Victoria Woodley is done with men. Fresh off a dating nightmare, she flies from her home in Chicago to Scarlet Springs to take part in her best friend’s wedding. Who picks her up at the airport? Eric Hawke. Of course. She made a fool of herself over him last time she was here. He’s cocky, charming, and sexy as sin. But the fact that she’s attracted to him is all the proof she needs that he’s bad news. She would ignore him if she could. But he’s the best man, and she’s the maid of honor. She can’t just tell him to jump in a lake—especially not when her lips are locked with his.

Eric isn’t looking for a relationship. Between running the firehouse and volunteering for the county’s search and rescue team, he has enough on his plate. He doesn’t need to get tangled up with a woman from the big city, especially one whose idea of roughing it is going without designer coffee. Yet from the moment he looks into Victoria’s big brown eyes, the attraction he feels is too strong to deny. Faster than he can imagine, the spark of desire that has smoldered between them since the first day they met will flare into full-blown passion.

But can Eric convince Victoria to set aside her doubts and trust him with her heart before their time together runs out?

"Oh, my God!" she whispered. "I'm being carried by a fireman!"-Victoria

Oh My Gawd!!! I loved this book!. I have been dying for Eric and Vic's book since I read Barely Breathing(book 1) back in May. It was everything I hoped for and more. I have had people tell me this series is just so different from Pamela Clare's I-team series. Well I haven't read that series yet(it's on my tbr list) so I don't know what it's like. I know it's suppose to have a lot of action in it and suspense. And while I enjoy action with my romance too, this series to me was more like a pure romance. Where the story's main focus is on the love and relationship of the main couple. Both books in this series have been sweet, very romantic, lower on angst, and high on super hot men in uniforms. And boy do I have a weakness for men in uniforms!

 photo 502247_zpsxhonc8qe.gif

Sorry I think my brain stopped working for a minute there! Is it hot in here?

Eric really stood out to me in book one and I couldn't wait to get my hands on his book. He was so yummy. Eric was this sexy fireman with a heart of gold. He was cocky, playful, and outgoing. He was respectful to his mama, brave, loyal, caring, and he really knew how to work his hose! lol.

"Bumper stickers? I put them on my truck because I think they're funny, not because I'm advertising." "I'm surprised you don't have one that just says, "Hey, I'm a fireman. Want to play with my hose?" He laughed. "That's pretty good. Do you want to play with my hose?"-Victoria and Eric

 photo 38238_zpsfjitf3je.gif

"How about we fuck until we break this bed?"-Eric

Victoria (Vic) was sassy, outgoing, and fun. She had been hurt really bad by a guy she was dating in a way that would mess anyone up. It almost ruined her life, but Eric helped her to open up again and reclaim her life. Vic was a little scared and insecure at times, but it was totally understandable. Vic and Eric has some burning heat. Pamela Clare really knows how to bring the passion. I loved every single minute of their relationship. I felt really connected to them as a couple and I was deeply invested in their HEA.

"Just do something for me before you go. It will only take a few minutes." "Sure." His lips curved in a sexy grin. "Sit on my face."-Eric and Victoria

I love that this book has so much romance to it. In some books the couple's love almost feels like a side story to the plot but not with this book. Their love is front and center and there is plenty of relationship build up. And never once was I bored or did I feel like the book dragged. It grabbed my attention and held it til the last page. Even then I wanted more. I loved getting to Catch up with Austin and Lexi. I loved getting to read all about their wedding. I really liked Chaska, Sasha, and Jesse. I am hoping they each get their own books but I am hoping for Chaska's book first! Eric and Vic's HEA omg swoon. It was so good and sweet. I enjoyed every minute of this book including all the minutes I drooled over that cover! OMG that cover is hot! I can't wait for the next book.

"Oh, come on. I haven't had you inside me for thirty-six hours, and I'm dying. Isn't it your job to save people?" "Well, if it's a matter of life and death...." He pulled his T-shirt over his head, revealing that amazing torso of his. "You just lie back. I'm a professional. I'll take care of everything."-Victoria and Eric

Firemen are my favorite color

Hell yes they are!

We first met Eric Hawke and Victoria Woodley at the end of Barely Breathing, the first book of the series. These two got off on the wrong foot from the word go and you know what? That kind of “I hate you but I’m still wildly attracted to you” romance tends to work for me every time.

In that moment, she made herself a promise. No matter what Eric said, no matter how nice he seemed, no matter how good he looked without his shirt, she was not going to sleep with him.

Sounds like a plan.

First things first; Slow Burn is a book for people who really, truly, down to their souls appreciate a thoughtful and well written romance. I’m not talking about the kind of romance where a jealous and pregnant ex causes problems for the couple when there otherwise would’ve been smooth sailing. I’m not talking about a contrived and overdone plot device that only serves as filler and drama.

No.

