Sarah Long worked in publishing before giving it all up to move to Paris with her husband and three children. She is the author of And What Do You Do? and The Next Best Thing. Following several years of the Parisian experience, she now lives in London.
Bought from the charity shop as it's about a stay at home mother, like myself. Unlike myself though, both of her childre are at school & she lives in Paris. Her life is a bit more glamorous than mine, but underneath, it's the same quest for an identity away from mummy that I'm striving to seek.
I love a good fluffy read but this just dragged on and on. The characters were unlike able and the pretentious setting a bore. Not worth the time it takes to read
I really did not think I would enjoy this at the outset as the characters seemed so unsympathetic, but it slowly draws you in and the complex lives of the protagonists become both realistic and fascinating. A very satisfying if unconventional read
People need to stop being so harsh about this book! Yeah it's pretty straight forward and easy to read but that's a good thing! I thought it was funny, cleverly written in it's use of tense and what the characters were thinking, and also it's quite thought provoking. Laura is the female protagonist and she's likeable at first, you sympathise for her. But then oooh, you wonder what the hell she's doing. Yet I didn't once find her annoying, she was just down to earth and makes mistakes like every woman really. She was brash and very English which I loved. The only downside to this book was I'm not good at speaking French, even the little phrases were a complete mystery to me so maybe Sarah Long could have included a clever way of translating more of them. Haha, also Flavia. Great 'baddy'.
Was not expecting much from reading the reviews, but was actually pleasantly surprised. Was a fun, light read that is good for the morning commute when you might not yet be at full brain capacity!!
My own fault - I expected an expat memoir but got chick-lit instead. Too light, full of cliches and mistakes: the family lives on the 5th floor in one chapter and on the 3rd in another. Irritating.
