I have yet to read a Liz Curtis Higgs Bible study that has not pulled me more deeply into God's Word, and her latest devotional does not disappoint. First, each devotional is a short study of one particular Bible Verse. Almost all of the verses are ones that most Christians have either memorized at one time or another or are ones with which they are very familiar. I found many of them to be among my favorite Bible verses. Second, Liz takes each verse and breaks it in to phrases and sometimes single words and explains it more fully based on her extensive study of the Bible. It made me take a more in depth look at what this verse really meant. Finally, Liz includes a tip at the end of each short study to help the reader learn to memorize Bible verses.

I would highly recommend this devotional to anyone who wants a short devotional to use each day during their devotional/prayer time.

A new Liz Curtis Higgs is a treat indeed and I had 31 Verses To Write On Your Heart in my hands! As I cracked the spine of my e-edition (Side note: who were these spine-crackers that inspired this shocking practice and phrase *gasps*?!), I knew I was in for a fun challenge!

Each day (chapter) she tackles a new verse, familiar and often said to be a favourite by Christians, and breaks them down. Word by word, she infuses new meaning into words I know so well! She simplistically conveys massive and important concepts and has 31 great tips to memorise scripture! Tucked at the end of each one is a way to apply the verse to your life today as well as a study section at the back of the book to dig into each verse deeper. It really has it all and you can do a day in about 10 minutes, which is great!

Favourite lines include:

“As a writer, speaker, teacher, and, most of all, a woman who loves Jesus, this is my constant prayer: “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.” When His loving words are in our minds, they are far more likely to pour out of our mouths.”

”Any verse with an exclamation point warms my heart…”

”If is an open door, revealing endless possibilities and overflowing with hope.”

”Tiqvah, the Hebrew word for “hope” or “expectation” in this verse, literally means a “cord”, something a believer can hang on to.”
Liz can really make me giggle! The anecdotes, filled with humour, not only liven the book up and cheer the reader on but also help make the Bible truths stick! She is such a great storyteller!

I loved this book and have already recommended it to several friends! It is a delight from start to finish and it thoroughly refreshed my soul whilst challenging me to reach for more in my relationship with God. Five out of five!

First sentence: Snow was falling thick and fast across my windshield on a cold February night many winters ago.
31 Verses To Write On Your Heart is a devotional book for women; I'd almost say for women and men but she does tend to address her readers as women.

Each "devotion" or each "chapter" tackles a specific verse word by word. The goal isn't just devotional reading or even meditation. It is memorization as well. Each chapter concludes with a tip to aid you in memorizing Scripture. Each chapter also includes a brief prayer.

Here's one of my favorite prayers:
When I read Your Word, when I study Your Word, when I memorize Your Word, when I live Your Word, Your love and faithfulness will beat in my heart so loudly others may hear and see Your truth and be set free. Oh, let it be so, Lord!
also
When I read Your Word, fill my mind with wonder. When I see Your creation, fill my heart with awe. When You pour out Your mercy on me, fill my soul with gratitude and, yes, a healthy fear of Your power and might.

She begins the book by sharing her experiences with readers--how she came to read the Bible. She shares how passionate she was to read the Bible for the first time. She continues, "With each passing month I feared that my enthusiasm for the Bible might wear thin. That once I’d read every page, the stories and lessons wouldn’t be as exciting the second time, let alone the tenth time. Now I know the truth. Whenever I read a familiar verse, God reveals a richer, deeper meaning."

I can echo her sentiments. Though our background stories do differ, our passion for the Word of God make us kindred spirits.

The thirty one verses examined in this one: Proverbs 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Proverbs 29:25; Jeremiah 29:11; Proverbs 9:10; Philippians 4:13; Proverbs 4:23; 2 Timothy 1:7; Romans 8:28; Proverbs 31:30; Psalm 46:10; Zephaniah 3:17; Proverbs 22:6; Isaiah 41:10; Philippians 4:6; Proverbs 15:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Philippians 4:8; Proverbs 31:25; Isaiah 40:31; Proverbs 27:17; Isaiah 26:3; Philippians 1:6; Joshua 1:9; Proverbs 30:5; Micah 6:8; Isaiah 43:1; Proverbs 15:23; John 14:2; Lamentations 3:22; Proverbs 3:5.
If you’ve been reading the Bible for a few seasons, is there one verse you cherish above all others? A powerful statement that nourishes and sustains you year in and year out? Words you’ve posted on your fridge, stitched on fabric, written on greeting cards, included in your e-mail signature?