Pamela Clare can write. Nowhere is that fact more apparent than this book. Victoria and Hawke are fleshed out, relatable characters and their story sucked me in from the very beginning. Given the fact there’s no major drama or conflict, it should’ve been a slower read for me. Instead, I found myself captivated by the beautifully written, yet entirely uncheesy (thank you, Ms. Clare) love story. The lack of unnecessary drama made getting to know these characters a complete joy.

I have to give a huge shout out to the descriptions of all things Colorado the author brought to life. The last book in the series was heavy on the technical terminology of climbing and the terrain. This book benefits from a much lighter hand as far as the technicalities go while the beautiful scenic depictions add another layer to the story.

This is the strongest adult contemporary romance I’ve read in a while. Slow Burn can most definitely be read as a stand alone and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to finish Victoria and Hawke’s story. I can’t wait to see what’s up next for this series.

There are very few authors who write contemporary romance (or ANY genre she writes in) as well as Pamela Clare does, and her Colorado High Country series is easily one of my favorites. The way she tells a story is exactly the story I want to read; no contrived drama, no silly misunderstandings to fill the page count. Nope, the stories she tells are filled with romance, passion, humor, and characters I ALWAYS fall in love with!

Eric and Victoria are amazing. They are from different worlds - one from a world of money and one not - but both are solid. Down to the core they are good people, the kind I'd be proud to call friends or family. They have their issues but those issues don't define them or keep them from being happy, and that, in my opinion, is what makes them so real and why I fell so hard for them and enjoyed their story so much.

The bottom line - I absolutely adore Scarlet Springs and the people who live there. Truth be told, if I could find such a place I'd do everything in my power to get there, and get there fast!

A definite winner!

It doesn’t matter which Pamela Clare’s books I pick, I always find them very addictive that once I start, I can’t stop. And Slow Burn is no exception. This book had me hooked from the first page, kept me smiling, laughing, and sometimes crying, and never let go until the end.

I don't want to sound like a broken record repeating all the good things everyone else has said about this novel, but I really need to say this—Slow Burn was remarkably wonderful! It touched my heart in so many ways and I loved everything about it, from the author’s excellent writing to a compelling plot to endearing characters and to a nice pace.

This is a love story between Eric Hawke, a dedicated firefighter, and Victoria Woodley, an easy-going city girl.

Victoria works for the biggest public-relations firm in Chicago. When her best friend, Lexi, is marrying her high school sweetheart, Austin (from Barely Breathing), she takes a week off work and flies to Colorado.

After experiencing the worst nightmare of her life, Victoria has sworn off men… until Eric. He is the best friend of Austin. She met Eric about a year ago but they didn’t get off to a good start back then. Anyway, since she is the maid of honor and he is the best man, they agreed to start over.

Eric is a Scarlet Springs fire chief who has a reputation as a playboy. He has never been in a real relationship, not because he has commitment phobia, or not because he is afraid of responsibility, but because he cares too much. There is no room for his love relationship considering his erratic work schedule, and therefore, it is impossible for him to settle down with any women.

But obviously, there is a chemistry attraction between them from the very start. The more time they spend together, the better they get to know each other. Both of them have never felt a strong and passionate connection like this to anyone before. However, there is one big problem. Eric’s whole life is here in Scarlet Springs whereas Victoria’s is there in Chicago. And the day after a wedding reception, she will get on the plane and fly back home.

So, it’s time for Vic to decide to follow her heart… but can she be certain that Eric is the one for her?

I loved both Eric and Victoria. Their chemistry was totally palpable. The romance between them developed very seamlessly, and I couldn’t stop smiling when they were together.

Victoria has a beautiful heart. She’s caring, kind, and considerate. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that she is a real city girl who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

Eric is undoubtedly a good man at heart. He loves his mother dearly. He loves his friends and cares about them. He works very hard and has devoted his time to saving others’ lives. Not only does he never hesitate to help people in trouble, but he does his job very well and can also stay calm and focused during crisis or dangerous situations. But most of all, he’s so damn hot!!

I know that I can always count on the author to come up with loveable characters, and she didn’t disappoint me. I enjoyed both main and secondary characters so much, and of course, I’m keen for some of them to have their own stories.

I loved the banter between Eric and his friends, Austin especially. It flowed naturally and above all wittily.

This book contains many moments which were filled with intense emotions as well as great hilarities. Some parts of the story left me heartbroken and made my eyes well up with tears. Some parts made my heart swell with happiness, and others had me chuckling and belly laughing at times.

While reading this, I felt like I couldn't turn the pages fast enough and yet didn't want it to end. And after finishing it, I felt incredibly fulfilled. This story simply filled my heart with so much happiness and joy.

“I kind of like this.”
“Like what?”
“Knowing that you got all shaken up over me.”
He tickled her side. “Oh, you do, do you? You like knowing that I almost went out of my mind?”
“No one has ever freaked out for me before.”
Trust her with your feelings.
If he was going to tell her, now was the time.
He stroked her cheek. “That’s because no one has ever loved you the way I do.”

All in all, this is a book that will put a smile on your face, make you laugh so hard, and leave you with tears in your eyes. For fans of this author and/or small town romances, this is a must-read book. So what are you waiting for? Pick it up and you will definitely not be disappointed!

