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone is a very popular traditional tale. I think that this particular version of the book would be great for young readers because of its length, vocabulary level, and great illustrations. The story pulls you in when Merlin comes to save King Uther's son at the beginning of the story. Merlin proclaims that Arthur will be King of England, but only if he saves him now. Arthur is saved, but we are left wondering how Arthur will take his rightful place as king. The end of the book resonated most with me when Arthur pulls the sword from the stone. When he does this, he does not understand the magnitude of his actions. Everyone was surprised he was meant to be King, everyone including himself.

The only issue I had with the story is that I wanted more from it. I felt as though the story abruptly ended, however I would still recommend this book to others.

I would use this book in the classroom in order to explore more complex ideas and work through a bit more challenging vocabulary. It would also be relevant when working with compare and contrast elements because there are many King Arthur stories that they could compare it to.

I really liked this book. I think it would appeal greatly to boys. The pictures depicting of horses and knights and dangerous adventures would encourage children to be brave in my opinion. The illustrator did an amazing job with a lot of the key events within the story, but furthermore gave the reader a picture of what exactly is going on. In my opinion it makes kids willing to be proactive and actually do something worthy of courage.
