Notorious Devils MC #4

Rough & Ruthless

Rate this book
Mary-Ann Lukin has never had it easy. Having survived the torments of abuse for far too long, it's a miracle that life somehow managed to leave her with a little bit of hope—hope of a future filled with happiness.

Max "MadDog" Duhart has lived more than one lifetime, earning the respect he's due as the president of the Original Charter of Notorious Devils. Nevertheless, with life still yet to live, he wants more than the regret that's tarnished his past.

Their connection is instant, though they know they shouldn't act on it—not with more than thirty years between them. Not with their families tied together by the club's brotherhood.

Yet, there's something about the sweet, broken woman that whispers of a fresh start for an old man. And while he may be rough and ruthless, she cannot deny the way she feels when she looks into his haunted blue eyes.

One phone call. One cry for help. One motorcycle ride, and life as they know it is never the same.

Needing to escape her abusive boyfriend quickly Mary-Anne Lukin calls Max "MadDog" Duhart the president of the Original Charter of Notorious Devils. Within hours of placing that call, Mary-Anne finds herself on the back of Max's bike and shortly thereafter his bed...

Max "MadDog" Duhart has lived a lot of life. At 60 years old he has pretty much seen and done it all. One look at Mary-Anne and he knows their connection is something special. But with more than 30 years separating them, and outside forces trying to pull them apart, these two will have to fight if they want a HEA.

description

The first 30% or so of this book was rough going for me. I wasn't really sure if this was going to work for me or not. The hero is a 60-year-old man. The heroine 27. Now I adore way older men to younger woman stories, but this was pushing it for me. Not to mention these two got off more than a teenager discovering their body parts can do wonderful things. That said, both these characters come off younger than their years. Especially the heroine. So I decided to just file the age difference away in the back of my mind.

Around the 30% mark, a miraculous thing started to happen. I really started to enjoy the hell out of this one. The writing drew me in. I fell in love with Max. Oh, he was bat shit crazy, and sort of an ass at times, but he was ALL in with Mary-Anne from the moment she hopped on the back of his bike. He was sexy as hell. An alpha, but also really sweet. Other than his habit of killing people that wronged Mary-Anne in excessively gruesome ways, he was pretty much perfect.

Mary-Anne frustrated me for a good portion of the book. She was very insecure and I wanted her to grow a backbone. That said, I understood why she was like that because of the abuse she suffered as a child and then with her ex, so I tried to cut her some slack. She did come into her own near the end of the book and I was cheering her on. Even if I do think she forgave Max WAY to easily. Dude needed to grovel WAY more than he did.

I also want to add that I haven't read any of the other books in this series and wasn't lost in the least. So I can firmly say that you are fine with reading this as a standalone. Characters from the previous books do make appearances. Nothing much left to say really. I'm glad I kept going because I would have been bummed had I missed out on this little gem. Two thumbs up from yours truly.

I'm sorry but I truly can't handle the explicit sex scenes between a 27 year old woman and 60 year old man. Made me barf!

Did I just read about a 30 year age gap? Was I down for it? Yes, yes I was granpapi but I must say the sex was over done.

Every time Mary even spoke (Yes main character and I share the same name) Max jumped her bones and I was just sitting here like... No one wants to fuck that much.

I did enjoy the MC element to this book but it didn’t grip me enough to read the rest of the series.

Not for me and I realise this was in the blurb, so totally on me, I somehow missed it!

5 Stars!

Hayley Faiman blasted into my world this last year and made her mark on my impressionable heart with her twisted stories. While I normal like my books a bit easier and safer, there is something about this chick that pulls me in and keeps me coming back. Whether it's her gripping storylines or the boundaries she pushes, Hayley is a mastermind with words and I always look forward to what she is gonna give me next.

Rough & Ruthless was just that.... an intense, sexy, taboo, rough and ruthless read that had me tied in knots and on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was captivated by this book, from cover to cover, racing through the pages, desperate for answers and that happy ending these two totally deserved.

