Most kids get really excited about learning to read. How many of them get equally excited about using their numbers?
If you're lucky, Goodreaders, sometimes you'll encounter an emerging reader in your neighborhood, like little Sam. He is sounding out letters or even reading entire words. And he just won't stop. He's so thrilled to have big Aha!s about reading.
But do most kids do the same thing with recognizing numbers in random situations? I didn't. Did you?
Fortunate are the children who have the numeracy Aha! Numbers are used in everyday life not just in math problems.
* Order number * Phone number * And so much more!
FIVE STARS for this playful book with the great sense of humor, down to the superb illustrations.
Preschooler loves this one. Creative use of alphabet to talk about numbers instead of just counting. I found numbers to be even more omnipresent in baby’s life than letters.
Used any Numbers Lately? By Susan Allen and Jane Lindaman Illustrated by Vicky Enright - 2008 This book is a combination alphabet and number book. It has an odd structure because the numbers do not go in order and the words associated with the letters are not highlighted in any manner. For example, on the “Y” page the text read, “number of years.” The y in years wasn’t a different color or underlined or anything. I understand that the authors are trying to get children to see the numbers all around them but I feel as though they missed the mark a little. I cannot think of occasion where I would recommend this book but I certainly wouldn’t tell children not to read it. Not Recommended.
This book was an introduction to numbers through environmental print. It was a bit unorganized though. It identifies numbers and uses the alphabet to do so, but on some of the letters the message was a bit muddled. For example for X the prompt was x=6-1 with a clown juggling 6 balls. It was a bit confusing. Good concept, and I like that it highlights the idea of recognizing numbers and letters in environmental print but not my first choice to use to explain numbers to early readers.
I am a big fan of Read Anything Good Lately and Written Anything Good Lately and knew about the authors' math version and finally landed a copy of Used Any Numbers Lately? This clever alphabet book shows where numbers are found and used as it marches through the alphabet. A good book for reminding young readers, math is all around you.
Not a huge lesson in itself but a good begining of the years book that emphasizes what Dr. Smith was saying, math and numbers are every where. This book helps to teach kids just how important math is.
