What if you meet the right person…at absolutely the wrong time?
When Samantha Barnes starts her semester abroad in Japan, she brings along a heavy load of emotional baggage. With her ex-boyfriend in the midst of a mental health crisis back home, she’d been forced to make some difficult choices, choices that now fill her with guilt and remorse. She also made promises to him she isn’t sure she can keep, especially when she meets Thomas MacGregor, an irresistibly charming Scottish rugby player. Thomas is studying at the same university as Samantha, and, although she tries to fight it, she begins to fall for him. Hard.
Life in Kyoto is everything Samantha could imagine, but, when tragedy strikes, it sends her on a downward spiral into darkness. Will she be able to come to terms with what happened, and have a future with Thomas, or will she forever be plagued by regret?
Forgiveness is a tricky thing, especially when the person you need to forgive most is yourself.

The novel is in two parts but the second part could easily be read as a standalone novel, although it follows on seamlessly from part one. Part one ends at an important and dramatic turning point for Sam. Part two sees Sam embarking on her period of study in Japan, torn between regret for her previous actions and for what she has left behind. Despite throwing herself into her studies, she can’t help but think of the future and the possibility of sharing it with someone new – ideally someone she is as crazy about as they are about her. I really enjoyed experiencing different aspects of Japanese culture through Sam’s eyes and I found the relationship she strikes up during her visits to the temple gardens very moving.
Romance is not a genre I read very much but Saying Goodbye confounded my expectations by dealing with more serious issues whilst never being less than a very entertaining story. I think it would be perfect for romance fans looking for something slightly different.
At the end of Part #1, we were left with the shocking discovery of Dylan's downfall, and it landed him in the hospital. Sam has now arrived in Japan to start her semester abroad, but her heart still feels for Dylan, and she blames herself for his spiral downward as what would have happened if she hadn't found him when she did. In Japan, Sam has captured the attention of another guy, and if you can remember, she wanted to make her number of guys she had slept with as five and Dylan were number #4. It seems though that the new guy Scottish Thomas McGregor who is a rugby player/ linguistics major like herself wants to become number #5. Can Sam move on with Thomas when her mind is always on Dylan who is lying catatonic in a hospital bed? What will happen though when she discovers he is a great guy and starts to spend time with him and finds herself each day thinking less of Dylan. Meanwhile back home tragedy has occurred regarding Dylan? Can Sam ever forgive herself? Is being in Japan Sam's moment to finally discover her true self and in doing so finding her sourumeito (soulmate)? Is Number #5 her lucky number? Find out in Part #2 of Saying Goodbye by Abigail Drake. Overall the Book #1 Passports and Promises was a book about growing up and finding yourselves and knowing and accepting that to grow, we all have to make mistakes, and some of those will impact our lives greatly, but it is all part of the road map of our lives.
Saying Goodbye, Part Two had a much different vibe than Part One, and it made me love the story even more! While the first part was very much the college romance story, this second part was more about Sam finding herself. It had a more quiet, calming essence that was introspective and reflective. And the setting...I couldn't think of a more perfect place for this part of the story to occur in. Japan has such a rich culture that is sure to jumpstart that travel bug in any reader. There is so much to love about this story, and Ms. Drake blew me away once again with her amazing storytelling.
Sam is a very different person in this book. Her characterization alone is amazing, and some of the best I have read. Obviously, the events that occurred at the end of Part One was going to affect her in a major way, but I don't think she even knew how much it would impact her future. Sam allows herself to grieve and overcome her troubles. She is dedicated to learning and becoming a new person...a better person...the person she is truly meant to be. And she definitely achieves that, although not through the way she would have originally expected. Sam meets new friends, one in particular that becomes something more. Thomas was such a great addition to the story, and he was exactly what Sam needed. He helped her realize things about herself, which added to her ultimate transformation. However, Sam's development is purely through her own doing. And that was where the beauty of this story shone through.
