I've been reading the book Getting Even, and oh my God! reading this as a grown-up certainly is eye-opening. The protagonists are Lola Hennessy and Geraint Howard Williams. And how could anyone get away with writing things like that? It comes off as foolish, but objectively is very misogynistic writing. And I understand that this book was written in the 90s, likely the early 90s, but people didn't talk to each other like this routinely. Some modicum of respect has always been expected to carry on civil relationships in society. To have some man that you barely know basically manhandle you or treat you like he has something against you, and you still think that you are falling for him, makes no sense.
These books made people believe that romance was stupid genre and thus women were stupid for gravitating towards it.
I understand, again, the time line when these books were written, the same way I understand that such a short frame requires speeding up a lot to create friction and engage the reader but wow these books really had issues. Funny or still, they are enjoyable for a while sometimes and they were very enjoyable back when we were reading them in the 90s or in the '80s likely when we were too young to be reading them. You can still enjoy them today as long as you know that most of the stuff presented there wouldn't fly today the same way it didn't fly in real life back then.
