Maturin Murray Ballou was a writer and publisher in 19th-century Boston, Massachusetts. He co-founded Gleason's Pictorial, was the first editor of the Boston Daily Globe, and wrote numerous travel books and works of popular fiction.

Sometimes wrote under "Lieutenant Murray" pseudonym.

It is a great book for those who wish to see Cuba as more than "that socialist island". Shows a lot regarding the life and manner of the people of the time.
I enjoyed it much more than I though I would.
