Guarding Mr. Fine

Rate this book
In this steamy novel of seduction and international intrigue, two brave men are stripped of their defenses—and exposed to dangers and desires that simmer below the surface.

As an agent with the CIA’s special activities division, Seth Lang lives for risk—and yet he’s stuck playing bodyguard to the U.S. consul general in Munich. Although Seth’s last assignment nearly killed him, babysitting some desk jockey in a suit sounds way too easy. But when he lays eyes on the new top man, tactical expert Rick Fine, Seth’s thrilled to see just how hard this job is going to get. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Quiet has a body worth guarding—and he requires hands-on attention day and night.

Dispatched to a German consulate to expose the murder of his predecessor, Rick finds himself in an extremely vulnerable position. He needs a man like Seth—in so many ways. This mission will inevitably plunge them both into jeopardy, but each new threat only brings them closer. Rick just hopes that he can keep his deepest, darkest secret hidden—or else risk imperiling a relationship they’re both fighting for their lives to protect.

This book is another crazy sexy, thrilling addition to the Tough Love series. Seth was an integral secondary characters in the first two books, and I fell hard for his biting wit and brilliant mind (no, seriously, intelligence is so fucking sexy).

As predicted, Guarding Mr. Fine is stupidly hot. Seth and Rick go at it hard and fast, first as strangers, later as friends.

Seth, who's allergic to relationships and commitment, cannot stay away from Rick. There's just something about the man—with his geeky glasses, confidence, rockhard bod, and scratchy beard—that turns Seth into an uninhibited sex god.

Rick is posing as a consulate general in Munich; he suspects his predecessor didn't commit suicide but was offed. Seth is sent in to protect Rick and help in the investigation, which is wrapped up in some shady shipments and illegal weapons.

I loved the banter between Seth and Rick. Every argument ends in explosive sex, especially when Seth gets jealous (which he totally does when faced with Rick's former lover).

They lay there, with Rick on top of him . . . Rick trailed a line of kisses up Seth's throat before turning his head and resting it against Seth's chest again. "This position makes it harder for you to get up and run to the couch."

The jackass. "You're hysterical. I need to shower, but I'm not moving."

Thank God . . . "You do realize this means you're agreeing to cuddle."

"That's a stupid word . . . I'll agree to spoon, but if you tell anyone I said that I'll deny it."

Rick loves it when Seth owns him. He's just worried that once he reveals a past incident that haunts him (and that, unbeknownst to Seth, involves him), Seth will leave. He's not completely off the mark, either.

I did not like Seth's reaction at the end; it seemed a little out of character. Fortunately, he comes to his senses, with a little help from his boss Max, the badass Ms. Bond, and Nathan playing devil's advocate.

Unlike book 2, which continued the plot set up in book 1, Guarding Mr. Fine CAN be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the mystery, although I guessed the "bad guy" almost immediately, despite the many red herrings.

I hope this isn't the last book in the series. I already have my heart set on the next MC.

I really liked this story. It had a lot of action, suspense, mystery and of course romance. And what a super sexy couple we got!

While reading the first part I thought I'll rate it with 3 stars, but I ended up giving it 4 stars because the second part really kept my heart in knots. And not only because of the suspense, but at one point I was heartbroken for both of them. Thank God the ending melted my heart! *dreamy eyes*

Seth (I adore this name) and Rick had such great chemistry. The sexy nerd and the bodyguard! *hotness* I loved the idea of a sexy desk jockey with glasses to add to the hotness. And Seth was always hiding after a wall of sarcasm and jokes. But these two clicked and I enjoyed their story more than I expected.

Guarding Mr. Fine is #3 book in the Tough Love series. I haven't read the first two books, but I loved this one anyway and didn't feel I needed to know more to better understand this story. So I think it really can be read as a stand-alone.

I really like HelenKay Dimon's writing style. I didn't love the story from the start, but the characters made me fall for them, in time. I love the fact their stories are not revealed from the start. We get to discover their history piece by piece.

The suspense was bearable and it's a low angst story with a beautiful ending. For these two hot but proud men, I didn't quite picture such a sweet and adorable ending. But it really was. Besides the HUGE hotness, of course. Seth surprised me a lot.