So beautiful! LOVED IT!

2.5 Sooo disappointing!

I know, I know. Everyone loved this book.

don't throw anything at me now

So why did I hate it?
I have absolutely no idea, I just didn't feel it. Didn't like the characters and their personalities, didn't feel any chemistry and well, it was just boring (I admit, I did skim a lot).

Pamela Clare writes delightfully fun and exciting, and irresistibly hot contemporary romance that’s sure to entertain.

Vacation is not a word Victoria Woodley uses often, except when her best friend is getting married and there is a week’s worth of activities to attend to. The only down side is that as the maid of honor she’ll most likely be spending a lot of time with the best man. The smug and sexy chief of the fire department, Eric Hawke. Something she’s dreading since her recent track record with men left her somewhat skittish. Can she trust herself to take a risk on the irresistible man?
“Do you trust me Victoria? Climbing is about two things: skill and trust. Skill can be taught, but you’ve got to have trust to get anywhere. I promise I won’t let you fall.”

Eric Hawke’s busy schedule doesn’t have room for a relationship, especially not with an out of state woman whose idea of going outdoors is probably lounging in a patio. But from the moment he saw Victoria he can’t deny his attraction to her and the more time he spends time with her during his best friend’s week long pre-wedding activities, the more irresistible she becomes. Can he convince her to take a chance on them before their time is over?
"Firemen are my favorite color.”

I met Eric and Vic at the end of Barely Breathing, the first book in this series and I loved how their instant like and loathe start of their relationship made me want to get to know them. As Austin and Lexi’s (the main characters from the previous book) wedding pushes the plot forward through lots of fun in the sun activities like hiking, wakeboarding and horseback riding, it also drives Eric and Vic to get to know one another and what started as a tentative and cordial friendship turns into a deep and burning connection.
“I haven't had you inside me for thirty-six hours, and I'm dying. Isn't it your job to save people?”

One might initially think Eric is an incorrigible womanizer especially since he practically advertises it! He’s actually a loyal friend, wonderfully caring son and brave and dedicated member of his community with a big heart underneath his flirty and cocky exterior. Victoria is perfect for him with all her sass, smarts and equally caring heart albeit a bit reticent due to the deception at the hands of a scheming man. But Eric helped her build back her confidence with tenderness.
"Bumper stickers? I put them on my truck because I think they're funny, not because I'm advertising."
"I'm surprised you don't have one that just says, ‘Hey, I'm a fireman. Want to play with my hose?’”
"That's pretty good. Do you want to play with my hose?"

Unlike the previous book in this series, there’s no big drama but Pamela’s character hooked me none the less. I appreciated the wonderful scenery that was richly described and made me feel as though I was right there enjoying their expeditions with characters who’ve become friends (there were cameos from the I-Team series that made my day) as much as liked to accompany Eric on this fireman and rescue tasks and I of course loved getting to know both Victoria and Eric.
"Oh, my God!" she whispered. "I'm being carried by a fireman!"

Even though I thought Victoria and Eric’s relationship was going to be of the frenemies to lovers variety, it was mostly very fun, sweet, hot and very romantic. The entire book centered on them and their budding relationship and the end was very much hearts and flowers.

Slow Burn is book #2 in the Colorado High Country series by Pamela Clare. It’s a standalone, contemporary romance full of fun and sexiness with a happy ending.

For me there is not much that I enjoy better than reading a Pamela Clare book. Slow Burn was a phenomenal read for me, I LOVED every second. There was always something going on, keeping me fully glued to the pages. The only reason it took me so long to finish was because I was so darn busy with my home life and work. I did not want to finish the last two chapters until I could give my full attention to it.

Slow Burn took me on an adventure, whether it was white water rafting, horseback riding through the mountains or just hanging out at the pub, there was always something going on. The story line moved well keeping me completely engrossed.

As for Eric and Victoria, they definitely started out on the wrong foot but they really were destined to be together. Both of them were excellent characters and I LOVED reading about how they fell in love.

Eric was not planning on falling in love and getting married. With his job of being a fire chief, always being on call and in dangerous situations he figured no woman could put up with that. Victoria had sworn off all men and she sure did have a good reason.

Eric for me was a true hero in every sense. He put his own life in risk to save others. He was kind and caring to everyone.

What I loved about Victoria was her spunk. Even when she was very afraid to try something new, she never gave in and tried with everything she had. She was also a very kind and giving person.

When it came to it, their chemistry was completely combustible. These two were SCORCHING even when they just shared a kiss. When these two shared a bed, IIIIEEEEEEEE the heat was off the charts.

Another thing that I loved about this read was how book one, Barely Breathing and this book, Slow Burn were connected perfectly. I LOVED catching up with Lexi, Austin not to mention many of the other secondary characters I met in Barely Breathing.

In the end the epilogue could not have been any better. YEP, I had tears of joy in my eyes but at the same time I was very sad because this most wonderful book was at an end.