Gritty. Powerful. Raw. Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Suspenseful.

MadDox and Mary-Anne are next on the chopping block in this series and dare I say the best in the Notorious Devils series. These two were magnetic, drawn to each other in an undeniable way. And that holy mother of an age gap? Delicious!

Reeling from book three, we are thrust back into the Notorious Devils MC and as always.... are in for a journey of drama, angst, twists, turns, secrets, suspense, and everything in between. The emotional roller coaster these two took me on will leave me with a wicked hangover and desperately wanting more.

If you like your books dirty, intense, steamy, and crazy angsty, then this author and series is totally for you.

I highly recommend this book.

4.5 Stars-Can you say age gap??

Wowza, Hayley Faiman took a chance on MadDog and Mary-Anne and won. With the age gap between these two, things could have gone all kinds of creepy, yet they didn't. She created the sexiest sixty year old I have ever read about. The book cover helps as well. ;)

"No woman has ever made me want to protect her, f#ck her, and fight for her like she does."

Oh MadDog, you big ol' softie. We have met the matriarch of the Notorious Devil's in past books seeing how he's Fury's father. This time around we really see what makes MadDog tick and of course what makes the ol' guy stand at attention. A. Lot. Lots of times. Lots of stamina. Whew!

"We're something, the two of us-something short of a f#cking disaster, but I'm drawn to her like to other woman I have had in my f#ucking life."

Two days. Two days after picking up Mary-Anne MadDog is a goner. She's everything he never realized he wanted or needed in all these years. Mary-Anne makes him feel complete, too bad she comes with tons of emotional baggage and oh yeah, she's Bates Luken's little sister.

"I don't think we're wrong. I think we're two lost people who have finally found what we've been looking for."

While the sex (which there was a LOT of) was instant, the rest was not. Like previous books, there is all kinds of nonsense going on around our new couple. The brothers, the Old Ladies and of course those annoying Club Whores. Not to mention there are loose ends left from the book three that are still untied here in book four. Not only does MadDog have to watch his heart, he's still also watching his back.

I enjoyed the push and pull between MadDog and Mary-Anne. He might be my new favorite biker with the gruff on the outside, yet a big teddy bear on the inside personality. My only complaint would be his dirty talking. Ick. It was too much at times and one point I wanted him to just shut up get on with things.

The book is well written from dual points of view and complements the series nicely. These books can be read as standalones, however are much more fun when read in order. All former couples are present and accounted for and once again, the next book is set up nicely. Such a great series!!

Mary Anne is in trouble. When her abusive boyfriend has sinister plans for her, Mary Anne knows she needs help getting out before it's too late. Not wanting her brother a member of the Notorious Devils to possibly go to jail to save her, Mary Anne calls his friend the much older national president Max "MadDog" Duhart. Their connection is instant but will age, family and enemies keep them apart?

Rough and Ruthless is the crown jewel in the Notorious Devils series! Hayley Faiman is a master storyteller and nobody writes gritty, raw, emotional characters better than this author.

I don't think there could be anyone more perfect for Mary Anne than Max. They have two main obstacles the age difference and her brother. Other business was not a blimp on the radar because you knew Max had everything taken care of. When you have 30 years age difference there is going to be problems with maturity and communication. But I think with the abuse Mary Anne suffered growing up and in her relationship, she needed the comfort and reliability of the protective older man. And just because Max is older and the leader of the Notorious Devils doesn't mean he is exempt from making bonehead decisions because he does.

But the heat factor was off the charts between Max and Mary Anne. There are some major benefits having an older more experienced man in your bed, and Mary Anne was reaping those benefits!

I love this series but Hayley Faiman drives me crazy with the build up to the next installment. She leaves you happy that this couple has their HEA but tosses you details knowing the next is going to be just as good if not better!

Max and Mary-Anne were great together. The story was fast paced but yet, well written and filled with enough content that you weren't left wanting more.

