In San Antonio and parts of South Texas, things occasionally do go bump in the night. While San Antonio may be the number one tourist destination in Texas, it may also be one of the most haunted cities in the entire state. Steeped in history and tradition, San Antonio has numerous buildings and locations that, many claim, are also home for some interesting and intriguing spirits.
Docia Williams and Reneta Bryne have spent years tracking down the spirits of San Antonio and other South Texas cities. The search has taken them to such places as the Alamo, the Institute of Texan Cultures, numerous hotels and restaurants, the city library, the choir loft of a Methodist church, the site of the Midget Mansion, and even the haunted Sea Captain's house. The results of this search are found in this book.
Similar to the author's later When Darkness Falls: Tales of San Antonio Ghosts and Hauntings. The first part of this book largely follows a formula, detailing the history of some significant building in detail and then throwing in some generally minor ghostly connections. The book picks up later, when it starts telling tales about hauntings at less famous locales. Still, the ultimate effect is a book that's well-researched, but disappointingly light on the scare factor. (B)
I love ghost stories, be they real of fantasy. This was a book that I read a couple stories each night before I fell asleep so it took me a while but i really enjoyed. No nightmares, just interesting tales.
I might be biased since I live in San Antonio, but this book provided the additional details and narrative of the ghost stories I've heard since moving here 20 years ago. A great year round read.
