Cassandra Carmichael has had a terrible year. Her parents are getting divorced, destroying whatever façade of family they had left. College is so much harder than she anticipated. Freshman year sucks so far. And on top of that, her roommate is the most obnoxious human on the planet. But tonight, all of her problems are going to disappear when she sees Jake Turner and his band play live at Graffiti’s Battle of the Bands. Cass knows three very important facts about Jake and this 1. She loves Jake Turner. She’s loved him since she was five years old and he moved in next door. 2. Nobody has ever been cooler than Jake Turner. He’s perfect boyfriend material to complement her brand new rebel without a care reputation. 3. Jake Turner will erase every bad memory of this year and give her the happily ever after she’s secretly always longed for. If only she could find him. And talk to him. If only she could get Troy Cameron to leave her alone. Just because they sit by each other in English 101 does not mean they’re friends. Or that she thinks he’s hot. Or that he’s exactly the guy she needs tonight.
Rachel Higginson is the best-selling author of The Five Stages of Falling in Love, Every Wrong Reason, Bet on Us and The Star-Crossed Series.
She was born and raised in Nebraska, and spent her college years traveling the world. She fell in love with Eastern Europe, Paris, Indian Food and the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka, but came back home to marry her high school sweetheart. Now she spends her days writing stories and raising five amazing kids.
I keep loving all these stories and it will very totally sad to see them go. There's only one more and that will be the last. As all others, this one was fenomenal. I loved every single thing of it, even the end. The end was the best part, I almost cried of so happy it made me.
Cass's life has been a blur this year, 1988, everything went down after her mom found her father cheating with the neighbor. But she just needs one night to get all of that out of her system. She always had this crush in this boy, but then she notices this other boy that everything he says goes under her skin. That's Troy. Troy Cameron is the typical jock, but a different jock. He has a soft heart and since he saw Cass for the first, he fell. Cass needs to see him in order to fall back, right? So Troy's job is to make her see him, at least just this one night.
All these stories from Love in the 80s have different things that made them special. I loved this one's end. I would love for all stories to end like this one, but... if wishes were fishes, right? Anyways, I really liked the story, but just like the story before, this one doesn't exactly place me in its year, 1988, other than the music, of course. The characters say things from the song Need You Tonight, but the song is never played in the story, which was a bummer, because the song is the bomb. Apart from that, all was good. 80s kid, read these books.
Even though I did not live through the 80s, I enjoy 80s music, movies and seeing the 80s trends! Rachel Higginson incorporated the 80s feel, fashion, slang terms ...in an entertaining way without trying too hard. I chuckled when the characters said "the bomb, bangin', dyno, out of your hair" :D
The story reminded me of an 80s rom-com with its fun twists, the relentlessness of the hero, the sass of the heroine and the endearing ending! I enjoyed the back-and-forth banter, the characters, the plot. The writing was easy to get into and I'm looking forward to reading more of Rachel Higginson.
I had so much fun reading this and give it 5 Carmichael-and-Cameron, orange-mobile, waffle stars! :D
I have nearly made my way through the Love in the 80's series as I bring you 1988 - the second to last year in the 80's. It's the year 1988, and Cassandra Carmichael is going through a rough time as her parents are divorcing and her whole life has gone up in flames. She has changed personalities and no longer the peppy cheerleading type. During her English class, she seems to have attracted the attention of Todd who is a jock and as Cassie believes is not her type of guy. Her dream guy is Jake Turner, her next door neighbor and bad boy extraordinaire, he is also a musician and plays in a band called Fresh Suicide. His band is playing in the Battle of the Bands competition, and Jake wants to meet her backstage, this is finally her chance to get lucky with Jake. However, love likes to play tricks, and when Cassie and her friend Gina need a ride to the competition, Todd and his friend Matt step up their games. As they journey along the way to the concert, Cassie is about to realize that maybe Jake isn't her Mr. Right and that Mr. Right has been in front of her this whole time but due to her closed walls, she just never gave him a chance. Will her guy that she needs tonight be Jake or Todd? Find out in 1988: Need You Tonight by Rachel Higginson - Book #9 in the Love in the 80's series. 1988: Need You Tonight was the perfect college romance read complete with Music and the Goth Era.
Short, sweet and cute. Cass and Troy were adorable with their unexpected love story. Cass, so caught up in her own head with her parents impending divorce had her sights set on former next door neighbour Jake. It feels like her infatuation with him increased so she could hang on to part of her life when things made sense. Troy was the annoying classmate, trying to get her attention. I really enjoyed the fact that Cass was a goth girl, difderent from the ladies in previous books. Not that they're awful, but it's a nice change from the norm.
As always, Rachel Higginson just speaks to me. There’s something about her writing style— specifically how she writes male/female interactions that just always hit the mark for me. Now to be honest, I don’t know if I cared one bit about the 80’s paraphernalia mentions (since it’s all about being set in the 80’s), but Troy and Cass shown through any of those trappings and made me happy. Honorable mention to bestie Gina, who seemed pretty awesome and not at all a grating best friend. This was short, sweet, and totally tubular. Heh.
Quick novella that is a fluffy romance. My only problem with it is that some of the dialogue feels more like the 90s than the 80s. I think bombdiggity was the one that threw me off. Of course I was born at the tail end of the 80s so the term may be historically accurate.
There were some minor copyediting mistakes that detracted from the story too.
This one was definitely fun, and I loved both the main heroes since the very first page. Once again, it was quite predictable, but written in a way that it definitely made me invested.
Cute love story. Short and sweet, and not quite instant love. Just a boy flirting with a girl that is more annoyed than catching on. But he wins eventually.
This idea is super cute...several authors each take a song from the 80s and make a short story around it. In this one, Need You Tonight, Cassandra has dreams she plans on having come true soon. Dreams about a hot singer. But things never go the way a young girl thinks they will. So much packed into such a fun read! As with other Rachel books, she spins things around right in front of you, but you don't realize how much magic she gave you during the whole book till the main character does. The guys in her books are always keepers ;)
It's really hard for me to rate this book. The previous installment was so freaking awesome and I had just only started breathing again. And because of it, this story fell short a little bit. But... Yes! There's a but! But that doesn't mean it was boring or poorly written. On the contrary, the story and its twists managed to capture my attention right from the beginning. It had amazing characters, witty dialogues, funny moments and a pinch of angst. Pretty great mix, don't you think?
My only complaint about this story was that it was over too quickly. Rachel Higginson has a way of writing characters you want to spend weeks and years with....you want to call them up to hangout on a Tuesday night or invite them to your wedding. This story was no exception and I kinda hope these characters drop by for a cameo in another book ;)
This is such a fun book, total nostalgia overload for me. Those flushes of romance as you grow up, not seeing the guy right in front of you. No social media and mobile phones getting in the way of relationships developing and that freshness of romance that you felt way back when. A great fun read i just wished it was longer, but still fantastic
Rachel Higginson has yet to disappoint me in books. Another great story that was entertaining with great characters that you wish were real and a sweet romance. I really thought this was a great read and I just really enjoyed stepping into the 80's for a bit.
This was a classic Rachel Higginson and I absolutely loved it! I know it's a novella and all but still it was way too short for me. I need it longer because Cass and Troy equals SWOON.
This was a cute story. At first it was a little hard to get into because it was heavy on the 80's lingo and silliness but once I set that aside and realized I was reading a book about the 80's and it should be cheesy, I enjoyed it.
