About the author

A New York Times notable and multiple award– winning author, Elizabeth Hand has written seven novels, including the cult classic Waking the Moon, and short-story collections. She is a longtime contributor to numerous publications, including the Washington Post Book World and the Village Voice Literary Supplement. She and her two children divide their time between the coast of Maine and North London.

I liked the mixture of the classic mythology that the protagonist is translating with her own experience, but this pushed my post-apocalypse button (i.e., I’m not a fan of the sub-genre), even if, in this case, the apocalypse was on an extremely slow burn. Hand is a great writer, able to capture characters extremely well, but I needed more story with my characterization than what I was given here.

I definitely wouldn't put this in the science fiction camp, even though it apparently takes place in the future. I was left disappointed. This story is more of a long description of a place and a feeling more than a story where anything actually happens.