I now find myself wondering who the H&h will be for the next book in this series. I’m certain whoever they are that I will love them too.

5 - "Until you..." Stars!

I fell in love with Pamela Clare’s writing after I read the first book in the Colorado High Country series, and Slow Burn lived up to the high standards of its predecessor Barely Breathing, in every way.

Eric and Victoria’s story, sort of began towards the end of the first book, with them getting off on completely the wrong foot after Eric, basically puts both of his right in it, when picking up Victoria from the airport. Slow Burn apart from the prologue sets off roughly a year after their initial meeting, with Vic returning to town to take up Maid of Honor duties for her best friend Lexi’s wedding. Eric also happens to be the Best Man, so this is a couple that are expected to spend a considerable amount of time together over the week of planned wedding celebrations.

She’d come to Scarlet hoping to get away from the past year. But somehow she’d bought it all with her.

A lot has changed for Victoria over the intervening year, and taking a break from her life back in Chicago is what she needs. The chemistry between her and Eric, is an inconvenience that she initially tries to avoid, but it doesn’t take long for his caring actions, and her getting to know him better for her walls to start crumbling down.

"You’re a good man."

Loved this story, the romance was well paced, the sexy-times between Eric and Vic were hot and sometimes sweetly emotional, and the background stories for the rest of the Scarlet Townsfolk as well as the rest of the Search and Rescue volunteers that continue to play out and expand keep everything developing nicely.

"Firemen are my favorite color."

Another positive for me is the fact that there are so many secondary characters, and all of them seem to have stories that are waiting to be told, the author has scope to keep this series running for a long time to come, what with the locale, the people and the town in general, Scarlet is somewhere that I look forward visiting more and hopefully regularly in the future.

"This is the closest I’ve come to paradise."

Two books read, two five star reviews written, Pamela Clare is an author that I have no qualms about reading anything and everything by in the future.

Victoria (Vic) Woodley is back in Scarlet Springs, Colorado for her best friend's wedding. A year before, Eric Hawke met her at the airport and they really got off on the wrong foot. She's Lexie's maid of honor and he's Austin's best man so this time, they've got a week to change course. And, that new course direction was definitely a slow burn.

I was really happy that this next book featured Victoria and Eric as their first encounter was so lively and interesting they were destined to have a strong story. They are well developed characters with strong senses of self but also a great understanding of each other. There aren't any relationship gimmicks used in this story as theirs is open, honest and mature. That's not to say it was bump free but how they handled those issues was in tandem with their natures.

I loved this story, especially the intersection with characters from the I-Team series, one of my favorites. Aside from Eric and Victoria's relationship development, the beauty of the Colorado region was showcased through the week of pre-wedding activities. And, as Eric is a fire chief and search & rescue team member, we get incredible insights about those roles and the impact on family and relationships.

Pamela Clare is an auto-buy author for me and this story inspired me to keep her on that list. I liked everything about this book.

PRE READ

Marathon reading this lovely woman's Colorado series.
3 books. Ms Clare and I will be inseparable.

POST READ

“Bumper stickers? I put them on my truck because I think they’re funny, not because I’m advertising.”
“I’m surprised you don’t have one that just says, ‘Hey, I’m a fireman. Want to play with my hose?’”
He laughed. “That’s pretty good. Do you want to play with my hose?”

And just like that, I popped and was unable to stop until I finished the book.

This book showcased Eric Matthew Hawke and Victoria Christine Woodley and how they claimed their HEA.

Background

These two met the year before.
Making good on her promise, Vic flown over to Colorado to pick up Lexy (who had gone back to her roots to help out her dad) to bring her back to Chicago. But an accident happened and Lexy and Austin enlisted Eric's help to pick up Vic whom he taught he was picking up a dude at the airport.

Both were attracted and flirted the very first time they laid eyes on each other but because of misconceptions, they got off on the wrong foot and things didn't go well for both of them.

Characters

Eric Hawke - the fire chief in Scarlet Springs, a paramedic and a mountain climber too.
He's known for his playboy reputation but this thirty three year old hotness isn't commitment phobic. He's still single because of his work responsibilities - always on call and on duty.

Victoria "Vic" Woodley - born with a silver spoon in her mouth but never used her status to get to where she was. She works for Jensen West Communications, the biggest public-relations firm in Chicago.

Plot

Austin and Lexy (from Barely Breathing )were getting married and as expected, Vic is the maid of honour whilst Eric is the best man. As I've mentioned earlier, they didn't get off to a good start but decided to start over for their best friends sake.

And since both attracted to each other from day one, it wasn't hard for this mutual feeling to grow stronger as they spend time together with the pre-nuptial activities Lexi had planned for her bridal party.
However, so many things are stopping them to act on their feelings.
: Eric's erratic work schedules whilst Vic's tragic experience with her ex.
: Our country playboy who lives all his life in Scarlet Springs and our easy going city girl who has successful career back in Chicago, will fly back after the wedding.
: Being close friends to the soon-to-be -married couple acts as a constant reminder that they're both off limits to each other.

