Four Stars

This was a tough read. I have enjoyed many book by Chris Lange and hope to continue many more. I'm not often a reader of an end of the world plot, but the author asked me to read for an honest review so I shall do my best.

The Prologue totally threw me for a loop. It started with a omen that tomorrow would not be a good day. Then we jump to three months later. This was hard for me, because I had no time line to see how people were really effected other than Kat and her narrative. I struggled with this for a bit, but persevered as we met Holly and her visions. Then we meet Conroy (good or bad) hard to tell. He brings Braken and they save the four year old Michael. Suddenly we have people who are primitive at best and a handful of those with special abilities. I'm wreaking in confusion when suddenly as the four adults work together the story line becomes a little more understandable and I'm finally sucked into the story-line as more comes to light about those with abilities and Kat's deceased father who left her the bunker for survival.

Around Chapter Ten when we are introduced to Braken, the story takes on a extremely interesting twist and turn which sucks me in and I have a hard time till the end to put the book down. Talk about Alice falling into the looking glass. When you are dealing with visions of the past, present, and future it's hard to stay still.

All in all I felt the pull of a great story line in the making, the sex scenes were HOT and the mystery of understanding the past and the future compelling. I totally look forward to book two with anticipation.

The beginning felt somewhat strange but as soon as the situation gets clearer, I got sucked into this book. And I mean, totally.

Kat has to save the world, and thank God, she isn't alone. Her friend Holly doesn't seem like the fighting kind at all but she has special powers. Visions of the past and present, now that was super exciting. There are also two men involved. One of them is the big, protective kind. The other is much more difficult to grasp. Is he good? Is he bad?

More than anything, I hated the ending and I loved it at the same time. I'll be looking forward to the sequel with extreme anticipation.

Would I recommend this book? If you're into romantic stories without plot, don't bother, you won't like this book. If you're looking for an interesting story with a solid plot and passionate characters, then you should enjoy it.

Full Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the author.

I have to admit, I was almost halfway through “Slain Passion” when I stopped reading, not sure whether I should delete it or send it into the oblivion of the Cloud. There were some conflicting facts, and too many ragged edges for me to believe that the author could ever put everything together and somehow cause it to all make sense. However, I decided to continue reading, and by the end, the book had gotten better. Much better. Here’s an overview, without any spoilers:

CHARACTERS: Kat Hanson is the heroine of this novel, and we see everything through her eyes. Holly is her end-of-the-world partner. Ms. Lange allows us plenty of glimpses into Kat’s character, and through her, we learn much about Holly. There are only two other prominent characters, Conroy and Bracken, though we are only given a shallow look into what makes these two men tick. Conroy is basically a one-dimensional character, a smart-mouthed government agent who will say anything sexually-oriented to convince Kat to have sex with him.

PLOT: As I mentioned before, much is far-fetched and ragged in the first half of the book; however, Ms. Lange puts all the pieces together in a convincing fashion and I found myself racing through the last quarter of the book to find out what was going to happen. The book is an apocalyptic/paranormal/erotic romance story, with the author dishing out a fair amount of all three elements.

WHAT WAS BOTHERSOME: It can destroy a book for me if what happens early on fails to mesh with later chapters. We are told “The former owner of the warehouse died the previous year. All the stashed good were left there to gather dust and cobwebs.” A few pages later we learn Kat “…didn’t happen to stumble on this bunker…she found the refuge here mere days before rescuing Holly…” while a bit later we find out “…her dad even installed three vending machines…” in the warehouse. A bit later: “He stocked food on a regular basis, always making sure to replace old stuff with new good. She only carried on the tradition once or twice after he died.” So first the warehouse owner is a stranger, later revealed to be Kat’s dad. Kat stocked food herself, conflicting with the statement of finding there refuge mere days before rescuing Holly.
The author tells us there are only four cameras in the warehouse; Kat later wonders if Holly is watching her and a prisoner while she is in the restroom. This was more of a chuckle, as cameras are not mounted in restrooms.
It was difficult to buy the reason Holly spent six years in a mental institution, or a statement that leads one to believe nuclear plants can be shut off and on. Both could have been fixed with more details.
All of these items usually happen when an author gets wrapped up in telling the story and gets a little sloppy with some of what might seem to be “small issues.” However, wrapping all these little things in a nice package that makes sense contribute to a tight story. It was the early discovery of all these “little” things that almost caused me to stop reading. Thankfully, they were all confined to the first part of the book.