Oh and I'm so curious if the author will write a story for Nathan too. He seemed pretty intrigued by Seth and Rick's relationship.

Steamy and annoying in equal parts and although the suspense and whodunnit was patently obvious, it was an entertaining and well paced read.

Seth Lang is sent to Munich to play bodyguard to the U.S. consul general. Babysitting a desk jockey isn't Seth's usual MO, but when he sets his eyes on Rick Fine...Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome and the man he had a sexy encounter with three days prior, Seth goes from annoyed to intrigued.

Rick Fine had been sent undercover to find out what really happened to the previous consul general. He is going to need all the help he can get and when it turns out his bodyguard is someone from his past things start to get interesting.

But with Rick keeping a huge secret from Seth and danger at every turn. These two will need to put their issues aside and learn to trust before it all comes crashing down around them.

I enjoyed this book immensely. This is the third book in the series but can be read as a standalone with no issues. The writing was great. The pace moved along nicely. It had some twists and turns (though to be honest it's pretty obvious who the baddie is right from the start). The back and forth banter between the heroes was great. The sexy times were hot. Both main characters were likable guys. The secondary characters were interesting (I'd LOVE to hear more about Alec and his brothers).

Overall just a really enjoyable read. Two thumbs up from yours truly.

Like the first two books in HelenKay Dimon's Tough Love series, Guarding Mr. Fine is a sexy, sexy read. Seth was a favorite character of mine in the first two books, so I was looking forward to his story.

Seth is all gruff and snark, but that's mostly just to keep people from getting too close. You know the type -- the lone wolf alpha male, the person that just can never see themselves falling in love. All the while, secretly hoping they find their other half. Yeah, that type.

Rick is more 'go with the flow' than Seth is and is also sees no problem with them mixing business and (much, much) pleasure. For him, it's a win-win. Rick is in Munich to investigate the death of his predecessor, and he's purposefully playing up inexperience in hopes that people will let down their guard.

Seth and Rick first meet in a club in Berlin, where they have a very hot and anonymous encounter. What are the odds that they would be working together in Munich just a couple days later? Well, that one bit of hotness can't be contained to that club encounter and soon, Seth and Rick are heating up the sheets, and each other, again.

Guarding Mr. Fine is my favorite of the three books. I just love Seth. Smart, sexy, and as much as it chagrins him, hopeless against one geeky Rick Fine.

I found I liked the suspense story-line more than I did in the previous two books. It was a little less over the top (not a lot, but I still liked it more). We're dealing with arms dealers this time, rather than human trafficking and it kept me guessing a little bit. Also, both Seth and Rick are damaged by their work and events growing up. They carry scars inside and out, but still they go on and do what needs to be done and pretend they can do so without those pesky emotions getting in the way (silly boys).

So, if you are in the mood for a fast-paced, super-sexy, romantic suspense story, look no further than Guarding Mr. Fine!

Recommended.

When I find myself laughing at the banter between the characters and then loving how they can take that and move into some hot as hell sex, all while working to bust a smuggling operation that involves the German Consulate...yeah, this I know is going to be a great book! This book checks off all my needs:
1. Two men who already own their sexuality;
2. Mystery yet Romance..Action yet plenty of lovin'
3. Hot as hell sex.
4. Witty Banter between the MC
5. Macho man falling in love.
6. Perfect pacing - nothing was rushed or any scenes cheated.
7. Room for more...the author could add more later.

This isn't my first book by HelenKay Dimon, but for some reason I had not read some of her newer books being published by Loveswept, the new series Tough Love - I am now going to go back and readMr. and Mr. Smith and The Talented Mr. Rivers. I am hooked!

The MC's in this story are Seth and Rick. Seth is from the SAD division of the CIA and he is the one who you call when there are bad situation. Rick, he is a man of mystery in the beginning and I refuse to give anything away. The way the back stories are revealed add to the story..from the moment they meet to the end of the story these two could not be more perfect for each ogher...it just isn't always easy and there see a few shootings, fires, double crossing traitors, and an ex or two mentioned ton make the guys work for their HEA. I mean right from the start (only read this spoiler if you dare )...