Would these two overcome these obstacles to claim their HEA?

This instalment is tremendously good.
I love Eric. I adore Vic. Both have hearts of gold.
Their transition was such a delight to read. Eric's approach to Vic was so gentle that I have my toes permanently curled, all gnarly and looking like arthritic now.
He knew that someone took advantage of her that left her scared and scarred.

There are cameo appearances from Gabe, Nate and Jack's family in this one too.

Eric really stood out to me in book one and his story didn't disappoint.
This fireman definitely has steam and whenever I read his part I go

Rating this 4 Stars.

My biggest problem with this series is that I don't want the books to end. I want to stay in Scarlet Springs, CO and just hang out with all these great characters day after day after day.

Pamela Clare has really mastered contemporary romance and actually made me enjoy it. I honestly don't like this genre all that much, but she's managed to breathe life into it. I think it's the central focus on rescuers in the mountains of Colorado that makes it move -- there's action seasoning the narrative throughout. And great action it is.

What I really appreciate is how Clare avoids cliches that make each of the characters less than they should be. Eric and Victoria met in Barely Breathing and they had a rough intro to each other. It would have been easy to carry that over and have them be in a dragged out snit to create conflict. But Clare doesn't "create" conflict between her romantic leads. If it arises organically, it happens. If it doesn't then it doesn't. So refreshing. The contrivances are few and far between and even when you find one you can see it's actually happened as a realistic result of things that have come before. So definite kudos there.

There are a lot of characters in this series. A lot of names. Somehow they've been introduced well enough that I don't have too much trouble sorting them out. I can't wait to see who the next book is going to be about and I know I won't be disappointed because I want to read all their stories.

There's a lot of detail on climbing, rafting, fire fighting, whathaveyou, but I didn't feel it was intrusive or mind numbing. It helped me to enjoy each of those scenes more than I would have if things had been vague. Clare manages to give the reader a primer on outdoor sports without doing an info-dump. It's all worked into the story naturally.

I rave about this author all the time. I'm always impressed with her research, but I'm mostly impressed that she builds great chemistry between her lead characters and makes them believably equal status. They tend to be people I can admire and I root for them to be together

This is an independently published book, so the price is reasonable. Some who are big fans of Clare's romantic suspense might find the contemporary romance genre a difficult transition, but she does such a good job with it I didn't have a problem. And, again, I generally seriously dislike contemporary romance as a genre. YMMV, but this series is definitely worth a try in any case.

ETA: for those who are familiar with the I-Team series, I would also like to point out that Gabe -- who is mine -- makes another cameo. There is another cameo but I won't spoil it. :D

A year ago Victoria Woodley and Eric Hawke had a good first meeting which ended in disaster quickly. Since then Victoria has survived a nightmare, and sworn off men. But when she lands at the airport on her way to Scarlet Springs for her best friend’s wedding, Eric is the one to once again collect her. And he’s just as sexy and arrogant as before. And the fact that she’s still attracted to him, can only mean he’s bad news. If it’s one thing she learned through the horrific events of the last year, is that she has disastrous taste in men. But there’s no way to ignore him when he’s the best man and she’s the maid of honor.

Eric doesn’t do relationships. He knows that in his line of work, being chief of the firehouse and assisting the search and rescue team, relationships do not last. And when he sees Victoria again, he’s just as strongly attracted to her as before. But he knows it would never work, she’s from the big city and he’s a small town guy.

Soon the sparks between them are impossible to ignore, but can Victoria trust in a guy again after being hurt so deeply, and can Eric finally have the relationships he secretly years for if she lives thousands of miles away?

Victoria was everything he hadn’t known he was missing, everything he hadn’t realized he wanted. And she was leaving.

I’ve been looking forward to Victoria and Eric’s book since the previous book. Victoria was violated in such an awful way that it was great seeing her learning to trust again, not only in Eric, but also her own judgment. I also liked how caring both of them were.

The romance was quite a slow burn, which worked perfectly for these two. And once the sexy times started, Pamela Clare turned on the heat like only she can. It was a lot of fun watching these two fall in love.

I love small town romances because they usually have the best secondary characters, and I love the ones in this series. Especially all the team members of the fire department and the search and rescue. I really hope we get Moretti’s book next. And it was awesome spending time again with characters from her other series, like Nate West and his family, and Gabe Rossiter.

Pamela Clare is one of my favorite authors. I love her romantic suspense, and I’m really enjoying this contemporary series of hers. A must read for all romance lovers!