The only part of this story that threw me was the age difference...60 vs 27 seemed a bit skeevy to me.

When the story depends in part on the large age gap, the characters should at least act their assigned ages. Instead, the h seems like an OTT teen with her first crush and the H comes across as a young 20-something waving his dick around because he thinks that makes him a man.

I absolutely loved this book in the series, it's about Max (Mad Dog) President of the Notorious MC head chapter and Mary-Anne, who is Bates' (book 2) younger sister. When Mary finds herself in an abusive relationship, she wants out, instead of ringing her brother to come and get her (she's afraid Bates will do something stupid and end up in jail), she rings MadDog instead, to come and save her.
MadDog is Fury's (book 1) father, so he's about 60 and Mary is 27 so there is a huge age difference. But MadDog's made all his mistakes in life, knows where he went wrong with his wife many years ago and now knows exactly what he wants out of life and Mary-Anne is it!
This book saved the series for me, I adored Max, he is everything the previous book leads are not. There's no cheating in this book, which is a refreshing change for this series! Loved this story!

The couple: MadDog and Mary-Anne

Romance genre: MC; age gap
Series: Notorious Devils
Length: 328 pages

Plot: Mary-Anne is the sister of one of MadDog's club members, and she needs some help. She's leaving a bad relationship and instead of calling her brother and having him commit a crime to get her out, she calls the president of his MC, MadDog. MadDog is 60 to her 27, but the connection between the two is instant. But they are both hesitant to make it a real relationship for a number of reasons, the age difference being one of them. But Mary-Anne, despite her upbringing, is a gentle soul and needs love, support, reassurance, and above all, protection. MadDog is at a place in his life where he understands how important it is that he provide those things for her - but can he?

Commentary: I don't mind the age gap - this author does them pretty well. I felt like MadDog was a bit of a jerk sometimes, and although he wanted to be a better man than he was for his first wife, at times it seemed like that was going to be an impossible task. He was dismissive and not at all understanding sometimes of Mary-Anne's need for reassurance. I'm thinking particularly of the scene in the restaurant and then of course when she ended up leaving him. The quickest way to hurt someone who needs reassurance that they are enough for you is to tell them you don't believe them (especially when it turns out they were telling the truth after all in order to help you, huh, MadDog?). Those club girls were trying to start trouble and Mary-Anne was trying to help the MC and MadDog was so arrogant about it all.
“I know what I heard,” I whisper. Max leans down, his face mere inches from mine, and he says very quiet, soft, and yet extremely menacingly, “You aren’t part of my club, Mary. You aren’t a brother and you aren’t an Old Lady. You don’t tell me shit about my club.
And then he left her there at the restaurant! He eventually came back, but I was done with that baby-cry of a man at that point.
I was so mad at him that his first instinct was to think she was being a melodramatic liar. Part of me wishes she never forgave him - the way he dismissed her and then acted like she (and their unborn child) didn't mean that much to him? Shameful. But he's a bada$$ MC pres, and they always get away with being jerks. In the end, I don't think he really understood what it meant to be with a woman that much younger than him. He acted like she was immature, but honestly, she was as mature as she could be given her age. That's part of what age does - brings you experience and maturity. She couldn't have what she hadn't earned yet, life-wise. She needed something from him that at times he acted like he couldn't give or that she didn't deserve, and that's part of why I think they were mismatched - not necessarily the age gap itself but their inability or refusal to adapt around it.
I have to decide if the good parts about him outweigh the bad. He’s killed for me, but he’s yelled in my face. He’s shown me more tenderness than anybody I’ve ever met before, but he’s also made me feel small, too.

