Having dedicated his life and his sword to waging war against the English, Scotsman Lochlyn Armstrong makes a devastating discovery: he is not of Scottish blood after all. Tormented by the truth, Lochlyn takes to the seas to help King Alexander III rid Scotland of Viking raiders. Seizing a Viking ship loaded with plunder, Lochlyn finds something far more valuable--a sharp-tongued Viking lass who ignites his passion. Original.
This is not really a historical romance. The author occasionally throws in scottish terms. Some are made-up, some are mis-spelled and some are out of historical context. For instance the scottish cheese she mentions pointedly 3 or 4 times which was not created until more than 200 years after this book takes place. Of course this book was published more than 10 years ago before internet research was so easy and convenient. There are alot of books these days of men who are vampires, werewolfs, demons or such who agonize because they are too dangerous for a relationship with the one they love. This hero is similarly afflicted. He can never trust himself around innocent Scottish women and children because of the evil taint in his blood. He never knows when he will be overcome with a sudden blood-lust rage and slaughter everyone. Although he was raised by the harmless benevelant SCOTTISH riever who helped murder his parents. His parentage is not so benign. He has cold, dangerous, evil ENGLISH blood in his veins. He can never have children. He could never condemn a child to be born with half-English blood. Actually except for his ridiculous phobia of his own blood and his self-centered obtuseness he is so honey sweetly honorable, self sacrificing and perfect it is almost disgusting. He is so convinced of his own hidden evil he is completely oblivious to the heroine's own demons. He believes the reason she fears and avoids intimacy with him is because she somehow unconsciously detects his tainted blood even though she gives him clues repeatedly that she was hurt in the past.
Actually since the secrets of this book are revealed by page 67 this book is really just a long book of angst by the hero. There is not alot of sex in this book, just a bit of kinky sex 3/4 of the way through the book and a snatch at the end.
