The annual backpacking trip into the White Mountains marks the start of another year at New Hampshire's elite Saxton Mils prep school. In science teacher Will Buchanan's group this year is Dee Tyler. Will and Tyler were friends long ago, and loved the same woman- Dee's mother.
Halfway up the trail, Dee disappears. Has she made good on her promise to run back to L.A.? Kidnapped? Or worse?
Overall good mystery. There were times where I wanted to scream at the main character to not do something because I knew it was just going to cause him more trouble. But overall it was a nice mystery book. I would recommend this to those who like mysteries.
I took a writing class from Tom Eslick in 1998 or so, and bought his book. I never read it but moved it 4 times. During Covid I took the time to read it. The location is so right on about the White Mountains. It’s a good mystery.
Will Buchanan is a teacher in a small NH private school and at the beginning of a class year he takes the incoming students on an overnight hike in the White Mountains as getting to know you exercise. One of the students is the daughter of a famous musician and some with whom Will had a history with having at one time played Bass in the band and lost a girl friend to the musician. On the hike Will has a new teacher Franco Delacorte as a helper, but they get off on the wrong foot from the start and there is growing tension between them. On the way back to the pickup point the musicians daughter goes missing and a large hunt ensues but no sign of the girl is found, mean while Will is having is own problems as things keep happening to him and his relationship with his girl friend and the local chief of police is going through a rough time. Lots of tramping around the White Mountains with chases as Will hunts and is being hunted by the kidnappers.
