Employing equal measures of wit and wisdom, Emmy Award-winning composer/writer/producer (The Young and the Restless, The Nanny, Half & Half) David M. Matthews leads you on an amusing yet highly informative journey through the seamy underbelly of the male mind. Shameless in its honesty and lacking any pretext of political correctness, Every Man Sees You Naked explores the myths about men and answers the questions you've been dying to ask but didn't quite know how.
Among other things, this book will reveal: • The disconcerting truth about why guys ask you out • The surprising things men like and what they really hate • What men truly look for in a woman • What guys secretly want in bed • How to understand what a man is actually saying • What motivates guys to behave in the odd way they do • The 'dirty little secrets' the men in your life are keeping • Who 'man's best friend' really is (and no, it's not you, the dog, or the TV remote) • Why almost everything you believe to be true about men, isn't
Finally the truth is just a few page turns away. So, why are you still wasting time reading this description?
David M. Matthews’ career in Hollywood has been varied, to say the least. He served as Musical Director for three years on the CBS soap, “The Young and the Restless” for which he won an Emmy for Outstanding Musical Direction and Composition. During his tenure at “Y and R,” he also executive produced a well-received album containing performances by several of the show’s stars, distributed by Nuance-MCA Records. He then moved on to sitcom writing, where he penned scripts for “The Nanny” (CBS) and “Living Single” (FOX), as well as staff writing and producing gigs on “For Your Love” (NBC/WB), and “Half & Half” (UPN). Subsequently he successfully teamed with filmmaker, Michael Bayouth on the screenplays for “A Howl In One” and “Kidnight” and helped produce the documentary, “A Musical Journey To Freedom.” He has continued to write music for TV and film, composing dramatic underscore for “Valhalla,” “The Last Frontier,” “Western Avenue” and “Wave Babes,” to name just a few. In 2010, David's feature directorial debut, "N-Secure," was released in theaters nationwide.
David, a transplanted Ohio native, currently resides in a Los Angeles suburb with his wife, Carla. He recently wrote and produced an episodic mockumentary, “When Actors Need Money,” for Strike TV, and has just wrapped production on a reality show spoof, “How We Think They Did It.” His first book, “Every Man Sees You Naked: An Insider’s Guide to How Men Think,” inspired by a lifetime of being the “relationship advice guru” for his numerous female friends and co-workers, was published by Wheatmark in 2008.
You may be thinking ‘Who needs a guide to the way men think?’ and I’ll admit I thought it too. But then I thought about all the times my husband has baffled me because he didn’t understand something or about the silly arguments we get into because of a simple misunderstanding. So, I decided to give David Matthews’ book a try and I’m glad I did. In his book, Matthews goes over common myths women have about men, what men want from women, both in bed and in a relationship, dating scenarios, and much more. He answers some questions from real women and some of those answers may just astonish you. Some of Matthews’ claims were predictable (Men like sex.) but some just blew me away. Matthews will tell you things most men would deny because they think you wouldn’t approve. Matthews is straightforward, entertaining, and brutally honest. He understands the way men and women think and is able to illustrate the differences between the two with examples. He is somehow able to translate between the men thought process and the women thought process. I’m definitely looking forward to reading his next book. While reading Every Man Sees You Naked: An Insider’s Guide to How Men Think, there were times that I was surprised, and even appalled at times, by the claims Matthews makes. So, I asked my husband to verify the information I was skeptical of. Of course I had to convince him I wanted his honest answer and promise that I wouldn’t get mad at him for anything he said in response. Everything he said reaffirmed what Matthews had claimed. It also opened up some very interesting conversations. Every woman should read Every Man Sees You Naked: An Insider’s Guide to How Men Think. You will walk away feeling like you have a better understanding of the men in your life, or at least how they think. It will more than likely help you with your relationships. Before I read this book, I knew that men and women think differently, but I didn’t really understand how men think and how their thinking differs from ours. While there may have been a few things I would have been more comfortable not knowing, the vast majority of the information is extremely useful and priceless for any woman in a relationship with a man or wanting to be in one.