God-fearing is a phrase we don’t often hear anymore. Sounds a bit dated. Old school. We’d rather focus on loving God and being loved by Him. His love is a glorious truth, but it’s not the first thing we need to learn.

Unless we point people to Scripture, we’re giving them little more than our opinion.

Open the Bible to any page, and your eyes will land on truth. Every time.

From God’s point of view, love and faithfulness are inseparable. One can’t exist without the other. Because God loves us, He remains ever faithful. Because God is faith itself, His love is never ending.

What will this day look like if you remain in awe of the Lord, never forgetting who He is or what He can do?

As long as we’re here, this world is where we’re meant to be. Although we are surrounded by constant temptations and pulled this way and that by our selfish desires, we are called and equipped by God to choose wisely.

Whenever the truth of God’s love is yanked from our grasp by a culture that focuses on negativity and majors in cynicism, it’s time to dive into His Word and be refreshed.

It’s His Father’s house, and it’s our Father’s house. It’s home. Not our temporary earthly home, but our permanent heavenly home. The Greek word moné simply means “abode.” Nothing fancy, just a place to live. Then came the Latin word mansio, which referred to a traveler’s resting place. As centuries passed, the English word mansion took on a grander meaning, leading to a materialistic view of heaven that Jesus never intended. Our future lies with our Master, not our mansion. What matters is that He lives there and so will we.

I had the pleasure of reading this book titled: “31 Verses to Write on Your Heart”. The book is refreshing and inspiring to curl up to read, especially when you need a pick-me-up. The book brings out a coziness that touches your heart and soul. When browsing through the Table of Contents, I was elated to read further in what this book has to offer for encouragement. I love the way the author relates each chapter with a scripture along with the beautiful illustration.
What caught my attention was the following passage from the book: “Here’s why reading the Bible matters. When you spend time in God’s Word, life starts making sense. The broken places inside you begin to heal. Darkness and discouragement give way to the light of hope. You have a new reason to get out of bed in the morning. Your purpose becomes clearer, and your desire to make a difference grows.”
The author brings heart to heart messages that oftentimes goes unnoticed or unattended. This book is worth reading and meditating on in its entirety. I enjoyed the tidbits and tips at the end of the chapter as well as a place to write a different version of scripture down. Yet, the author has always did a splendid job in touching lives through her writings, being such an inspiration to all. I would encourage others to read this book and share with others that have groups, it’s great ministry. I highly recommend this book.

31 Verses to Write on Your Heart would make a thoughtful addition to anyone’s personal Bible study time! Liz Curtis Higgs is a renowned Bible teacher and women’s speaker and has a special gift when it comes to explaining Scripture.

Breaking them down in an easy-to-understand format, each of the 31 verses chosen is expounded on and kept in context, even giving the Hebrew or Greek definitions of certain words. Various Bible translations are used to further enhance the study and understanding of each verse. I have found that using this format of word-for-word study helps me to more easily memorize verses.

I highly recommend Higgs’ illuminative 31 Verses to Write on Your Heart! This is a valuable addition to devotional time. Included are 31 memorization tips, as well as a handy Study Guide and Notes section.

I really have enjoyed most everything that Liz Curtis Higgs has written. This book is wonderful! It is simple, to the point, and well organized. She states a verse, talks about it, then gives you a tip to memorize and a way for you to copy down the verse. I love this because while it sound so easy sometimes it is hard to figure out a verse to memorize. This book gives you great ideas and will keep you motivated. This would be a great book to add to a Bible study, or personal study every week. I am looking forward to using it as a personal goal.