Here are some of my thoughts:
• I like seeing Victoria trying new activities, and slowly getting over her trauma. When I found out what the big reveal was, I was shocked, grossed out, and so sad for her. I’m glad that this small town with its friendly inhabitants, her old and new friends, and Eric have helped her heal and become happy again.
• I honestly didn’t think I was going to like this book, especially after already having seen Eric and Victoria meet in the last book. They’re honestly so sweet though. It has taken me a while to warm up to them, but by midway through the book (around the rafting trip), I am sold on them. I love the mutual respect and trust between them. It’s all so comfy.
• That ending with the dad being surprisingly cool – aw. I’m relieved that he actually cares about his daughter and knows to respect Eric. Her brother still sucks though blech.
• Aw, Bear. I wasn’t sure what to think of him in the last book, but it’s great to see him more prominent in this book. He is a good guy, and I love how Victoria is kind and protective of him. In general, the town’s interaction with him has been sweet.
• The friendship between Victoria and Lexi is great, and the friendship between Eric and Austin is as well.
• I like the description and the focus on Eric’s job.
• The town’s appreciation for Victoria in this book is sweet.

I’m giving this 4 stars (or maybe 3.5).

I liked this lower stakes story from Pamela Clare, the only other ones I've read from her have been significantly more action and danger and tempting death. This story is Victoria (h) and Eric's (H) quick fall into love despite Vic coming off of a terrible betrayal by a man and Eric being known for being a bit of a playboy because he doesn't think a woman would be able to handle his many absences due to being fire chief and part of search and rescue. Eric's in a small Colorado town and Vic is in marketing in Chicago. These two meet briefly at the start of the book when Vic is coming to see her best friend, who's getting a second chance romance with Eric's best friend. They don't get off on the best foot and then a year later, Vic returns to be the maid of honor in the wedding to Eric's best man and their chemistry goes a lot more smoothly, although still with some slight bumps.

Written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both are experienced (some casual references to H's experience but nothing on page and no run-ins with past hookups; some mentions of past experiences for h as well, like that she doesn't orgasm easily, I know, and that her last relationship ended because of blackmail involving non-consensual video taping). It's mentioned that H has been celibate for an unspecified number of months and then same for h.

Vic and Eric start out with a hefty dose of lust-based attraction, but they find a lot to admire in each other. Both are good people and they have a nice, easiness to their chemistry when they relax around each other and start getting to know the other, which they have lots of time to do. Both are committed to doing a week long list of pre-wedding activities so there are plenty of opportunities for Eric to introduce city girl Vic to outdoorsy fun. They also work on an adorable surprise together for the wedding. It doesn't take long for the attraction to turn physical and there are several spicy times on page. They don't talk about what happens after the week until late into their developing relationship so that does create a touch of angst. Love happens quickly here, though it doesn't feel quite insta.

Victoria is not happy at her job and has a boss who's giving her no down time. She also lacks a support system, other than the best friend she's visiting, since her father and brother were not supportive following the issues with her ex (who's in jail). The group in Colorado warmly embraces and encourages her however. Other small members of the small also find admirable qualities to appreciate. Lots of side characters, some of whom seem to have other books in some of this author's other series. Even with the large supporting cast, it doesn't get confusing.

I loved the search and rescue, EMT, and firefighting elements. A couple emotional or scary moments do occur that got my pulse pounding. But there are way more fun scenes in this book than anything else, including learning how to rock climb and a Chicago style pizza tutorial. Of course, a reckoning comes and the couple have to figure out where they stand and what it means. There is a brief separation, physically not romantically, before everything is resolved. And then, we get a few more chapters showing transition and a small future jump ahead that solidified their HEA in an excellent way. Even though the romance happens very quickly, it felt very solidly grounded and the epilogue underpins that. I would recommend this, with a note of caution that some of my playboy-disliking friends may find moments that Eric's characterization is irritating, but he's a great guy who's perfect for Victoria.

To say that I was eager to get my hands & eyes on this book is an understatement.
I loved Book 1- Barely Breathing. I wanted/needed more (almost, *wink wink*) ALL THINGS Colorado Rocky Mountains. I'm so tempted to just tell you to see my GR friend Jen's review (pic of the Oregon Duck). I agree 100% of every word in her review. I received an ARC of this book so I need to write my own review.
Yes, this can be a standalone, but there are many characters that come back in this 2nd couple's story. Beware, there are spoilers for book 1 in this book. Lexi and Austin play a big part in book 2. It's the week before their wedding. Lexi's bff Victoria (the h) flies in from Chicago. She's the maid of honor. Austin's friend (the H) Eric Hawke is the best man. I loved Eric in book 1 & I'm even more in love with him in Slow Burn. Victoria and Eric are quick to find the attraction.
Eric stood near the end of the driveway near the road, talking with Austin, a cowboy hat on his head. Seriously? A cowboy hat? Was he trying to slay her? What was next? Cuddling puppies against his shirtless chest?
Chapter 6 location

The time span seems short on paper (a week)- but the 2 couples and their other friends in Scarlet Springs go from one outdoor-sy event to the next. I hate wall climbing. I actually was interested in it in this book. The whitewater rafting was my favorite. There's a very large number of supporting characters- some quite eccentric. Victoria seemed to really take to the small town & their residents. In Chicago, she worked for a tough boss at a large and successful PR firm. "Vic" is finding it impossible to ignore her boss' texts and emails. Eric finds ways to help Vic relax + Lexi & Austin's major activities all week long really keeps them busy.