As with the first book, there is a pretty big plot twist that occurs, and just as in the first part, it made the story move in an entirely new direction. My heart broke for Sam multiple times while I was reading, and I think that is why I loved these stories so much. Ms. Drake has this way of writing that makes the emotions so tangible. These characters feel as if they are your friends (or even a part of you) and you can easily relate to them. Who among us hasn't endured a loss and had it affect every aspect of their life? You feel lost and confused and maybe even a bit of guilt. But at the end of the day you overcome and build yourself back up. And while that pain might still be with you, you learn how to live your life to the fullest. There was one scene in particular involving a letter to Sam that made me tear up a bit (okay okay...I was gross sobbing and it was definitely not a pretty sight). So you definitely need some tissues for that part! I'm warning you now!
The setting was also so perfectly written. I've wanted to travel to Japan for awhile now, but this book made me want to go even more. However, what I liked is that Ms. Drake didn't just focus on the beauty of Japan and the culture that is in all the textbooks. She decided to also shine the light on the underbelly of the city. This just added to the realistic nature of the story, and something that I appreciated. I applaud Ms. Drake for not shying away from the shocking and seedy underbelly that lies in the city. It reinforces the idea of two sides to every story (a very common theme in her books).
I would highly recommend checking out the Saying Goodbye series as it is not to be missed! With amazing characters and a beautifully written story, Ms. Drake crafts a wonderful novel that is sure to stay with you long after you finish reading. I hope there are more novels in this series about the side characters because I would love to know what happens to them in the future. Definitely read this as soon as you can!
This is the first work by Abigail Drake I have read and I must say, it is full of surprises. Sam is aspiring to be a successful translator and in order to be one, she aim to study at the Applied linguistics school which offers a semester abroad - in Japan. The author introduces you to Sam's world including her friends and past relationships. It shows you that when you're in college, its ok to make mistakes as you can learn from them. Dylan was introduced to Sam and its supposed to be a fling before she fly to Japan, her feelings get in the way. But of course, education comes first. Basically book one is all about discovery and growing up.
Enter book two, Sam enjoys studying in japan, learning about the country's culture. Its one of the countries that I personally want to come back and explore. A new character, the Scottish Thomas, will be introduced, who doesn't take no for an answer. Will he replace Dylan in Sam's heart? Prepare your tissues guys as the story unravels to bring you laughs and tears.
Samantha leaves for Japan while Dylan is still in the hospital. She plans on studying Japanese and the culture in all its gritty glory. Boys are one mistake she won’t make while overseas.
Thomas is handsome, loud, and Scottish. As if that’s not a problem in itself, he’s more stubborn than an ox. Samantha’s rejection won’t stop him from getting what he wants, and he wants Samantha. She’s always wondered what a guy wears beneath the kilt. Readers, you’re going to want to read this one!

My Review for both books!!!!! What a sad and emotional book to read. Sam her character was something else. I really loved that she wasn't a perfect person, that she had plenty of flaws. In the first part book 1, Sam meets Dylan. Sam just wants to have a fling before she goes away to Japan for a semester, of course it doesn't turn out the way she planned it. And things just get so messed up. Sam finds out things about herself and Dylan, during this time that really screws her up. She also has to deal with something awful that happens to one of her friends. Book 1 gets a four star rating from me. In book 2 Sam and Dylan aren't together anymore, due to things that happened in the first book. While Dylan wasn't my favorite person, I felt really bad for him, I am not going to say what. So in this book Sam decides she isn't going to get involved with anyone else, but of course that doesn't work out the way she planned either. Due to the fact she meets Thomas, who won't take no for an answer. I really loved Thomas and I was rooting for Sam and him, from their very interesting first meet. At first it was more of a friendship, of course onces it becomes much more, something happens. Sam finds out about something back home, and she pushes Thomas away. I felt so bad for Thomas. I can understand why Sam felt the way she did, but she should have talked to Thomas about how she was feeling. I really loved how the book ended, and when you read the letter Sam gets from either Thomas or Dylan towards the end. Believe you will be in tears. This part gets 4 1/2 stars from me. So all together it gets 4 1/2 stars from me. I am so happy I was given a spot in the book tour for this sad, emotional, book. And I voluntarily requested a spot on this tour, my opinions are my own and no one else's. I would definitely recommend this book to my blog followers, friends, and family, its a book that deals with a lot of series topics. And it will hit home to a lot of its readers.