The cover of this book greets you with a beauty and peace that draws you right in. Then when you open the book and read the introduction, you find yourself completely set up to have your heart shaped by what you are about the read and end up in the same peaceful place that initially drew you in. Each section of this book is so well written, that it is hard not to appreciate the lesson being shown to you. Personal stories, examples, and biblical explanations fill the pages making the lesson on each verse entertaining, humorous, and enlightening. Each verse is broken down into sections with a very educated explanation and expansion underneath. This shows you not only what verses you should write on your heart, but also why it is so important to do so. At the end of each section there is a blank space for you to write your favorite translation of the verse from this section. This is an excellent tool to help you learn the verse and find the wording that most resonates with you and will therefore help you to remember it better. Each lesson ends with a heartfelt prayer that wraps the section up beautifully. In addition to these helpful lessons of each verse, there are a lot of helpful resources to guide you on how to memorize these verses. Lessons that you can take with you after you read the book. One drawback for me is in the design of the book. They placed the study guide at the end, so in order to review the questions you have to flip back and forth to read the question and then reference the section it is referring to. It would have been more beneficial to have the questions directly after each section to help guide your personal study. Altogether this is a lovely little book to help you study God's word and help you commit to memory verses that will stick with you for the rest of your life. I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review.

My Review:

As a woman I know how hard it can be to be the answer to everyone's problems but when we need help or encouragement it's hard to find someone to be there for us. This really becomes evident when you become a wife and a mother. Liz Curtis Higgs seems to understand the struggles we go through as women and in her writing I have definitely been able to find solace and even encouragement through my daily life.

In this the latest of Liz Curtis Higgs she encourages us to memorize scipture and she insures that once we have a reread that same verse for the second or even third time we will have a deeper meaning and feeling from it. This is God's intended purpose and He wants us to grow closer to Him in many ways and Scripture reading and memorization is a better way to connect to Him.

I'd been looking for a reasonably simple footing in attempts to memorize Bible scripture. I feel that it's important to have God's words to turn toward at all times and to share with others off the top of my head. But let's face it, with all the busy these days something so seemingly simple can be a real challenge.Often having a goal and not having a good way to get there can be very discouraging to the point of never starting.

I didn't want to just memorize scripture starting in the New Year of 2017 and forever on but to also discover what certain verses meant in the Biblical context. I also wanted to discover what they mean to me. Liz Curtis Higgs book "31 Verses to Write on Your Heart" has been the solution to all my wants and needs, offering not just a look at scripture but a study guide and a number of ways to never forget it as well!

Liz is an exceptional writer. She writes in a way that would speak into the heart of a very close dear friend. She introduces a verse, often with a personal story, and then break it down word by word, listing meanings, and applications we can apply to our lives daily. Every verse ends with an application prayer and a tip to memorize it. The verses chosen for this book are encouraging, uplifting, convicting, and a reminder of God's love and grace.

She encourages the reader to read and study the book in what way works best for them. It could be a chapter/verse a day, week, or so forth. This book could be studied in a group setting or alone during quiet times. It works no matter what way one would go about it.

I discovered I learn best visually so placing scripture in places I'll see it often or recreating the verse in art leaves a lasting memorable impression in my mind. This book is pairing wonderfully with my journaling Bible! I feel that my walk with the Lord in studying his scriptures through this book are is providing a deeper understanding, fresh look, and incredible new passion that I didn't have prior to.

I would definitely recommend this book to those of all ages. It would be a wonderful book to pick to start the New Year off well. Get a copy for yourself, for a friend, and tell every sister you know!

Have you wanted to memorize scripture? Did you need help figuring out which verses to start with and how to begin the process of memorizing these verses? That's the basis of Liz Curtis Higgs' book 31 Verses to Write on Your Heart . In this book Higgs takes 31 devotional size chapters to explain some of the most popular verses for memorization in the Bible, and she gives one big tip on how to memorize within each chapter. For those wanting to use this as a daily devotional, she also includes reflection questions to go with each chapter at the end of the book.