Vic took in the sights-grassy riverbanks, rocky foothills, distant mountains, sunlight sparkling on water. On the shore to their left, something moved. "A deer! Look! There's a deer!" 'Where are you from?" Logan asked. "Chicago," everyone else said in unison.
Chapter * location 1528

(I got a kick out of this-- since I remember being truly amazed the first [and only] time that I saw a firefly in rural Pennsylvania).
I just loved the scenery. I could see it in my mind's eye.
The dual 3rd person POV showed just how Vic and Eric's relationship grew. They had red hot attraction for the other, and increasing admiration. Victoria saw how devoted Eric was to his community and putting himself in harms way, many times over. Eric also saw how kind Victoria was to people. I loved how kind she was to "Bear", the town's wandering self appointed preacher.
They each didn't want to risk their heart when they knew that Victoria was going back to Chicago after the wedding. How did the other feel? They did talk, but it took a while to
face the reality.
There are so many sweet and romantic moments. There's also a couple of bad guys. Vic's ex (before she came out to Colorado). I always want the bad guys to get a more harsh punishment. Near the end, there are another couple of bad guys that seemed so realistically bad. I cried at this part.
Again, there were details that were so realistic. Eric really came through for Vic. They were dealing with a new normal. Finding out what is really important.
I loved the ending and the epilogue. Several of the male characters were referred to w/ their last name. I had to get used to Austin being referred to as Taylor, Chaska's last name is Belcourt.
I would love a book with Sasha (I loved her spunky personality) and or Chaska (Vic describes him as the most handsome man she'd ever met). Ms Clare, are you listening?
5 Rocky Mountain Stars! ARC from NetGalley. Thank you!

Slow Burn is book 2 in the Colorado High Country series. I haven’t read book 1 yet but will correct this mistake very soon! Slow Burn can definitely be read as a standalone though.
This book was fantastic! I loved the chemistry between Victoria and Eric and how they fell for each other within an action-packed week of adventures.
The story was a perfect mix of sweet and steamy with lots of action, suspense and fun!
And OMG, I want to move to Scarlet Springs. Seriously, I fell in love with the town and its people.
Can’t wait to read more of this series. Highly recommended!

4⭐

Victoria Woodley is coming to check and see if her friend is doing the right thing. To her she has only heard the bad side of Lexi and Austin's first try at romance as teens. We meet these two in book one, a funny 1st meet. Him looking for Vic Woodley, thinking she was a he.

Now the two meet again, strong attraction but no chance for more. She is a high powered ad exec who is always working for her demanding boss. He is a fireman who loves his job and finds most women dont understand his, "cant make plans" life. The romance is strong and steamy. You hope they can find away but how can a big city exec live in this small town or how can a small town fire chief live in a big city when his life is there.

These two 1st books are pure romance, not much suspense as most of authors works I have read. I still love her, her writing, her story lines and her characters.

Good story, I liked it a bit more than the first one. This series is not I-Team style RS; it's straight contemporary romance. Well written and researched as always. It's obvious the love Clare has for Colorado; some parts of the book read like a travel brochure for that part of the state. Lots of things to do there, that's for sure. I'd love to see Clare expand on the SAR aspect of the series in future books.

Lovely romance, if a slightly cheesy ending. Why is it in these books it's the woman who is usually the fish-out-of-water who changes and uproots her life for a man? Not that it didn't work out well, but it always seems to be the woman who gives and changes the most...just like real life, I guess...

This is shaping up to be a fun, lighthearted series.

The country boy turned fire chief and the city girl have nothing in common, but their connection is undeniable and made deeper when their closest friends get married. But Pamela Clare thankfully makes this more than just a bridesmaid and best man hookup, as Victoria Woodley’s and Eric Hawke’s relationship progresses quickly beyond friendship through a series of events and activities that the bridal party cooks up for the week.

A huge part of ‘Slow Burn’ reads like an extended tourist brochure and I’m constantly caught out with envy over what these fictional characters do for fun—water-rafting, wake-boarding, climbing just to begin with—as part of the run up to Lexi’s and Austin’s wedding. Secondary characters flit in and out of these and the snippets we're given of their lives made me eager for their own stories to be told. Above all, I was thrilled to see some of Clare's I-team characters make their own cameos as they reminded me just how much I've missed them.

But with Victoria and Hawke, the angst is thankfully low and their devotion to each other evident as they ride through the swells and rapids of the backcountry and their own growing passion. Even with their issues—Hawke is perceived to be a bit of a playboy and Vic understandably wary of men after her last dating disaster—Clare does make a very good case for Vic and Hawke together, bringing their differences to a manageable scale with a sugary sweet epilogue that cements their HEA.

And if this hadn't made me a hardcore fan of Colorado High Country series, I don't know what else will.

My goodness, Pamela Clare never fails to entertain me. There isn't one book of hers that I've been disappointed in reading. She is such a great story teller and her writing is spectacular. Even if she isn't writing Romantic Suspense books and just plain Contemporary Romance, she does it superbly well. Sometimes with CR authors just can't keep the reader engaged and the story going. Pamela does not suffer from this at all.