“I’m sorry,” he murmurs against the top of my head. “I fucked up big time.” “You did,” I agree before I look up, pressing my chin into his chest, careful not to let it rest on any of his healing injuries. “You fucked up, but I just walked away. I gave up,” I whisper.
(I hate this so much for her - she's always putting herself second and taking blame where she doesn't need to, and honestly, that's part of being abused - she takes on those bad feelings and lets others treat her that way - he's old enough that he should know better even if she doesn't yet)

But in the end, it was obviously true love:
I could fuck anybody, but there’s only one person I want to eat fried chicken in bed with, and that’s Mary-Anne.

Grammar/formatting: needed a serious pass with a proofreader - things like boarder/border, you're/your, calm/clam

We first met Max "Mad Dog" Duhart in the first Notorious Devil's novel. He was the sexy silver fox father of Fury. He has made several appearances in the series since then. His character has always intrigued me, and I know when he finally got his own story it was going to be amazing. Well, let me tell you, Hayley did not disappoint at all with his story.

Mad Dog is rough, he is ruthless and he is fiercely loyal. He will protect those he cares about without hesitation. When the much younger Mary Ann calls on him for help getting away from an abusive situation, he will do anything in his power to make sure the man she is running from will never hurt her again.

This story crosses the taboo of the a man in his sixties falling for a woman in her twenties, with the danger of an MC novel. She presented the May/December relationship og Mad Dog and Mary Ann in such a manner that you often forgot about the age difference.

I know I say it with every volume in this series, but I just have to repeat it... this series just keeps getting better. I cannot wait for the next volume to come out!

Mad Dog and MaryAnne

Mary Anne calls MadDog for help as her boyfriend has hit her and also wants to share her with other men to further his career.

They have an instant connection. Now of course we have OW drama and let's not forget that the men in this MC always run when they have a good thing. They eventually have their HEA!

Rough and Ruthless Notorious Devils MC 4
Hayley Faiman
4 stars

So I really like this series but I have to say I had a bit of enough already with this release. I am obviously not saying it was bad because I gave it 4 stars but I do think it was lengthy in the sense that the story could have been cut a littler shorter due to some redundant scenes between our two main characters Mary Anne and MadDog.

Mary Ann is the sister of Sniper. He was older than her and didn't see the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father and the mother that stood by and allowed it to happen to her. Thinking she had met the perfect man .. Kyle becomes someone else after having met her brother. The brother who was nothing but trash in his eyes belonging to an MC. The one person she knows can pull her out is MadDog -- Max Duhart. He is ruthless and a killer but he will come for her if she calls. Bates told her so.

Max "MadDog" Duhart has lived and lost. His first wife passed away and looking back he didn't give her the love or respect she deserved. He never raised a hand to her but he wasn't there. There were young and dumb -- she got pregnant and he wouldn't change anything except for maybe being a better man for his late wife. Being the President of the original charter of ND has given him a spot of respect from his brothers. His son now leads too and he is proud. So tainting a young woman like Mary Ann isn't something he should be doing. But he cant seem to keep his hands away from the one thing he should be not even considering.

The story line was good and the age difference was not an issue for me. However I did find the constant bantering of I should I shouldn't a little annoying at times. I wanted less of that and more of the true depth of what was going on. It was there you just had to get past the constant should we shouldn't we between the two characters.

I loved the fact that we see all the crew in this one and then some. I also believe this story is about to explode as the MC is still sitting back staying vigilant waiting for the Cartel to strike. They are getting their hands deeper and deeper into things that could for sure back fire.

I'm looking forward to the next release and to for sure keep up with these two. Just a hint for you though -- don't cross Max or MadDog ... holy jeezus ... just don't. There is somewhat of a graphic scene with another character in the story that might make you turn away but its quick and you wont feel sorry for him ... just queasy. LOL! --

Thank you for the ARC! Review to post to Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets.

Mary-Anne Lukin survived and fled hell, leaving her hometown and her parents' house, leaving behind a childhood and adolescence of physical and psychological abuse, the memories of which she still carries. She has built herself a life and career in California, and all goes well until her boyfriend, Kyle, begins to change his behavior. First with words, then with physical aggression. And the closest person to come to her rescue is the president of Notorius Devils MC's main charter, MadDog.

