In a feudal world of aristocrats and peasants, the Lady Isabella and her gamekeeper's daughter, Hope, are girls of sixteen. From high society through highway robbery and alongside the perils of war, Hope and Isabella share a passionate coming-of-age.
An enjoyable lesbian historical romance set in 1715 England. Lady of the manor Isabella and peasant Hope meet by chance when Hope fills in for the usual piper at the traditional Mossmen of the Moor dance. Neither has had a close female friend before, though Hope has experienced some proto-exploration with the fickle and usually boy-crazy Dolly, and they manage to become closer by arranging for Hope to become Isabella's maid.
Unfortunately, 1715 was a bad year for partisan violence; the family's allegiance to James becomes a liability when George takes power, and unrest drives the two women from the manor to Bath, to Isabella's mother's estate, and finally to an unexpected sanctuary. Credibility does suffer a bit with Isabella's sneering Snidely Whiplash of a half-brother, but overall the tale is well told and fun. I was rooting for the heroines to live happily and Sapphically ever after.
SlashReaders: In update, I've been back posting some of the thoughts and comments I wrote in my book on GoodReads. Jay Taverner was an author I discovered what I was studying abroad. It was quiet amusing on our first trip to London, I went for a walk around the hotel. The first thing that I found on one of the side streets was an LGBT Bookstore... I think I spent more time in that book store than sight seeing. :)
I found Jay Taverner's book quite fascinating to read as I was at the time taking a British Studies course at the time. It was interesting to read a book set during the time period I was studying.
This was a fun little book to read. The romance as I remember it was light and fun. If you enjoy books with a good mix of everything (including girl getting together), and a happy ending than you'll probably enjoy this one.
Rebellion is an intriguing love story telling of lust, jealousy, murder, and narrow escapes. It tells of two young women from very different walks of life in the early 1700's.
