I can't remember why I picked up this book some time ago at a used bookstore. I was quickly drawn in to the story, despite its violence, and Ward has a way of making even unlikeable characters sympathetic at times. It takes place in Toronto and Port Hope, so the setting was familiar. I'd like to read something else by this author and would love to know more about him. Not for the faint of heart.
Although this was a gripping novel with lots of suspense, I found the characters unlikeable. I sort of enjoyed this one but not my usual "good read".
From the back cover: "Inna Netrova's profile on a Russian matchmaking internet site is incomplete. It leaves out her history of childhood abuse in the Soviet gymnastics machine, and her years as a high-priced escort, thief and con artist. When Norbert Symes responds, compelled by Inna's extraordinary resemblance to his deceased first wife, the elderly Canadian tycoon is blind to her ingenious plan to kill him for his fortune.
For the first time Inna must search her soul and confront her conscience as she puts her plan into play. She has no idea as she does so that her life is about to be transformed in another unexpected way. Far too late, Inna learns the true, terrifying obligation of her marriage contract".
