I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.

I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.

No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.

We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.

Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.

It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book one of the Cygnus Space Opera series. This takes place some hundred and fourty-odd years after Braden and Micah made peace the norm, in the Cygnus VII series.

This story starts with the characters Cain, the great, great, grandson of that doughty couple, who joins the Space School, as a cadet in training. His fellow Space Cadets, formed into a group during training, are Ellie, and Tandry, both fellow humans, with Tandry's Hillcat partner, Mixial.

Then there is Brisbois, called Briz for short, a Rabbit, & a technical genius, then Black Leaper, a Wolfoid. Peekaless, nicknamed Pickles, a Lizard Man, is one of the new cadets too, and then Lutheann, and Carnesto, Hill cats, join the group as Cain and Ellie's partners, when the two pair up together, and get married. They also have the Tortoid, Daksha, serving on the ship. He is the son of Aari, that faithful companion of Braden and Micah.

The group end up serving on the Cygnus-12, a brand new design of space ship, going on it's maiden voyage, in a search for old Earth, or any of it's colonies.

As with anything involving the family of Braden and Micah, Cain immediately gets into trouble, involving an Android and, after that, the gloves are off, as Cain, with his close circle of friends, travels through the voids of space, looking for things, and people, new!

This story lived up to my expectations, and I'm looking forwards to reading the next book in this series: Cygnus Expanding:Humanity Fights for Freedom!

I'm still a Space Opera newbie

I'm a huge Sci-fi (and Fantasy) nerd, but consider myself a relative newcomer to the Space Opera genre...thanks to Craig Martelle, I'm hooked.

I "met" Craig's writing through his work in The Kurtherian Gambit universe. He's one of my favorite "guest authors" in Michael Anderle's TKG universe, so of course I would check out his other works. His Alaska series was my introduction to the Prepper genre, and he hooked me there, too. And now I'm hooked on the Free Trader/Cygnus books.

I'm not sure this guy can write anything I don't immediately love!

There's a great lesson in morality in Craig's writing, with heavy focus on how important it is to come together in unity no matter our differences. It's a lesson we need desperately to learn, over and over again, in our current socal climate. Authors like this are mapping our future, reminding us that we live in a vast universe where our outward differences can seem to outnumber our inward similarities. We need to remember that this is an illusion...most beings want the same things - life, liberty and the ability to pursue our bliss.

That's a strong foundation on which to build. Every page of Cygnus Rising reminds us of this!

If your expecting world building, character building or any kind of coherent story, this is not the book. 140 years after a “civil war” why a war? Don’t know, not important, why genetic hybrids of wolfs, turtles, rabbits and cows but not cats? Don’t know. There just seemed like there was no rhyme or reason to much of the story. It just felt like a generic story with a bunch of science fictionish stuff thrown in. Humankind could invent a space folding engine but couldn’t kill an outbreak of space ivy? Don’t worry, some trainees figured it out with a walky-talky and an IPad. It’s almost as if this book was meant as a “Teen novel”. Not sure what I expected but this book was definitely not it.

four and a half stars of adventure and action

Descended from a couple who restored peace and established a democracy after a civil war, Cain decides on the spur of the moment, to join the Space Expedition forces of his world. He leaves without saying goodbye to his girlfriend or his family. In training he becomes part of a small team and they become strong friends. They learn to fight and support each other. One of them is a genius, then because this team want to stay together, they all end up on a space craft, testing new and important technology.
They then find more than they ever expected. There is danger in space and not everyone you meet will be friendly. This book contains action and lots of humour.

This isn't my typical Sci-Fi read. It seems the world is already established, and I kind of just jumped in. That being said, it was easy to get interested. I like the diverse characters, their unique traits and the exploration they go on. As it turns out, they find something they don't suspect, and need to work together as a team, just as they had back in training camp together, to overcome the threat. It's a great tale of friendship and love, and I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the series.

Exciting space adventure

It's an interesting premise about a post-human society who have created a genetically - altered race of human creatures with the ability to mindlink with one another. The journey of the first intergalactic spaceship was both scary and exciting as the crew was not prepared when hostilities broke out. However, working as a team and each with unique abilities, they were able to win against great odds. I enjoyed the book and liked the fascinating crew of the Cygnus.

This is a great beginning for the new series which is a spinoff from the Free Trader series (that I love!). The characters and the worlds have enough similarities with FT that I just fell right into the story. I highly recommend reading the Free Traders series first but that's only so you don't miss out on all of the action and adventure. Cygnus Rising is filled with excitement, battles and surprises. I already have book 2 and I'm going to it right now! Enjoy

An interesting series. Humans settled a colony on a world called Cygnus VII. The civilization was destroyed by war several generations ago. The survivors are determined to rebuild, return to the stars, and eliminate all war and conflict. The previous civilization before they destroyed themselves had modified many animals, giving them higher intelligence and independence of thought. The first task was to overcome the prejudice against any species other than themselves and learn to work together.

Wow

Cygnus Rising is watching Braedon's dream come true. If you haven't read The Free Trader books you can still enjoy this story as Craig Martelle weaves a compelling tale. His characters always are interesting and grow continuously throughout the series. I did recommend you read The Free Trader series as well as anything else Craig Martelle has written. I've read a bunch and loved all of them. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book

I don't know why it took me so long to get this first part, but after reading it, I just bought the rest of the series. I try new books and writers with kindle unlimited and if they are what I think of as "rereadable", I am happy to pay for permanent copies. I love the world building and character development. recommend!

Peace for All

Ever wonder what a peaceful, intelligent world would do when they travelled to space to find other worlds? Then this is the book to read. Well researched & a fun time with multiple types of characters, this book is good for all ages 13plus. A seasoned writer, Craig Martelle's talent shows in this book. I will put this on my "read again list"!

Great start for the latest Cynus Space series

Craig Martelle has done it again. Lots and lots of action and battles as well as a world of kindness between the different species that call Cynus VII home.

This book was part of a Storybundle.com set I purchased. The ‘ bundle’ introduces you to new authors within the genre. It’s worth it!

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were interesting, and introduced me to realistic intelligent animals. I will be purchasing the series.

I enjoyed this book very much. The story was enjoyable and action packed. I really liked all the different lifeforms and how they worked together. The cats on the other hand are annoying. But I guess I'm a dog person.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! The characters were real and they became my friends. The story line kept me intrigued. I had to force myself to put it down for bedtime. I will read the rest of this series and everything else that Craig Martelle has written, or writes in the future.

Continuing on with this great universe.

Lots of fun. I read the Free Trader series and was happy to find the continuation of the story some generations down. The comraderie was great even though bad guys did rear their heads. Guess I have to get the next one.

Good Start to the Series

A little uneven, the first half was good. The second half was just Ok. That is what space adventure is, it is the great unknown. I will read book 2 and see if it is enough to continue.

137ish years after the Free Trader series, we meet Cain, Braden and Micah's descendant in Space Academy. This book has quite a different feel from the Free Trader series with a lot of technical jargon.

I really enjoyed the mix of characters, the promotion of a society which discourages violence. What a wonderful fast paced plot. Well done Craig!

The book was ok but seemed more a YA book. The different races of intelligent animals was a bit childish and YA main characters were not well developed. Did not have a lot of substance for me.

Well written but I could not finish it. I just did not expect as much of the whole cadet growing up and dealing with relationships aspect being the greater focus.

137 years later

Ok it has been 137 years and the people are ready to explore space. A small group travel on a new ship to see what is out there. What they find is a world settled by earth and that they are lied to by the people in change because these people want there ship.