JUST SO YOU KNOW: Although it is not a cliffhanger, it is only a razor’s edge away. Adult language is spoken throughout the book, from the PG-13 level all the way to XXX. There are also multiple explicit sex scenes. (NOTE: I never subtract stars for language or sex, just letting you know what is in the book).
However, if you are seeking an erotic romance novel, look no further. Ms. Lange misses few opportunities, and in the romantic sections, she writes with such unbridled passion that it is easy to feel yourself slipping into the book. These scenes are her five-star moments.

OVERALL: Chris Lange pulls what could have been a mediocre three-star book out of the fire and charges right off the last page of Book 1 into Book 2, pulling the reader right along with her. If you like a dose of the paranormal coupled with hot romantic scenes, this book will definitely fit the bill. Four stars.

"Then came the aftereffect of the Blast. A disease that had no name, symptoms, or cure. People didn't get sick, they changed. The infection spread, swift, invisible, and the whole process lasted about three days. From survivors, they mutated into cavemen."...

The world is in a new environment, and in the aftermath of what's known as the "Blast." Kat and Holly are just a few of the survivors, hiding in a safe place. Hiding from those now known as the "Blasted." It's a scary dark world beyond their doors.

Someone has come knocking, looking for Kat and Holly. He knows one of them possesses something that may help save those that are left. Do they believe the story Conroy is spinning? Can they find it in themselves to take this leap of trust? Will Kat risk her own life and or Holly's to save what life is left outside their protected home?

Graphic language, sex, adult situations. New relationships will emerge from the darkness into the new light, some will end. Explosive ending to send you right to the next book in the series. Gripping story line, with or without the adult content. Great read!

Thank you Chris Lange

This book was amazing. It captivated my from the very first page. Chris knows how to develop an intriguing plot, that may seem like other books before, but I found it was very unique and loved it! The pace was spot on but the book is on the longer side. It however does not feel that way since this book is difficult to put down. The author developed some interesting and well thought through twists.

Kat is an adorable character one can relate to. She is all you would want in a strong female heroine. Kat does everything she can to protect the ones she loves and get them through this "post Blast" world. She struggles making sense of things but does her best to do what is right. You can't help but cheer for her and her friends.

Truly the biggest issue, it leaves on a huge cliff hanger and I want more. Hopefully the next book comes out soon so I can find out what happens next.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

I'm not a reader of an end of the world plot but this intrigued me and I am glad I did as I really enjoyed it. It starts with a omen that tomorrow will not be a good day then you skip to three months later. Kat gives you her take on it all and how she lives, you meet Holly with her visions but then you have Conroy who you aren't sure which side he is on and he brings Braken. While they all save four year old Michael from Holly's vision. You are brought in to a world of people with special abilities, corruption, innocence and longing......... this story certainly pulls you in. I received this for my honest and unbiased review.

A seriously fantastic book. This is the second time I've read it and loved it more than I did the first time. I can't wait to check out the second in the series, as well as others by this author. Thank you for that fantastic read into a different world.

Slain Passion by Chris Lange is a fabulously original story. I was really into the world of the story and had a really difficult time pulling myself away from it. The romance scenes were hot and sexy, and I loved them. However, I honestly thought they took too much attention away from the storyline. The flirtatious banter between Conroy and Kat was enticing and very well written - even added to the story. However, the romantic scenes seemed a bit forced rather than a natural occurrence within the story line. I also would have liked to know the gender and age of the main character earlier on within the story. It was a bit confusing. I kept wondering what her age and gender was and it took me out of the story a bit. Overall, the story was amazing. I will definitely read it again.

Slain Passion is a post-apocalyptic story. Something happens that changes people in three days. The Blasted are more primitive cavemen than reasoning humans. Kat is sought by a government agency that believes she is the one who can save humanity but they have to convince her to leave her well-stocked bunker. With her is Holly, a woman who has the ability to see the past and the future. Conroy arrives, setting the ball rolling that will take Kate and Holly from their protective bubble into a world full of danger and intrigue.

There isn’t too much that I can say that won’t give away spoilers. The plot was solid, though there was some inconsistency with the details in the first half. Those inconsistencies didn’t disturb the overall plot though, so I ignored them. I loved Kate most of the time. When Conroy came around… I really didn’t like him because no means no. This should probably have a forced seduction tag. Every time Conroy was around Kate he pushed for sex and it was annoying when Kate let him get away with ignoring what she said. I really enjoyed Holly. The story wouldn’t have been the same without her.