I find that I don't have a ton to say about this book, but I wanted to write down just a couple of thoughts on it.

First, I found it exceptionally annoying that she continued to use different translations to define the words in the verses. I personally would have rather seen her pick a translation, stick to it, and perhaps use some actual definitions and exegesis of the passages that these verses come from. Her method of defining and exploring these verses was really light and shallow.

Second, these are verses that most long time Christians should have memorized. This makes this an excellent book to give a young Christian. It would be a good devotional for a disciple or as part of a graduation gift for a teen. It would also be a good secret angel gift for a partner that you might not know as well.

Overall, this is not a bad book. It's just an average (light) women's book and something that is very appropriate for a younger Christian.

Liz Curtis Higgs has been one of my favorite authors and Bible study teachers for years, especially with her Bad Girls of the Bible series and The Girl's Still Got It. Her newest book is classic Liz. In 31 Verses to Write On Your Heart, she breaks down 31 of our most favorite Bible verses, often examining individual words in order to teach us what the verses mean. Each chapter is extremely brief, probably the length of reading a blog post, which makes this book a particularly good fit to read one-chapter-a-day, giving you time to really let the lessons soak in.

To her great credit, Liz chooses extremely well-known and well-loved verses and gives both context for them (something we occasionally lack when we quote these particular Scriptures) and fresh perspective (something quite remarkable given that most of us have read these verses many times). I particularly love how she draws from many translations to give nuance and clarity to particular words or phrases in Scripture.

Each chapter ends with a brief and lovely prayer, as well as some helps to memorize the Bible verse in the form of a memory tip, the verse typed out in the NIV version, and then space for you to look it up and write it in a different translation. She also gathers all the memory tips up and re-lists them at the back of the book and includes a study guide with two questions per chapter to help you go deeper or for use with a small group.

31 Verses to Write On Your Heart is for new believers and long-term Christians alike and would make a lovely gift to encourage someone. It would also help to anyone wanting to develop the discipline of Scripture memory!

I grew up in Oklahoma. We went to church every Sunday, and I went to the youth group on Sunday evenings. We read Christian books, and sometimes, we heard sermons based upon the Bible.

I loved the Bible early on and studied it like I studied my school lessons. When I was 19, my Methodist minister visited me in the hospital and introduced me to my life verse, Isaiah 40:31.

Yet, those who wait for the Lord;
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles;
They will run and not get tired;
They will walk and not grow weary.

Although I did not intentionally memorize that verse, I read it so many times that it is alive in my heart. The verse’s promise became my treasure.

When we moved to California, Keith and I became Awana leaders. There was a great emphasis upon Scripture memorization. We did not have the advantage of Liz Curtis Higgs‘ insight to help the youth with their memorization efforts, and many times, the memorization was tedious work for them.

Higgs approaches Scripture memorization in a unique way. She illustrates the Scripture with an anecdote and then takes the reader on a journey through the words, their meanings, and their everyday applications. It felt much like praying the Scriptures. In fact, each devotion ends with her personal prayer and a memorization tip.

At the end of the book, she lists the tips again and provides a study guide for a more indepth look at the Scriptures.

There’s a rhythm about Higgs that delights me. On Proverbs 4:23, she writes, “Each time we love and trust instead of fret and fuss, God changes our stop-and-go into flow.” (page 35)

I am returning to Scripture memorization. But this time, I’ll think of it as writing treasured Scripture upon my heart.

Or shall I call it heart engraving?

This is such a wonderful book for focusing on Scripture! It's different from any other book I've read about memorizing Scripture and I loved how well thought out it is.

Liz shares the 31 Scriptures that will bless our hearts and that she feels are most important to memorize. I absolutely agree with her about her choices. Some I recognized right away, others I didn't, but all are wonderful reminders of how much God cares about us.

She starts each chapter with the Scripture to focus on then writes about that Scripture. She also gives tips for memorizing - some of which I hadn't heard of and that were very helpful to me - plus an area where we can write out the Scripture in our preferred translation.

