Valerie Puri is an author of Paranormal, Fantasy, and Young Adult.

As an author of both short stories and novels, she enjoys the flexibility of writing tales of any length. Her favorite aspect of writing is the ability to create something out of nothing. She loves building worlds readers can visualize and filling those worlds with complex characters and storylines. Valerie believes that the experiences we have in life are just stories waiting to be written.

In 2016, she published her debut novel, The Crimson Tree, a thrilling paranormal tale inspired by true events. The main source of inspiration for this story was a number of experiences her sister encountered in her home. She went on to publish The Dociles, book one of The Secret Archives Trilogy, her young adult dystopian series. Valerie’s work can be found in anthologies such as Demonic Anthologies, Thrill of the Hunt, and We Know the Truth, Do You? Readers can look forward to future novels and short stories with paranormal and urban fantasy aspects in the near future, including a trilogy she is co-authoring in the Dark Projects world.

When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, or listening to audio books. She is a Florida transplant, but part of her will always call the Midwest home.

Let me start by saying I absolutely LOVED the cover for this book. I don’t normally pay too much attention to covers, but this one definitely caught my eye. It’s simple, yet goes with the book perfectly.

This was an interesting story. The main character, Carly, starts to see and hear things that no one else can. It starts to affect her relationship and question her own sanity. She firsts notices there is a problem when she looks at some pictures she took underneath a tree during a picnic with her fiancée and realizes they have no eyes. I got permission from the author to mention that in my review because I didn’t want to ruin anything for anyone. Let me tell you something about me. There are very few things that freak me out. I’m terrified of robots and aliens and I hate spiders. However, the only things that really freak me out are creepy kids, shadow people, and people with no eyes. I don’t know what it is, but you have to have eyes. I was an optometric Tech for 6 years and every one of my patients had either eyes or an artificial eye in the socket. I’ve seen some disgusting, vomit-inducing eyes, but I would take those any day over eyes that just aren’t there.

One of the great things about this book is how the author keeps you wondering what exactly is going on. She tells the story in a way that makes you think you might know, but not quite. Every time you think you’ve got it, something changes. The story itself is pretty creepy, which I enjoy. There is tons of suspense and just when you think you can’t take it anymore, she leaves you a little tidbit of what’s going on.

The story is very creative and detailed. I think there are times where it is a little bit too detailed, but it doesn’t make the story boring or anything, it just gave me more info than I really cared about sometimes. My only real complaint would be that there are other times where I wish she had given more details than she did. I would have liked a little more backstory on why the conflict was there to begin with, and what happened to the other person. It’s hard for me to say more because I don’t want to give anything away.

Overall this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a suspenseful and spooky book. This is the first book by this author, and I look forward to reading more of her books and see how she progresses.

This is the first book that I have read written by Valerie Puri -- and OMG it totally caught me by surprise!!!

When Carly Gates and her fiance James Tomlinson, go for a drive in his convertible and look for the perfect place for a picnic. A picnic to celebrate three years together -- she never knew that things in her life would be changing. Strange occurrences started happening, Carley felt like she couldn't escape them as they tormented her. All because of the Crimson Tree that they picnicked under -- and the result of what happened there years and years before. I don't write spoilers -- but, once you start reading this book, I'm sure that you will find it hard to stop reading until you read the end. Just when you think you have things figured out, beware because things can change.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

Within a few chapters into this book, I caught myself jumping at every little noise and I couldn’t look in a mirror for a couple of days without taking super deep breaths. I love the story behind the paranormal aspect to the story. I love reading and watching paranormal storylines but the ones that are explainable seem to resonate with me. I love how the author created her scenery – every scene fit perfectly with the events that were occurring throughout the entire book. Rather than let herself go crazy, Carly fought the haunting threatening to take over her life. She researched until she found more pieces to the puzzle. I won’t reveal details of the story because they are too good to ruin for you! This is a great read to make your hair stand on end!

I received an ARC for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

Everything in Carly’s life is going pretty well; she is engaged to a wonderful guy, James, and they are celebrating their three year anniversary. For their anniversary, they decide on a picnic in the country. Carly chooses a hill with a very unique tree; a tree with white bark and deep red leaves. Carly and James picnic under the tree and Carly takes some photographs. When she gets home, the trouble begins. In half of the photos, Carly has no eyes. The problem persists, cell phone photos- no eyes, engagement photos- no eyes. Then Carly begins to see spirits, have vivid dreams and waking hallucinations. Her symptoms only seem to get better when she begins to look into the events from her dreams. Carly has to work fast though, the spirits are getting upset and James isn’t so sure of their relationship anymore.

This was a haunting and quick read, perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit. This was a slow build, part physiological, part ghostly horror as Carly’s life disintegrates little by little. Carly’s character was an amazingly normal person, who wanted to continue being a normal person, she even continued to do her normal activities as best she could while the spirit was trying to communicate with her. None of Carly’s common life bothered me; however, the writing sometimes tried too hard to convey this with mentioning such things as Carly having to press ‘ok’ to get the pictures off her drive from the computer or paying $4.38 for snacks. Anyway, I was really interested in the spirits that were haunting Carly, it seemed obvious what the spirit wanted her to do, but I wanted to know more about the spirit’s life and his past. We find out a little through Carly’s research and some dreams, but I wanted to be taken back to the 1920’s for a little bit longer. I thought I had the ending all figured out, but there is a twist and a cliffhanger at the end!

Carly and her fiancee celebrate their 3rd anniversary with a picnic, the find a great spot under a lonely tree on a hill. After that weird things happen. Carly has a constant feeling someone looks at her and someone is around but she imagines it according to her fiancee or?? At a point she finds out more and more about the man without eyes and is determine to help him find peace. I adore this kind of books, been a long time ago that I read one this good. the characters are great! fell developed and everything so well described that you fell you are right there! I also love how the historic buildings are described. All in all a great read, I read it in one sit, I just wanted to know how the story went. loved every second of it, I also happen to know that the author painted the cover herself, how cool is that?? A great debut book! I received an ARC of the book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

This was a fast read. I couldn’t put it down I wanted to see how it ended.
Carly suddenly is consumed with paranormal activity around her. It’s just one small event set this all in motion.
This book made me stop to think…do our actions today have any effect on things from the past? It really makes you stop and think.
This book ended in a way that makes you want a second book. I hope there is a follow up book to this one. I have so many questions that are still unanswered. This is how you can tell it’s a great book. When you think about it long after you finish the book.
This is the debut book by Valerie. I hope she continues to write more books. I love her writing style. You get sucked into the story from page 1.
I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are 100% my own.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

The Crimson Tree is a fantastic paranormal mystery to kick off the Halloween season. Carly's life was going great, she was extremely happy and about to marry the man of her dreams. That is until that fateful day under the crimson tree. Will anyone believe the things she claims to see? Will she ever have a peaceful life again?

This was a great story! I loved how Carly's best friend believed her right from the start. This was a fast paced novel that had me on the edge of my seat. The ending threw me for a loop and had me wanting more. I am definitely a new fan of this amazing author and I'm sure you will be too!

MY REVIEW
This book at first may have started less than ideal that did not last long. The way it written and knowing it is based on true events makes it seem scarier as your reading and you can feel more for the characters.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading any future writings.

I was given an ARC copy for an honest review.