I was hooked from the first moment when Vic and Eric meet. They are such a cute couple and I love how they got together. What Vic went through was awful and I hate that it happened but I was glad she could find something happy with Eric.

My only issue with the book was

Other than that, I enjoyed this book and loved the epilogue! I can't wait to read about whoever is next in this series. Pamela Clare never fails to entertain!

The second book in the Colorado High Country series by Pamela Clare. Victoria Woodley comes to Scarlett Springs the first time to talk her friend, Lexi, into coming back to Chicago. She comes the second time to see her get married. Both times puts her into the sights of Eric Hawke.

Firefighter country boy and white collar city girl. An opposites attract contemporary romance. Pamela Clare is one of those authors that simply cannot write a bad book, in my humble opinion. I will continue to look for her work and I will continue to drool over the delish heroes. 'Nuff said.

Based on the smoking hot book cover and title, you’ve likely already guessed Slow Burn by Pamela Clare features a handsome, sexy firefighter and a smoldering romantic tale. As book 2 of this series, you also won’t be surprised this stand-alone features a main couple (Victoria and Eric) who were first introduced in book 1 then went their separate ways. Not having read the previous book, I jumped right in without too much loss of character development, as the author did a decent job of bringing me up to speed on pertinent details regarding past events without redundancy.

Ms. Clare’s writing at first was very appealing/engaging, and the story line definitely flowed, until about the halfway point. Then the uncharacteristic cheesy, crude sexual banter/commentary and too lengthy, numerous smexy moments, kicked in and, overall, the rest of the plot/writing began to lose its appeal. Usually I can’t wait for the hero and heroine to bond as a couple. Instead, that’s when the book took a decidedly turn for the worst and slowly but surely went up in flames. Seriously, folks, it felt like two separate authors wrote each half. I half expected Eric to stop wearing his firefighter uniform and start appearing in all out biker leather gear, complete with a MC patch and tattoos.

Need an example? In the first part, they both came across as professional, classy, slightly on the straight laced side individuals. Then out of the blue in the second portion, Eric would use the term f*king in his hand like it was as normal as asking for someone to please pass him the salt. At one point doing so while discussing with Victoria his previous attraction to Lexie, her best friend. Victoria also started using the “f” word nearly the same, especially while referring to their smexy time together (even in texts). Folks, it just didn’t fit their previous established character profile.

I also need to point out I wish Victoria’s very humiliating former boyfriend drama had been something else. Embarrassing, creepy, even potentially dangerous doesn’t begin to describe it, folks. Here’s to hoping that dirty, rotten scoundrel rots in the fiery pit of Hades for all eternity.

As I was intrigued by Jesse Moretti, I’m really hoping his HEA in Book 3, Falling Hard, will not stumble down the same literary road as this one. This reviewer needs consistency in character portrayal and overall delivery of the entire romantic tale.

Romance Safety Gang:

Rating: 3.5 stars

Title: Slow Burn, Series: Colorado High Country (Book 2), Author: Pamela Clare, Pages: 287, stand-alone but part of a series, good guy firefighter hero, loyal/beautiful heroine, humiliating past boyfriend drama, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, no cheating, first half was better than the second part, numerous/lengthy VERY steamy scenes with lusty language, too many rock climbing "how to" details.

Book 1 - Barely Breathing (Lexi & Austin), Pages: 272, 5/7/16
Book 2 - Slow Burn (Victoria & Eric), Pages: 287, 9/19/16
Book 3 - Falling Hard (Ellie & Jesse), Pages: 316, 2/18/17

There was nothing really wrong with this book but nothing all that great either. I'm a big fan of Ms. Clare but I'm thinking maybe straight contemporary romance isn't her thing. This was a story of two pretty nice people having a pretty nice time falling in love. It lacked conflict and there wasn't a lot of witty repartee or sexual tension to make up the lack. I read it 3 days ago and I couldn't tell you even one scene. I will say that at least this one wasn't dense with climbing details like the last one though so that's a plus.

This is just my opinion though and I don't want to disencourage anyone from trying Ms. Clare's books.

Eric quickly became my favorite in book 1, and I couldn't wait to read "his story". Slow Burn doesn't disappoint! There's just something special about sexy, heroic "bad boys" that are so dang sweet . . . and that fall so fast & hard when they meet the right woman. Eric and Vic clashed like oil and water when they first met, but agreed to "play nice" since they are best man and maid of honor for Austin & Lexi. Vic will be returning home in a week, so no problem, right? Neither expects the physical attraction radiating between them to turn into anything more. Question is: Can they keep it that way?

Slow Burn is the perfect recipe for good romance. A tantalizing blend of sexy men & women, smokin' hot sex, and relatively low-angst. The fast-paced story is intriguing and enhanced by a beautifully vivid setting and charismatic characters with electric chemistry. I found it to be a fast, enticing read that I finished in mostly one sitting. Can't wait to start book 3! A Must Read!