Watching these two as they deal with their growing lust and feelings while trying to figure out who is behind the shady deals occuring at the consulate, is very entertaining. In the end..watching Seth admit he loves Rick, that was both heartwarming and funny. I always love it when the grumpy man who thinks he doesn't deserve love..finds his match!

“You do it for me. The suit. That flat stomach you hide under it. Your ass . . . I mean, goddamn.”

“I love you. Forever love. Like, can’t-be-without-you love. It’s why I turned my life around.”He cupped Seth’s cheek. “I knew you were worth the risk. That you aren’t perfect but that you are perfect for me.”

If you haven't read anything by HelenKay Dimon this is the perfect starter story for all m/m fans and I really can't wait to see what she brings us next!

I highly recommend this story - 5 Stars!

Hot and troubled CIA agent Seth is sent to Germany to bodyguard an interim US General Consul in Munich. What Seth doesn't know is that the consul, Rick, is actually also an agent sent there to investigate in the suicide of the previous consul.

Playing bodyguard for some desk jockey isn't how Seth likes to spend his time, so after arriving in Germany, Seth makes use of his time off before driving down to Munich by hooking up with someone in a gay club. And you may guess who the sexy guy in suit and tie is that Seth lures into a backroom and fucks into oblivion.

description

Let's just say, showing up for the new job at the consulate is an embarrassing moment for both men...

I ABSOLUTELY love Seth and Rick. They're falling more and more in love, while trying to keep their 'thing' casual and I love how they treat each other, while not being annoyingly sweet and romantic. It's really perfect!!!

I also liked the crime plot, although the actual romance parts were what really drew me in here.
And this was written by a former divorce attorney! How awesome in that?!

5 stars and a favorite!

I have a song that keeps popping in my head whenever I think about the newest addition to the Tough Love series.
"Oh Mickey
You're so fine
You're so fine
You blow my mind
Hey Mickey!
Hey Mickey!"

Unfortunately Mr. Fine is not named Mickey but he is fine! And so is Mr. Wonderful, Seth Lang. OMG

I have a serious crush on these two guys. Not only are they completely HOT, but this story brings in so many of the arenas I love to read about; Special ops, some suspense and thrills, and seriously hot sex. Seth is a god... OMG I unabashedly fell for him. YUMMM

I love the sexy banter between the two. Dry wit and sarcastic too! Love it! The two men balance each other well and you can feel the heat coming off the pages in waves. The protective nature of Seth is endearing and you know these two are perfect for each other. That is, if they can make it through some pretty big secrets.

HelenKay Dimon is a true craftsmen of the written word and knows how to create characters and situations that are true to life, realistic, and all encompassing. Plus, she gives us a freaking hot read loaded with suspense and thrills that are captivating. This is a book you never want to end. Sigh...

Now bring on the next in the series and fast! I do not want to wait for more.
BTW. This is a complete standalone!

Predictable.

I don't want to nitpick the stuffing out of this thing. In the simplest terms, I was disappointed which is unfortunate but it is what it is and mine is but one opinion.

Mainly I didn't like Seth. I found his professionalism grossly lacking. I understand love clouding one's judgment and the need to be overprotective of a loved one, but when it's essentially instalove... that's a harder sell for me. He's that guy that walks into a room and feels compelled to prove he's swinging the biggest meat. Pretty much every conversation he engages in has the potential to turn into a throwdown and there seems to always be a thread of contention. I'm not big on anger balls. I'm not averse to some alpha dynamics but the alphahole schtick got WAY too heavy handed for me especially considering Rick outranks him.

I can go for domineering (see every Crossfire review ever) but when the one he's trying to protect at all costs is black ops CIA? Does that guy really need his "bodyguard"/"boyfriend" (of about 15 mins) to dictate every move he makes? It made Rick look like a damsel in distress and I don't even like my actual damsels to need saving when they're in distress! I'd put these two at Level of Cray-2: we get it you're in each others pocket 24/7.

A little less testosterone, please.

My second complaint, and there may be a bit of cyber foot stomping here, is under no circumstances should a reader of a suspense thriller be able to figure out who the bad guy is by 7%!

I care not that this is first and foremost a romance but the window dressing is thriller. Is it too much to ask for at least a mediocre mystery plotline? A little subtlety would've been appreciated. I want to be made to work for it and the clue dropping was about as subtle as ole Spicey.

