I’ve listened to divers talk about how beautiful coral reefs are and the many fascinating underwater creatures they encountered.
It’s interesting how deep water is too dark and cold for most forms of coral to survive.
I never gave it much thought whether coral was rock or animal and to learn coral is an animal and the hard outside is its shell explains why coral is easy to kill.
Once I started reading about coral I became really interested in learning more like what coral like to eat and how coral reefs protect shores from storms and provide food and medicine.
What kills coral reefs
1) Fishermen using dynamite to kill many fish at once.
2) Pollution on shore.
3) Fertilizers that seep into the ground and wash out to sea.
4) Water temperatures are too high.
5) Greenhouse gases.
6) When coral reefs bleach (turning ghostly gray or white) they are dying.
Things we can do to save coral reefs
1) Use less electricity.
2) Drive less and bicycle more.
3) Use less air-conditioning.
4) Plant a tree (trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and the roots hold on to soil to stop too much sediment from getting into the ocean).
I absolutely enjoyed Coral Reefs in Danger!

Summary: Did you know that coral is actually a living creature? That the world's most famous coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, is so big that astronauts can see it from outer space? Kids will love learning fun facts about coral reefs, the beautiful fish who make it their home, and why these amazing habitats are in danger.
Evaluation: I thought that this was a very informational book, but at the same time it was an easy read and broke things down very well. There were great illustrations to go along with what the book was talking about. The book also included graphs and diagrams pointing out different parts of the reefs.
Teaching Idea: This would be a great book to read if the class is learning about underwater animals and creatures. It would also be a good thing to tie into a lesson about evolution and the change over time since the coral reef is starting to die. I am not sure if I would teach with this book, but it would be good to have in my class as a reference for a science lesson and in case one of my students really had an interest in the coral reef.

Coral Reefs in Danger is a great educational book that teaches children about a coral reef and what people can do to save coral reefs. I believe children will enjoy reading this book because it mentions a variety of sea creatures, nature, and has colorful illustrations.