Author Bio: Abigail Drake has spent her life traveling the world, and collecting stories wherever she visited. She majored in Japanese and International Economics in college and worked in import/export and as an ESL teacher before she committed herself full time to writing. She writes in several romance genres, and her books are quirky, light, fun, and sexy. Abigail is a trekkie, a book hoarder, the master of the Nespresso machine, a red wine addict, and the mother of three boys (probably the main reason for her red wine addiction). A puppy named Capone is the most recent addition to her family, and she blogs about him as a way of maintaining what little sanity she has left. Website / Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter
First off, Thomas makes up for my dislike of Dylan and then some. He's flawed enough to be real yet perfect enough to join any list of favorite book boyfriends. Now that that's out of the way, the book's view of Japan through the eyes of an American is brilliant. From the first sentences of the book she draws us in, teaching us about the culture and customs of this unique society. Ms Drake describes the beauty of Japan with the same delicate grace you'd expect in a sumi-e painting. What makes the book stand out though isn't the cherry blossoms or gardens, it's her willingness to show us the darkness, the underbelly of the city with its sex clubs and seediness which makes her work stand out. Despite this glimpse into the less pretty side of Japanese culture, I dare anyone to read it and not have a strong desire to see the country for themselves - the grape drink alone made me jealous of Sam's trip.
I binge read this book in two hours. My boyfriend and I headed down to go horseback riding and normally when we are on a long trip he and I will chat and catch up on "us" time. But when I got the book in the mail I had to stop everything and read. And I'm so glad that I did.
There were several times that I was crying so much that my boyfriend asked me if I was OK. After a while, he just handed me a tissue and kept driving. It's not often that a book will drive me to tears, and when it does, it's a rare treasure.
Samantha learns life lessons from an unexpected person, gets forgiveness for something that she desperately needs, and finds love in unexpected places. This book is a rare treat and was better than the first, even if I didn't think it possible.
Ms. Drake - you've done it again and I can't wait to read more of your work.
~This book was read with pleasure in exchange for an honest review.
Independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock. Samantha is in Japan for her semester to help her learn the language. She has left her friends and family behind. Worrying about Dylan is keeping her for enjoying herself. She meets new friends. One friend sticks out more than the rest, Thomas, even though she wishes he wouldn't. She fights the attraction almost to the point of losing him. Things from book 1 have a way of interfering with her life at the worst time. Affecting Thomas and her relationship. Can they work out the problems, the walls, that Samantha has erected around her heart?
I gave this book 5 stars. As with the first book it has some very heavy plot twist. You will need a tissue to get through this treasure of a book. HEA. l'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
I couldn't wait to pick this up after I finished reading part 1. I would highly suggest that you read book 1 first to get the feel of the story. I thought this was better then first story. I read both stories I'm the same day. I couldn't help myself.
There were laughs, tears in this story. I got so wrapped up in this story that I started feeling the characters emotions at times. The words had me glued to my seat and wanting more.
This was a very well written story that I couldn't put down. I was definitely not disappointed. I am ready to read more stories by this author. A job well done.
Recommend for Adult, Contemporary readers. You don't want to miss this story.
I received a eARC of this book to give a honest review.
Part two continues from where Part One left off, and really went deeper in finding yourself, absolving yourself of misplaced guilt, and dealing with tragedy to live versus exist. Again our female character went a little overboard with her martyr like behavior, but pulled through to make this one as equally engaging as the first. The Author writes beautifully, highly descriptive and I love her imagery and extensive knowledge that she inserts into the story. I really felt this one spoke to me deeply and will resonate in some of the events that took place. I thank the Author again for allowing me to voluntarily review!
After having read part one of this book in a single sitting, I didn't wait long to pick up Part Two. Following the life of Samantha Barnes to Japan, with events of her past tucked as neatly as clothes into her suitcase, we meet a new cast of characters including the giant Scotsman Thomas MacGregor. Without giving anything away, I will only say this...I would love to have met this man when I was young and single. Alas... For this book and Part One, prepare to sit back and spend an entertaining afternoon in the world Abigail has created for us.
