This is labeled as a "Ready to Read Level 1" book but from the text in my opinion it is more like the level 2 books. There are 'some' repetitive words and phrases but there are quite a few 'harder' words like parade, hotel, marching, arrives, floats, New Orleans etc. Words that a level 1 reader would have (in my opinion) a hard time reading on their own.

Eloise and her Nanny are excited for the 4th of July parade. They dress in red, white, and blue and go down to watch. Eloise is rather a 'hyper' child so Nanny is always telling her "no" or "get down" etc. Was a cute story but after we were done my grown special needs son giggled at the puppy in it but then said "Whew" "wild" I laughed and said "She was pretty hyper wasn't she" he nodded.

This book has a few specialty words that children won't know, which adds some complexity to a simple plot: Eloise and Nanny watch (and Eloise energetically participates in) a Fourth of July parade. I like that the art in these newer books stays true to the original artist's style, which, of course, it was supposed to. I like that Nanny and Eloise look like real people...tummies, fly away hairs, clothes coming untucked. A nice alternative to weird child-as-presexy-adolescent illustrations. (I have a lot to say about this if anyone wants the whole speech.)
