I purchased this book to read in digital format while hiking the Appalachian Trail. It served its purpose perfectly - enabling me to read about a tree and then go out and search for it on my daily walk. Ideal for reference. Great pictures. Fantastic depth.

I purchased this several years ago as I wanted to identify the trees on my property and in my neighborhood, and finally read it through from front to back. It is thorough, well-illustrated, and easy to use.

This volume is encyclopedic in scope. This is its virtue and its fault. The average reader may be more interested in only the trees in their area rather than say the tropical species of Florida if their area is New England. The author points out similar species to what ever tree he is covering and most importantly the illustrations are drawn. Photos never quite work in plant identification guides as plants can be so variable, drawings show what the generic plant really looks like. For those who want to know everything this is the book to read.
