Rate this book
Samantha Grant is at a dead end in life. Fired from her job because her father happens to be the Secretary of State is just the icing on the cake. At least she has Monster-Go to fill her empty hours. Except she's not the only one playing the augmented reality phone game. Her ex, the jockiest jock of all is, too. And he just happens to be on the rival team. She'll take this competition to a whole new level in the name of winning the title as the best Monster Master in the Capital.

Oliver Falcón is in love with his boss' daughter. The problem is, she hates him with the passion of a thousand, fiery suns. He broke her heart to protect her once, and now he wants her back. Strategy has always been his gift, and this time he's got a plan to not only win Sam back, but show her just how much he belongs in her world. He's gone geek, and he's never going back. Past secrets haunt the former lovers, and as much as Oliver wants Sam back in his arms, he'll break her heart again if it means protecting her.

Samantha Grant is the daughter of the Secretary of State and a huge Monster-Go (a fiction Pokemon-Go) game player. She runs into Oliver, the man who broke her heart some 10 years ago, while trying to protect her from a blackmail scheme that would have scandalized her father. So he finally apologizes to her, they hook back up again, but scandal follows them anyway. And so does a kidnapper. And Samantha isn't really sure she's ready to risk her heart again.

This is so far my least favorite in the series. On the whole, my problem is with being entirely unable to connect to the POV of the heroines. And Samantha is a tough cookie to comprehend. For such a supposedly strong and confident woman, she lives her life in fear and it colors her relationship with Oliver. Now their reunion was lightning fast given she practically hated him for 10 years, but that's just done in romance, so it doesn't bother me so much. But the way Samantha pulled away after her kidnapping and basically kept Oliver (who was very nearly a perfect hero), waiting in the wings, hoping that Sam would finally want him again was pretty cowardly...and a pretty shitty way to treat Oliver too. And Sam's behavior lacks any good reasons - he loves her, she loves him, so why on earth is she keeping him at such a distance for so long? I also couldn't understand her incredible guilt at killing two criminals in self-defense. It seemed overboard considering. It just seemed somewhat ridiculous to me that she would consider her fake-engagement to Oliver (the engagement had nothing to do with it...their making out in a public place did) to be the primary reason behind these criminals' deaths and therefore a good excuse to end it with Oliver. Gah. I couldn't understand her.

That being said, Oliver, as I said, was pretty damn delightful. In fact, Oliver had the patience of a saint. His devotion to Sam and constant love for her made me want him for myself. I do wish he'd given Lily a piece of his mind and perhaps been a bit more forceful with Timothy, but hey, I'll take him as he is.

Loved It!

Samantha and Oliver's story was beautiful. Rife with unknowns and misunderstandings it paved the way for two hearts to come together. The family drama involved was typical, even with politics thrown in. I do so like how the author mixes in modern points to lend an air of the now as well as the fact that although I read the books out of order they still made sense to the storyline of the series. Now all I need is Piper's story to complete it!