Even though I found both the MCs to be far too trusting of someone they'd fucked once in a back room of a club, their sexual chemistry is undeniable. There are some sweet moments between them, particularly that shower scene was sappy in a way I like. I found some of the bedroom power games weird but they like to bone often so whatever. I probably would've found all the boinking hotter had I connected with either one of them but I didn't. They're both annoying to varying degrees and 2D. I did like Rick more than Seth. He's cheeky and irreverent but not nearly as cheeky and irreverent as Nathan.

I LOVED Nathan! He was the highlight of the book.

The endgame is predictable on both the romance and the whodunit fronts. Some of the thriller aspects didn't particularly add up which wasn't exactly a shocker given the aforementioned SEVEN PERCENT (implied exclamation point) but the spy lingo was good.

Guarding Mr. Fine can be read as a standalone. I've not read the two prior books and was able to keep up just fine.

I would recommend it to those in search of crazy possessive MCs. I'm looking at you, fans of The Calmes. Also, those who enjoy escapism infused with loads of testosterone fueled sex should add this to the TBR immediately.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Obviously not for me*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

This book centers around agent for the CIA’s special activities division (SAD) Seth Lang, aka ‘Tall, Dark and Lethal. Coal black hair and black eyes.’ and the new top man, tactical expert Richard ‘Rick’ Fine, aka ‘Tall, Dark, and Quiet. Short dark hair and Blue Eyes.’. Rick is the new U.S. consul general in Munich, while Seth is set to be his bodyguard. Rick, however, is not just a consul but a black ops CIA, embedded in the State Department and he is in Munich on a temporary assignment which is to expose the murder of his predecessor. Also, Rick has a secret: the two of them share a past. A past Seth doesn't know about.
“I think we’re finally on the same page.”
Seth’s hands cupped Rick’s ass. “Any chance we could do that naked?”
“Yeah, we’re going to be just fine.”

Seth uses sarcasm as a shield and a sword and Rick takes anything in strides, working things out and dealing with it. Together they are perfect for each other. For me, however, they were very boring. The story was boring, the character were meh and the side characters were eh. There was nothing special about anything in it. I struggled real hard to get into the book, the characters and the story, but I just couldn't. Guarding Mr. Fine just didn't work out for me. Sadly. Let's hope I find something else, something good, to read.
“Imagine how good that would have been if we’d eaten first.” Seth’s voice vibrated against Rick’s chest.
Rick smiled in the dark room. “I prefer this to scrambled eggs.”
“I prefer this to anything.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M)
Series: - Series (Standalone?), Book Three
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Seth Lang?
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Unsure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Nah.
Will I read this again in the future? - No.
Rating - 2.5 stars.

I am SO DISAPPOINTED. I wasn't able to connect with this story at all.

I literally forced myself to finish it. There was skimming involved.

I don't understand how the first two books in this series can be so good and the third miss the mark so widely.

Seth was not the most likeable character in the first two books, but I looked forward to getting to know him better and learning the underlying reasons he is this way. Not only did I not learn anything, I felt as though I were reading about a totally different character.

The entire book had a different feel than the first two. At the beginning there was a lot more steam and sexy times. It was great. We were missing that in the first two books. However, it wasn't long before it fell apart. We went from hot lust to relationship fears and I have no idea how or why.

The banter between Seth and Rick was good at times but confusing more often. I couldn't understand what they were talking about. It was as if there was a hidden storyline that I wasn't in on.

These two guys fell for each other. But again, I don't know why or even how. I didn't feel it and couldn't understand what it was they were feeling.

Last but not least, the action plot of the story was so lame compared to the first two books. It was obvious from the very beginning "whodunit". Plus, it wasn't exciting in the least. The resolution was almost laughable.

Helen and Max's hidden agenda was not very well hidden and was nothing short of utterly ridiculous.

I don't even know what I just read. Some sort of bumbling satirical take on an undercover CIA mission with a cheesy, unrealistic romance theme.

I've marked it up from 1 star to 2 stars because the writing is still good. It's the development of the plot that leaves a lot to be desired. My recommendation is read the first two books in this series because they are really good, but you may want to skip Seth's story in this one.

