Bernard Waber was the youngest in a creative family. At age 8, he ushered in a movie theater after school, so he often saw only the last ten minutes of a movie. He made a game of inventing beginnings and middles. When he returned from a tour of duty in World War II, he entered the Philadelphia College of Art. With a diploma and a new wife, he traveled to New York City, where he began working for the Condé Nast magazines as an illustrator. Reading books to his three children inspired him to apply his pen and ink and watercolor style to his own picture books. His first book, Lorenzo, was built in 1961. Today, his characters are some of the most beloved in the library. He and his wife, Ethel, live on Long Island.
**Like my reviews? I also have hundreds of detailed reports that I offer too. These reports give a complete break-down of everything in the book, so you'll know just how clean it is or isn't. I also have Clean Guides (downloadable PDFs) which enable you to clean up your book before reading it!
One of my favorite books from when I was a little kid, mainly because the main character shared my name and NO ONE shared my name so obviously that was very very exciting for me. Great lesson about jealousy and how it's so much more important to stand by your friends than to let fights about petty stuff break you apart. Also the fake crying attempts leading to Evie panicking about her real-life friends, family, pets, etc. is so real for me haha
This is a great story for theatre and also to teach the concept that not everyone is talented at the same things. When best friends Evie & Margie both want the role of Cinderella in the school play, Margie teaches Evie how to cry on cue. But Evie can't do it and Margie gets the starring role with Evie as an understudy. Evie goes through feelings of jealousy, disappointment, and remorse and eventually makes up with her friend.
Not the best written book, but the lessons are good. Real feelings that can happen, and while both got to play her, it was done differently than I've been seeing in more recent books. The girls had to learn about real disappointment, and not always getting your way, and doing your best with what you have/are given. Too long for a storytime, but worth keeping in mind for disappointed or jealous kids.
A great book about jealousy among two little girls who are best friends. My 4 year old likely didn't really get the jealousy lesson from the story, but she could relate to the idea of having a close friend.
I will be searching out more books by this author.
This is a short story about two friends. This book will teach children that everyone is not talented at the same thing even if you are best friends. This book is great to use in Language Arts and will help children see a problem and the solution.
