I've read all of Yount's books to date, and it seems each is better than the previous. Thief of Dreams is my favorite. The characters and their lives are described in a way that makes them fully human. This is a novel that is in every way as honest, authentic, and real as fiction can be. Yount is one of America's best novelists.

This book is a beautifully told story of a broken family and what happens to the boy caught in the middle.

The descriptions of middle America, graphic sex, true childhood friendships, and how they fall apart are glistening and the language is fantastic.

One of the best books I've ever read. Set in Appalachia in the 1940s, the book remains true to its setting and characters, and creates a fine portrait of a boy who is seeking a masculine role model.