3.5 stars for this spy thriller. Rick & Seth had some pretty heavy chemistry going on but strangely I got a bit distracted. Perhaps too many secondary characters? Or perhaps many varied elements to the story. I never fully got into the zone so maybe a re read sometime to see if it just wasn't the right time for me and this book !

Full of romance, action and suspense, Guarding Mr. Fine was exactly the entertaining read I needed this week.

The story follows Rick Fine – who is nerd-sexy and hella intelligent – who begins working (undercover) as the newly appointed diplomat at the German consulate as he attempts to expose the players in an illegal weapons trade.

Not knowing who to trust, Rick is assigned a “bodyguard” in the form of series regular Seth Lang. Seth is a highly trained operation within the CIA’s special activities division. This bodyguard job seems a bit below his standard mission set, but he trusts that there must be something to it for him to be specifically assigned the task of guarding this Mr. Fine guy.

As it turns out, Mr. Fine is also the mysterious hot nerd Seth hooked up with just days prior in a Munich nightclub, throwing yet another spanner in the works and making this new working dynamic all the more complex.

Thankfully, the two men don’t deny their attraction for very long at all and agree to combine business with pleasure, acting as consummate professionals during the day while working the case, and becoming intimate lovers at night.

Lines get blurred when Rick’s suspicions prove legitimate after an attempt is made on his life, proving the seriousness of the situation to Seth and making both men realise that what they have together might be more than just a little fun in the sack.

Rick and Seth continue to battle on two fronts, working together to reveal the duplicitous person(s) within the consulate to stop them once and for all, all while facing their life changing feelings for one another.

This was possibly my favourite addition to the Tough Love series, probably because of the fact that Seth and Rick were my favourite couple to date. Pair that with the always enjoyable sexy nerd/broody bodyguard romantic trope and I was one happy reader.

I’ve enjoyed this series about covert government agents doing their spy mojo, all the while trying to not fall for a certain someone in their life. Of course, that pesky thing called lust, attraction, and dare we say love, just keeps on getting in the way, and this time around was no different.

Seth is a top agent within a specialized section of the CIA. He’s a bit disgruntled being saddled with a simple babysitting job which is way below his pay grade, but when he discovers his hot-one-night-encounter-in-a-club is his new charge, Seth just can’t believe his bad luck. He knows he should be professional, but he seriously cannot resist the sexy diplomat in glasses.

Rick is no simple pencil pusher, as he’s been tasked to investigate possible shady business deals involving illegal weapons. Though he should really concentrate on the task at hand, Rick simply refuses to say no when it comes to Seth and his advances. Why deprive himself right? As these two try to do their jobs, their not-a-relationship ups the danger and risk considerably.

Despite some rough sentence structure that was quite a contrast to the previous two books, this still held its own. What’s not to like about a grumpy, cynical, asshat slowly having his walls taken down?? Rick is no pushover, and it was great fun watching him consistently hold his own against the stalwart Seth. So yes, kick ass spies trying to save the day while denying they do have a heart, is just good ole comfort romance reading for me. Admittedly, nothing new or particularly standout in the plot, but this was entertaining and I definitely look forward to the spin off, Dirty Deeds!

Guarding Mr. Fine is the third book in HelenKay Dimon's series Tough Love. The first two books featured secret militaristic groups charged with safeguarding the world from terrorists and criminal enterprises.

In this book, Seth Lang is assigned as a bodyguard to the U.S. consul general in Munich. But before he heads to Munich, he meets a hot nerdy guy at a bar in Berlin and they have crazy head-banging sex in a closet. Of course, once he arrives in Munich and meets Rick Fine, the Consul General .... At this point, I almost DNFed the book because this seemed like such a cliched romance trope.

Seth is an uber alpha male who leads with his strong suit - sarcasm and snark - and when in doubt doubles-down on the sarcasm. (This was the second point in the book at which I was ready to DNF, but as the plot developed, Seth became less of a jerk.) Rick is a special agent who has primarily worked behind the scenes gathering intel and is now charged with this mission. He shares a secret about a past with Seth - one Seth really isn't aware of (trying not to reveal anymore of the plot).

