Offers advice on choosing the right clothes and the right luggage, different kinds of bags, preparing for airport security, packing for different kinds of travel, packing for children, and staying safe and healthy while traveling.
Susan Foster provides good information that isn't too outdated. What makes this book special is that she acknowledges that her way isn't the only way and encourages readers to take her advice as inspiration and make the concepts work for the individual. The suggestions for what can easily be sewn are a nice extra, but the illustrations of suggested outfits for men and women are even better. By looking at the pictures, the reader can get almost as much information as by reading the text. Even though the suggested clothing tends towards business conservative, the ideas can be used with many styles.
The packing methods and amount of luggage required falls in the middle of carry-on only and packing to the limit. For the middle-of-the-road traveler who wants enough items to be confident and comfortable, but few enough luggage pieces to be able to handle on one's own, Smart Packing is worth the read. For those with travel styles farther on either side of the spectrum, the ideas are a starting point.
I just finished this book. I have the edition published in 2004. It's a little dated in the security section, but all in all a great reference for someone who needs helps traveling light. It also provides safety and security tips.