Maxfield "MadDog" Duhart lived for the motorcycle club. Widowed for almost thirty years, even when married and despite loving his wife, his priority has always been the MC. After the death of his wife, his heart closed to love and at the age of sixty, with three grandchildren he expected anything but an uncontrollable desire to protect and dominate a woman younger than his son and with beautiful blue eyes, in and out of his room. Everything about her screams forbidden, but he doesn't know if and how long he can hold back.

How do you know an author is good? When she brings you a problematic, controversial, totally taboo theme and convinces you to cheer for the couple. With an intense narrative and real conflicts, the book is anything but monotonous. It is practically impossible to drop. Some of Mary's reactions and fears may seem exaggerated, but they are totally consistent with the personality of an adult woman who had so many problems and traumas in her childhood. And these failures will further enrich her plot growth and give new meaning to the word overcoming.

Looking for a man who knows what he wants? That fight for what he wants and damn the consequences? That conquers his desires, even if society says it is wrong, and that what he wants, he shouldn't want? If your answer to these questions is yes, Max "MadDog" Duhart is your man.

A lot better than that last book.

Wasn’t as weird to read about a 60 year old and a 28 year old lol. But I can’t actually picture a hot 60 year old - Gerard Butler 10 years from now :/

I don’t know I kinda tried to forget or thought of him as a 50 year old lol

Hum, not sure what to say about this book. This is book 4 in the series, but the first that I have read, my honest opinion is that it can be read as a standalone, but for the best experience I’d say to read them all in order, that way you’ll know who’s who and what relationships are already in play.

Okay so this is Max aka Maddog and Mary-Anne’s story. Max is the president of the Notorious Devils and Mary-Anne is the sister of a ‘brother’ from another chapter, confused yet? Don’t be the author does a great job at keeping the story straight. Okay I’ll be honest, I don’t have a problem with age differences…most of the time, however in this book he was 60 and she was 27, I know the heart wants what it wants, and I eventually got on board, but I did find it all a little hard to digest, and I could see why they received the reaction they did.

So this is your typical MC type book, lots of alpha males and crude, rude language, but it fits, I mean how many bikers would you expect to be all pink and fluffy! Maddog is an alpha male personified, he is ‘rough and ruthless’ and at 60 still handsome and fit. Mary-Anne was too much of a wishy washy heroine for me. She wined and questioned everything no matter how many times she had been told or reassured of her place, and she certainly acted like a child on more than one occasion. Yes she had a tough childhood and then a less than perfect relationship, but she told everyone she was strong etc. but then didn’t show any of that strength, well except for on one occasion, but no more about that! There isn’t too much outside drama in this book, but the couple create enough of their own to keep the readers interest.

Overall this was an easy read and if you like the MC genre this book and series should make your TBR list.

I'm on the fence about this one because, honestly, there is so much I love but at the same time, so much I hate. It's a given that the H is going to piss me off, that's pretty much par for the course when it comes to MC Romance. But wow did Max piss me off, I wanted to seriously punch him in the throat. Now, let me say that Max could be a great man, very sweet and very loyal, but when he messes up he does it big time and as cheesy as it sounds he should be the poster child for "Go Big or Go Home".

Mary Ann only annoyed me when she gave in to Max the way she did. He messed up and she just forgives him. The last time she forgives him, I actually started screaming at my Kindle. My poor husband thought I'd lost my ever lovin' mind and threatened to throw my Kindle in the trash. How in the heck she forgives him so easy I have no friggin' clue. Ugh! I'm pretty sure at that point if it had been me, I'd have kicked his old a** to the curb and ran over him with his own bike.

There is a lot going on in this story. In a way, a little too much drama to really be contained in one story. We start off with Mary Ann, who's 27 and living in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. Desperately in need of help out of her situation, she calls Max, the President of the Mother Chapter of her brother's Motorcycle Club. When he sees her he instantly wants her. It doesn't matter that Max is 60 years old and has a grown son and grandchildren.