The plot of Guarding Mr. Fine really held my interest as Rick Fine and Seth Lang investigate the death of the former consul general who supposedly committed suicide. There are numerous possible suspects and many suspicious happenings as Rick and Seth work together to solve the mystery. Very quickly, Rick and Seth resume their smokin' hot relationship which seems to work for the two because Rick actually likes Seth's snark and Seth is crazy about the hot geeky guy with glasses. And as the plot developed, I actually got to like Seth and just how much he was completely falling for Rick.

While the ending tied up most of the loose ends, there was an angst-ridden scene or two, along with a too-cutesy matchmaking situation, that seemed odd. But on the whole, I liked the plot and the MCs (eventually) and gave Guarding Mr. Fine 3.5 stars.

3.25 Stars for me, ARC review for NETGALLEY. This is my first read for this author, and I started in the middle of the series, possibly affecting my overall feelings about this book. Personally I am not a huge fan of insta-love, I felt this was a bit of. I did not see the true connection prior to the relationship. Not too angsty, but overall I just did not quite connect.

I think I'm in a book funk. I really did not like this one and I don't know why.

I realize this was the 3rd in the series but the book says it can be read as a standalone. Even though it says that, I felt like I was missing something. I didn't completely understand the connection the two had and I felt like if I had read the first two I would have grasped that better.

Anywho, I'm going to keep on reading and hopefully something pulls me out of this funk.

On to the next!

This was pretty good.

Let me get this out of the way right away. I am so glad Nathan showed his face again. He needs a book, for real.

Ok, now back to Seth and Rick. I loved them together. They fit like two pieces of a puzzle. From the minute they "met" the book just took off. No games, if you need it, I'll give it to you. Yes, I liked them a lot.

The mystery pretty much carried throughout the entire book and truly had me guessing.

The drama at the end was anticipated but how it was resolved just made me smile.

Another great addition to the series.

Now on to the spin-off!

Rosalie's review:

Seth Lang lives his life on the edge. Working for a branch of the the CIA, the SAD unit, he is used to being shot at, and taking the bad guy down. When he receives a "cush" job of watching after a sit in for the US Consul General in Munich after the "suicide" of the previous Consul General, he is a little peeved. He may have just come off active duty where he was almost killed, but he doesn't like a desk job...ever!

Rick Fine has been chose to investigate the so called suicide. His job is to play dumb, but investigate as quietly as he can, to uncover a massive illegal operation that is going on. Going in playing dumb will be a catch 22; hopefully he can act the part and no one will know the wiser. Until sexy as hell Seth enters and he realizes he is his newly assigned "bodyguard". Things are about to get interesting in Munich.

I absolutely LOVED this read. Action packed, hot alpha men, military expertise, and attraction through the roof are my favorite combinations. Both Seth and Rick come from crazy pasts, with Rick keeping secretes from Seth that could potentially unravel everything the two worked so hard for. I felt like I was constantly waiting for the shoe to fall, waiting for something else to happen to the two of them to try to take out Rick, and then LOVED waiting every time the two finally would get a chance to get RED HOT!!! This book had it all and you definitely need to put it on your TBR list!

Personal disclaimer: I did NOT read the other books in this series prior to reading this one. Not because they didn't interest me, I just didn't know about them before I saw this book up from grabs. And honestly, this read like a stand alone to me, so I don't think I missed a lot.

I'm pretty sure that this is the first MM Romance I've given a full 5 stars. Usually, the story is all about the chemistry between the two males and yada yada yada. But this? This is amazing! Don't get me wrong. There is plenty of chemistry going on between these two. In fact we're treated to an extremely hot closet scene right off the bat, but I digress. There is an actual story, suspense, and a "who done it" that pulled me in, the chemistry was just an added bonus.

After completing a top secret mission, Seth is given an unusual assignment. Bodyguard detail. Not the typical job, so he knew there was something more to the story. So before he had to check in for the new assignment, he decided he needed to blow off a little steam (if you know what I mean). Good news? Steam was blown. Interesting news? Apparently there was more steam to be had.

Rick has been assigned to a top secret mission in Munich. As far as everyone else around him knows, he's the new interim consul, since the previous one committed suicide. Well. The whole suicide thing is questionable, hence the top secret mission. But when his new bodyguard walks in the room, his top secret mission gets a lot more complicated. In more way than one. Turns out his face isn't the only thing he remembers, his name rings a bell too. A bell from his past.

