A very good overall review of slave history in the US with sufficient detail to make it all too vivid and real. Quotes included from numerous slaves/former slaves as well as brief mention of many slaves' personal experiences. Lots of black-and-white illustrations/photos. Upper elementary school; middle school.

A solid overview of/introduction to the topic. Younger readers may have difficulty translating the phonetically-reproduced accent of the individuals quoted in the book, but it also gives a strong sense of how they spoke at that time.

Would have benefited from more and color illustrations.