The blurb promised pain, danger, betrayal and death as “the price to restore the world and bring back humanity.” And it certainly delivered. The second half of the book went crazy fast and was hard to put down. I don’t mind the cliffhanger. I expected as much since this is the first book of a series. I would recommend this to anyone who likes different twists on post-apocalyptic stories with a bit of paranormal twist.

Well, I had a blast (no pun intended). Reading this book is like escaping into a world with true to life characters, a real story and vivid emotions.
I feel for Holly, the charming, scared girl who wouldn't be alive, save for Kat. Despite his powerful physical description, I like Bracken a lot. Kat has to save the world but she's strong-willed. I found myself munching on the corners of my thumbs when she did what she had to do. What an experience! And Conroy? I don't even know what to say.

I deeply, truly enjoyed this original novel. I'm very happy it's actually a series so I know I'll get to see those characters again. When is the second book coming out?

I received Slain Passion as a free copy from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.

My personal preference is to give this book 2-stars, but there are enough redeeming qualities to upgrade this to a neutral rating. I'll start with the thing I liked about the story-- Slain Passion had an intriguing story line. The author did a great job of building the plot and twisting events to keep the reader intrigued, I was hit with a lot of surprises when I least expected them.

There were quite a few things I intensely disliked about the book, though-- the chapter breaks were annoyingly strange, especially during significant reveals, the author was probably writing to the reader's anticipated reaction, but the strategy fell flat and resulted in an awkward flow which spoiled the reveals (a good developmental editor would have arranged things differently to draw out the suspense). I should note, some of the surprises were completely unexpected, while others were obvious. Kat should have caught on to some of the behind-the-scenes machinations sooner, instead of trying to lift denial to a higher art form.

Conroy's behavior was smug and manipulative, and most often I didn't feel he acted like a strong, dominant man-- he acted like a border-line rapist-- how could Kat not see this? No means no; instead Conroy would press and physically invade Kat's space until she capitulated. Yes, there was an attraction between the characters, but when a girl says back off, and the guy steals kisses anyway-- he's become a predator. Worse than this, is Kat let's him gets away with it and develops a Stockholm Syndrome-like attraction to this loser. I hate reading books with such dysfunctional romance. I prefer my protagonists to be smarter, and more grounded in reality.

There were odd word choices in places which interrupted my reading. One of the most strange things was the sex talk. I found it odd and stilted, although, I admit, when I reviewed back over some passages, I couldn't really pinpoint what struck me as strange. I suppose it felt mechanical... far from sexy or erotic. I can only hope book two is better as I loved how this ended (yes, there's a cliffhanger).

Against my better judgment, I will round this up to a 4 star. In actuality I'd be happier with a 3.75 stars but this is Goodreads and you get what you get.

That being said, the story was interesting. It has the workings of a good overall story. It just hasn't quite made it here with this book. First, as I read an earlier reviewer state this, I also will agree. The chapters seriously need to be corrected. It is odd and really disjointed how a chapter comes in the middle of an important scene or revel. Where I get what the author was trying to accomplish, it sadly did not have that general effect. I'd even go as far as to say that it ruins the flow of the story and reading. Also to note here, putting an Epilog on the last chapter prior to ending the book in a cliffhanger is well- bluntly stated- dumb. Just saying. Epilogs I thought were where one ends the story and has a small glimpse of their future after all the events have taken place. Not where one opens up a new portal for the next book to continue the story. Still... Just saying.

I really hated the annoying use of Cookie for our leading lady. It became vastly irritable that she never even bothered correcting Conroy about calling her that. I would.

Next our leading strong lady, Kat, failed at being her original strong character. Too many times did she fall into lust at the most inconvenient of times. She had zero backbone and failed to be such a strong character towards the end. I feel disappointed by that fact.

As for editing, I only found one missing period at the first half of the book. Nothing else noticeable so kudos for that.

I may or may not continue with this story. My interest in their outcome has to eventually come as a need to know... And currently I need not to. But that might change latter down the line.

Usually I am captivated from beginning to end by this Author's stories. Sadly, that's just not the case with this one. The characters, their issues and plights I'm just finding really hard to care or be interested in them. Or how it will turn out. After reaching the 39% mark, I must set this one down and walk away.