Mary Ann and Max begin a relationship or what can be considered a relationship at that moment because he demands that she be monogamous with him and only him and says he won't sleep with anyone else either. Of course, there are the club whores who would love to change that fact and begin to cause trouble.

I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to give too much away but, basically, we deal with a laundry list of dramas and conflicts in this one story. We have Kyle, Mary Ann's boyfriend who is an abusive jerk and needs to be dealt with as well as his father. We have Mary Ann's past, she grew up being abused by her Father as did her brother Sniper who is a member of the Idaho chapter of the club. There's also the problems with the Club girls who think they can manipulate the men of the club.

The main issue or central conflict for the entire story, however, seems to be the age issue. I'm not going to lie, I couldn't process it and had to lie to myself and pretend he was 50 instead of 60. Generally, May/December doesn't bother me too much (my parents were 10 years apart) but 30+ year age gap was beyond my comprehension. It seemed to bother quite a few characters in the book but I really commend the author on how well it was handled. The age difference doesn't bother the MC's and they are able to show those around them that it shouldn't matter. I think all of this was done in a realistic way, we get to see how the public perceives couples like this, how their families react to them being together and how each of them feels about what it means for their future together.

Overall, this is a good read (when I'm not imagining throat punching), well-written and addicting. It definitely evokes some pretty strong feelings towards the characters that wouldn't be possible had I not been so invested in the story. I couldn't put it down even when it irritated me. Really, my only gripe is the fact that it had way too many conflicts. I would've loved to see the Kyle thing drawn out more and had that along with the age thing be all the drama. I could have gone for less sex (my God these two have a ton of sex) and instead focused more on Mary Ann getting away from Kyle and integrating into the club.

I'd definitely recommend Rough and Ruthless.

I was pulled right into this story. This story contains heartbreak, pain, secrets, danger, and suspense.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Rough and Rowdy (Notorious Devils MC, #1)
Rough and Raw (Notorious Devils MC, #2)
Rough and Rugged (Notorious Devils MC #3)

This is Mary and Max's story. Mary has lead a hard life that included abuse and pain. But in all the pain and torment she has been able to hold on to one thing and that is hope. She has hope for a better brighter future. Max is the president of the original charter of the Notorious Devils and way older then Mary. But you can’t fight love. But with more than thirty years between them would it be wise to even act on the feelings she invokes within him? But when she needs help will he be able to resist her? Will he be able to step up and protect her from what she needs protecting from? Can they really make something they both feel with so much love and passion last?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.

I LOVE this series and I was so excited to start this one. It has a little taboo factor as MadDog is 60 years old and Mary is mid twenties. I love to read a book with a huge age difference and this one had me hooked from the get go. MadDog is not one for relationships but when he encounters Mary he is instantly attracted but finds himself feeling a little on the perverted side because of the age difference. I loved that! It made him seem real and that his feelings were genuine and not based solely on lust. Mary can't help being attracted to him. She finds him safe and feels protected around him. Coming from her background you can understand this. This was a steamy read with some hot and sexy sex scenes but it was also a story with a genuine love between both. I CAN'T wait to read Torch book next!!

I love the series ... i think Fury and his father Max are my faves ... love book #1 & #4 ... i hope there will be more books in the series very very soon. I think it is hilarious that ladies think this situation is gross ... love is love. No matter what age. if you are 60 yrs old you deserves love too. maybe 'cause i am closer to 40 yrs of age ... to me 60 is no biggie. To me it is hot! More power to them. I don't get all of that which happens in a biker club, only seen Sons of Anarchy on tv ... but it is not all true or maybe it is ... no clue. I just know it is a great entertaining read. I love Hayley's writing style. Such a great read. Here's hoping she will write more to this series very very soon. Finger crossed on that!! pretty please!!! ( ;