One thing you can always count on when you read a Liz Curtis Higgs book is that she is going to share a lot of her own heart with you and that's exactly what she does in this book, too. She shares stories from her own life and it makes the book so much like you're chatting with a best girl friends. Truly, who hasn't read a book by Liz and come away feeling like she's their new best friend? That's what makes her books so enjoyable and memorable, in my opinion.

I love this book and it's helped me to start memorizing these special Scriptures in a new way. I understand what I'm memorizing and gained new way to memorize and remember them. This is truly a book that will transform your look at Scripture and how important it is to memorize it.

I love this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars

When I read a Liz Curtis Higgs book, I feel like I'm reading a letter from a dear friend. I've read many of Liz's books through the years including her children's books, The Pumpkin Patch Parable, The Pine Tree Parable, and The Sunflower Parable. Whether fiction, nonfiction, she always keeps my attention with her compassion, her wit, and her masterful use of the English language. Through it all her love for Jesus and for women shines through.

Liz has a way of just reading my mail. She understands the struggles we women have, and her books reflect it. 31 Verses to Write on Your Heart is no exception. These verses were collected from readers, and Liz has dissected them using multiple Bible versions and translations. She breaks down each verse word by word and brings out the full, rich meaning of each verse. She also offers background information and suggestions for memorizing each scripture beginning with short ones that mean the most to us individually.

This is warm, witty, and a book that I enjoyed.
Thank you Liz!

Liz Curtis Higgs has a signature engaging, humorous style. Her style drew me to this book on scripture memorization. Liz polled her readers for their favorite Bible verses and chose 31 verses to break down for memorization. She breaks down verses bit by bit, providing a mixture of historical context, personal stories, and devotional encouragement. She asks thoughtful questions to help the verse sink deep into your heart. What I really like about this book are her practical tips for memorization, such as “Choose the best time of day when your mind is the sharpest,” “Set an alarm to remind you to review your verse,” and “Say the verse aloud.”

I grew up memorizing scripture as a Lutheran school girl, and I still recall many verses from my childhood. What this book did for me is breathe new life into verses that seem so familiar, like “Be still and know that I am God” from Psalm 46 and the famous promise of Romans 8:28. I believe that scripture memorization is important for me and for my children. As I use the techniques in this book, I can hide God’s word more effectively in my heart and be a better teacher to my children.

I received a complimentary copy of the book for review purposes from Waterbrook Multnomah.

There is so much more to the Bible and than mere words. Every single chapter, verse, sentence and word has meaning for us all. Anyone can memorize a verse, but knowing just how scripture can help us in our daily lives, and how it can provide us with all the answers we could ever need is much more important. This is what is at the heart of this book.

The author delves deeply into 31 of the most uplifting, profound and important verses in the Bible. She does a wonderful job of breaking down each verse to explain just how God is speaking to each one of us through His Word.

The study guide, at the end of the book, is a valuable addition, as it gives readers a concise version of each of the preceding chapters. This is a great way for readers to study each verse further, either on their own or in a small group.

I loved the author’s writing style. It’s encouraging, thoughtful and conversational. Reading this book is like taking a Bible study class with a knowledgeable woman of God. I highly recommend 31 Verses to Write on Your Heart. Thanks to Blogging for Books and the publisher for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book!

Liz is one of my favorite authors and she has a real talent for unpacking a lot of insights in just one verse of scripture. She brings that talent to this devotional book.

Liz dissects each verse section by section and provides a depth of meaning for each verse by examining the nuances of each word including different Bible versions, the original words in the Greek or Hebrew and the overall context for when it was written. At the end of each chapter she includes a short prayer, a tip to help you memorize scripture and encouragement to actually memorize it. She also encourages you to rewrite it with your favorite translation of the Bible.

Overall there are 31 different verses to take you through an entire month. Liz Curtis Higgs is a wonderful student of the word and a fabulous teacher. You’ll be sure to gain much richer insights with her guiding the way than you would have ever caught by reading that same verse on your own.

It's a light, easy and quick daily read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Blogging For Books program in exchange for this fair and unbiased review.