There are many different aspects to this story and I'm not gonna ruin them for you. Let's just say that what should have been a one night stand, becomes way more than either of them planned. But lets not forget that this is also a mystery. Why? Because the previous consul didn't commit suicide and now someone is trying to kill Rick. Not on Seth's watch. This is where everything gets interesting.

GUARDING MR FINE is my first read by Dimon but it won't be my last. While this read sort've lost steam for me along the way, I was definitely impressed by the solid writing. Not to mention some pretty fine characters.

Characters I did, however, like a heck of a lot more in the early stages of the story than the middle portion.

We open up with the two leads locking eyes across a busy club and naturally this brings about one delicious no-names-no-holding-back hookup. Fast forward a few days and the unknown men become less unknown to each other as it turns out the man Seth thought of as Blue Eyes is actually Mr Fine, the consul general he's been hired to guard while in Munich.

There's a murder mystery, a conspiracy, and someone within the system using vaccine shipments to move illegal arms. And all the while the men struggle against their attraction and desire.. but thankfully they don't struggle too hard.

I will admit that I found myself losing interest after the pretty excellent start. I don't know if it was some of the investigative angles or if things became too complex and transitioned into convoluted, but just as that took a turn, so did my ability to deal with Seth's resistance to a relationship with Rick. Maybe it's because I'm coming into these standalones without having read the first two, maybe I'm missing something, but I would've appreciated more explanation beyond "I'm a tough guy and emotions are weird" that was never even fully articulated. Also, the fact that multiple individuals were involved in encouraging them to be a couple and matchmake kind of makes me think there's carry over from another story that maybe goes into more detail than the background that we get and is explained.

Also, I'm additionally confused by the post-fire appearance of Owen and the gun. Why did this happen? There's no explanation. Or maybe I just missed it. There were a few red herrings throughout this mystery and despite some of my confusions they were well executed. I did have my suspicions as to the culprit and was pretty chuffed to see I was right in the end.

I'd also like to mention how wonderful the dialogue about bisexuality was. We get that almost right from the opening pages and there's a secondary, and reaffirming, conversation about it later. Huge huge props to the author for not only having a bi-male in a relationship with a gay man but also exploring the issue about biphobia.

So while I did have some issues with GUARDING MR FINE I totally loved the beginning and Dimon gave us a totally sweet ending (literally) which has pretty much guaranteed that I will be backtracking through this series to read more.

3.5 "mr fine is super fine" stars

With a perfect blend of sex and suspense, HelenKay Dimon’s third novel in her Tough Love series takes us to Munich, Germany and the suspicious death of the American consul general. Tasked with investigating the supposed suicide and a mystery surrounding discrepancies in medical aid shipments, CIA agent Rick Fine is ready to play the part of an innocuous bureaucrat while looking for answers. What he doesn’t expect is that the sexy stranger with whom he had a one night stand on route to his assignment turns out to be the special ops agent assigned to be his bodyguard. Seth Lang is determined to do his job and protect Rick with his life – and if it means he has to be close to him to do it, so be it. Unable to resist the chemistry between them, they quickly become physically involved. But someone is determined to keep Rick from finding out the truth. With the clock ticking, will Rick and Seth survive long enough to admit their true feelings for each other?

Be prepared to drop all other things in favor of reading this book from start to finish in one fell swoop! Starting from their first steamy encounter, I was totally hooked on this story. When Rick arrives at the consulate and encounters Seth again, to their credit they don’t circle around each other long before admitting that they want to dive into a sexual relationship. While the sex scenes are hot, equally compelling is the emotional connection that they develop. They both have had tragedies in their families, making them prime targets for recruitment as government agents and making opening up to someone else a challenge. The fact that they can trust each other with their secrets puts them on the path to a real relationship.

As Seth and Rick are getting closer the action around them heats up. The staff who interact with Rick at the consulate all seem to have their secrets. The author skillfully keeps the readers (and Rick and Seth) on their toes with one action scene after another, and no obvious culprit. I loved how the plot unfolded at a fast pace all leading towards a dramatic conclusion. There are some interesting secondary characters, in particular, Seth’s special ops teammate Nathan and Rick’s friend and asset Alec who add some lighthearted bromance type moments to the story. If you want action, suspense and steamy sex combined with an emotional romance, I highly recommend this story.

