I love this book! Mine came in a gift set including a realistic looking stuffed toy. I bought the gift set at the Dingmans Falls Visitor Center in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in the Pocono Mountains, home to many black bears. It's an adorable set and very informative, too!

I've really been loving the Smithsonian Wild Heritage book series ever since randomly stumbling upon Black Bear Cub at Half Price Books a few weeks ago. These are not your typical tales of anthropomorphic animals getting into silly situations. The illustrations are wonderful and the stories hold my daughter's interest all while teaching her (and me!) a thing or two about animals that live in the United States. I can't wait to collect all the books in the series.

Great book to read to students to explain the life of bears. It explains hibernation and how Mother Bear provides and protects her cubs.

This book can be used in different ways. One, this book can be used as an introduction to bears and hibernation. It allows for students who may have an interest in bears, to learn more about them through an enjoyable book. However, students can also make connections with the text when the they see the bear being a motherly influence on her cubs. Teaching them how to do things in order to survive. Through this, students may be able to make connections to a parent, guardian, family member or even teacher that has taken them under their wing and taught them important ways in life.

In this quiet story, a mother bear rears two cubs and teaches them how to climb, find food, and keep themselves safe. I didn't really care for many of the illustrations of the bears in this book; they often had awkward postures and expressions and I got the feeling the artist is more comfortable and accomplished at painting landscapes and plant life than bears.

I never knew mother black bears were so motherly. This story tells us how baby bears grow up under the watchful eye of their mother. It also talks about how hungry they are after hibernation and will eat almost anything. This is a very educational book with wonderful nature illustrations and a good story line.

Sweet children's book that gives a lot of detail about a mother bear and her two cubs. My boys really enjoyed this story.
