In 1977 National Geographic Society published “Visiting Our Past: America’s Historylands.” The book profiles in pictures and text U.S. History featuring the nation’s founding, Revolution. Civil War, Western Development, Economic Mechanization, and Washington D.C. landmarks. The chapters were written by individual expert authors under the editorial leadership of Ross Bennett. The book’s historic storylines are exceptional, and the pictures are stunning. I especially like the maps of historic places and photographs of buildings and landmarks that are open to visitors. It is the ultimate travel book —fun to read, a true keepsake. (P)
