Renowned horticulturist Don Hastings and his son Chris present step-by-step instructions for year-round care of lawns, gardens, flowers, and houseplants from Virginia to Texas.
I have so many gardening books, that I truly don't know what I have unless I sit down and look. Despite all of my books, from general to specialty books, this is the one book that I pick up and use consistently.
Month by Month gardening in the South is simply like having your father/grandfather/farmer neighbor/etc. handy in a quick reference book. With my month by month book, I am never at a loss for what comes next. I always know when to plant, when to prepare, what to pick up at the store. With it's simply month by month arrangement, further broken down into grasses, vegetables, roses, trees, etc, you can always quickly reference what to do next. Topics needing further explanation are always clearly explained on a particular month, most often about the time I'm trying to figure out what exactly to do. If it doesn't happen to be the right month, there will be a handy reference to the expanded explanation in the month you are in.
I've read and re-read this book. It's a great resource for those who want to garden well in the south. I only wish there were more pictures and a few more details on some specific plants.