Saying Goodbye, Part 2 had a different vibe than Part 1. Part 1 was frat parties and college kids. Part 2 was quieter, a bit more reflective and drew me into Japanese culture. I wanted to turn back the clock 30 years, study Japanese and fly to Japan. Ms. Drake's knowledge of language shone through the story of Sam growing up and coming to terms with recent events in her life. Although there was sadness in the story, it reflected hope as well. And as is the case with Abigail Drake's writing, it is easily accessible to a range of readers and a book you won't want to put down.
I enjoyed the second installment and ending to Saying Goodbye. The author, who lived and studied in Japan, weaves a young love tale that matures in Part Two and includes her knowledge of Japan and even a Zen Master who is so important to the main character. Don't let that scarce you though, it is really pretty interesting and gives a little color to the story. All and all, Abigail Drake who has an easy writing style, did a nice job of pulling together a book for readers of all ages and intellects.
Just like part one, this book, I couldn't put it down! This is a brilliant follow up to the first part, detailing Sam's trip to Japan, and how she is living her life after what happened in the first book. Abigail did a wonderful job of detailing Japan and different aspects of the culture for those who have never been to.
Book two of Sams story was amazing. I can't lie I cried at this one after reading book one I was emotionally attached. This is a beautifully written story and do well described I totally understood and loved it all. This was a could not put down series I would highly recommend to others as a must read.
I realize I waited far too long to post my review for this series. Book 2 just came out on September 9, 2017. If it wasn’t for my oh so crazy life I could have read book 2 in one sitting.
Abigail Drake takes us on a whirlwind of adventure from book 1-parts 1 & 2 all the way to the end of book 2. In book 1-part 1 we meet Samantha Barnes, a young girl aspiring to become a Japanese translator. With quite the determination she does not have time for boyfriends. But as the excerpt says for part two- “What if you meet the right person…at absolutely the wrong time?” In part 2 we see Samantha actually in the country of Japan making her dreams come true. I won’t spoil it, but it is worth the read.
Book 2, a different story, takes us on a Turkish adventure with Ms. Bethany Beaumont, a character who you can’t help but just fall in love with. Such a realistic character. A realistic character with real emotions and real feelings.
My favorite part about Ms. Abigail Drake’s books is her beautifully written imagery. As I read her Delayed Departure novels I imagine myself in the country of Japan in the country of Turkey. I feel like I am there. I see the beautiful scenes right in front of me. they seem unreal, yet they seem more real than you can ever imagine.
I am OBSESSED with the Passports & Promises series. Give us more, Ms. Abigail Drake.
Saying Goodbye: Part Two is the continuation of Samantha’s story from Saying Goodbye: Part One. I recommend that you read Part One first to fully understand Samantha’s story.
“Pretending the darkness isn’t there doesn’t make it go away. It makes it stronger.” - Samantha
Saying Goodbye: Part Two was just as amazing as the first book and I fell in love with Japan from Abigail Drake’s beautiful descriptions of a country I've never had the luck of visiting. It really felt like I was there and was seeing what Samantha was experiencing. I loved learning about the culture and joining Samantha as she travelled the path of self-discovery in the most perfect place to do it. Samantha gained so much more than she expected from her time in Japan.
Whilst this book shows the consequences of what happened in Part One, the story felt ‘lighter' this time and there were parts that had me laughing out loud; usually when Thomas and Samantha were involved. Abigail Drake takes the reader on an unexpected journey as she throws in surprises and keeps you guessing until the end if Thomas is ‘lucky number five’ for Samantha.
Next up is book 2 of the Passports and Promises series, Delayed Departure, which is Bethany’s story.
After book 1, I couldn't wait to start book 2. We pick up just where book 1 left off, with Samantha heading to Japan. She tries to keep to herself, but a charming (he gets less obnoxious, really) rugby player creeps in and won't take no for an answer. I liked Thomas. Samantha seems to really come into her own in Japan. There is a part of the story that will just rip your heart out, and the fallout is just a crazy downward spiral. I don't want to say too much, but if you read book 1, you have to finish the story with this one. But keep the tissues handy. I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