“You were supposed to be a quick lay. Forgettable.” Seth rolled his head from side to side.
Rick grabbed Seth's chin and held him steady. “And you were supposed to be a stop on the way to a job that had me turned around.”

This is the third (perhaps final?) installment of Helenkay Dimon’s Tough Love series. I’ve read all of Dimon’s m/m books and three of her m/f books. While she often employs similar tropes and her characters often have similar quirks, they work and they work well (at least for me). Romantic suspense – especially of the “spy” persuasion – is my favorite genre, but I think that this series appeals beyond that.

Seth (who works in covert ops for the Special Activities Division of the CIA) and Rick (who is also CIA but “embedded” in the State Department and serving as an interim consul general) have a smoking hot encounter in a Munich nightclub. They go their separate ways, somewhat reluctantly (which is a surprise to them both). Or at least they think they go their separate ways. A few days later, they come face-to-face as Seth learns that guarding Rick is his next assignment. They don’t bother trying to deny their mutual attraction and have plenty of sexytimes while they attempt to uncover a weapons smuggling scheme. Of course, the sexytimes soon turn into more and they genuinely begin to fall for each other. Moreover, they share a painful past connection which is known (and kept secret) by Rick.

I’m not typically a fan of books in which the characters hook-up within the opening scene. I prefer observing the sexual tension and emotional connection build. Sometimes, though, these type of hook-ups actually enhance the tension and connection between the characters. I felt that happened here - their dynamic read as more intense, more urgent. Those familiar with the series will be pleased to see that Seth's trademark snark and sarcasm is on full display. Dimon is great at writing amusing banter and it was present throughout the book. Yet I also felt Seth’s inner turmoil – the pain, the guilt, the doubts about his self-worth. Rick was slightly more of an enigma and I would have preferred a bit more time in his head. But he was, without a doubt, a charming, decent, respectable individual. Their relationship didn’t read as deep to me as Zach and Fisher's relationship in Mr. and Mr. Smith, which is book one in the series. However, I felt that Rick gave as good as he got and that he was a good balance and match for Seth. And I ate up the reveal of their past connection. Dimon is adept as these types of reveals and subsequent angst. But ever fear – she is adept at writing the HEAs as well! I’m really looking forward to reading the spin-off series!

This was my favorite of the series, I loved Seth and Rick together.

Fast, minimally angsty, very sexy read. The suspense was good, but this was very heavily a romance book.

I wonder if we will be hearing more about the Drummond brothers??

This is the third book in the Tough Love series though it can be read as a standalone without any issues. I’ve enjoyed this series and why some of the espionage side of thing are often over simplified I think they are all enjoyable reads from the relationships aspect which is of course the most important part of the stories.
So we have met Seth previously and he is a character I liked from the off with his humour and wit so I was happy to get his story. As the title suggest he is charged with Guarding Mr Fine who just happens to be the Mr Fine he had a rather fine rather hot encounter with just days previously. Suddenly the deployment to the US consulate in Munich doesn’t seem so bad. Maybe a bit of a cliché but they have to meet somewhere right?

Rick Fine is new to his position as the U.S. Consul General where he is tasked with unearthing what happened to his predecessor at the Consulate. The placement of his new bodyguard could prove awkward but the two men are professionals and get on, though they soon have difficulty in keeping it above the sheets and so we get a seriously hot and explosive story with some good humour and wit between the two. However Mr Fine has secrets that Seth is bound to discover that will affect them on all levels, will their relationship survive the mission or is it just a result of the situation they are in?

Another enjoyable addition to the series which I hope to see more of as there are other characters that I would like to see more of still.

Some aspects of the story got my eyes rolling but, if you can get past the story oversimplifications and improbabilities, then it's ok.
The flow was not the best either and some editing was needed: like they get the condoms from the bedside table and 2 minutes later you have the characters moving into the bedroom. Wait, weren't they there already when they got the supplies? Things like that break the flow and ruin the picture I have in my head of what's going on in the story.
Both characters were nice enough and the steam was good, although it felt a little bit insta-lovey to me. The connection was there though.
An ok read, but nothing to call home about.