This book is jam-packed full of insight! While this author entertains throughout with funny, creative thoughts -- the information provided is so clear, so useful... such an eye-opener! It's like the first look under the hood of a new car; if nothing in there looks familiar... we feel damn lucky the car comes with a book explaining the location of the basic fluids, why it does what it does, and how to handle it (er...properly care for it, but whatever) ... right?!?! Up until now, it's been women struggling to understand men without a manual that gives it to us straight. Now we have that manual!!
I'm thinking this book should be 'Required Reading' for any young woman just entering the dating world; any woman re-entering the dating world after a long time away; or for that matter, ANY woman wondering why men drive her crazy! How 'bout that close friend or co-worker who is talking endlessly about how much she loves her guy, but just can't understand him or the things he does. Get her a copy of this book as a much-needed gift -- she'll finally get it!! Enjoy!!
My first reaction: "Men are jerks! If this is really what they are like, then why waste any time with them?!"
My second reaction: "So that's what my husband has been trying to tell me, only in a subtler (or not so subtle) way."
And thus went my feelings throughout the book: disgusted, then enlightened, then disgusted again.
The book was highly entertaining, well written, easy to read, and humorous.
That being said, it was a bit graphic for my taste. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but a closest friend, let alone actually talk to people about it. Call me pretentious, but I would find it embarrassing.
And I wouldn't want to meet the author in person. I would constantly be thinking about what he was thinking about and be completely embarrassed. At least I can live in denial with most guys!
On the other hand, this book just might help out a few male/female relationships, or at least open up communication between the man and the woman. Maybe even mine. (Not that men would care about improved communication unless sex is involved.) And if it did that, then this book has deserves a good review.
This question in Matthews' quiz sums up the biggest benefit I gained: "Your guy accidentally lets it slip how attractive he thinks Scarlett Johansson is. What he really means is: a) She's pretty and sexy and you're a cow; b) She's pretty and sexy and you could never, ever, possibly satisfy him as long as that bitch is alive; c) She's pretty and sexy and he's hoping you'll pick up on the fact that he's dissatisfied with your relationship and is trying to let you down softly so that he might be free to pursue his beloved Scarlett; d) She's pretty and sexy and it has absolutely nothing to do with you."
Now that I know the answer, I feel much better about life and think many of my relationship tensions will disappear.
And if you don’t know the answer, you will definitely want to read this book. Most men are jerks, true, but not complicated jerks…
Yes Virginia, men can be pigs. But didn't we already know that? Written with truth, humor and more than a bit of satire and pathos, author David Matthews tells us that what we already thought is true; to some degree. Then he further clarifies the why for us all. In an enteraining and enjoyable way, he explains why they think this way, and perhaps how women may also be at fault for this thought process. As a woman, you either know it, accept it and work with and around it, or you spend a lifetime looking for something that doesn't really seem to exist.
Does he paint men as shallow, sex-driven critters? Yes. Does this reflect poorly on them? Sure. While many women and probably some men will be insulted and consider this to be a step back for us all, taking exception to everything written; even more of us will laugh and recognize our loved ones and ourselves within. And what's wrong with laughing at human nature now and then? I loved this book, and wish I had come across it years ago, back when I was young, naive and innocent (ok, maybe I was never that naive or innocent)but it can help you take the blinders off and look at the game of relationships and the dating game in a more realistic manner. I heartily recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor about life
Would I recommend EVERY MAN SEES YOU NAKED: AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO HOW MEN THINK to other adults?...Yes, it is hilarious, but I’d definitely say take the information “facts” with a grain of salt. Because, although I do believe a lot of what David states is probably true for many men, I think the generalizations are pretty liberal. There are a few blanked statements that would be more a personality trait then an “all men think this way”. Just because you’re female and moderately attractive doesn’t mean that every man in your life has at some point wanted to sleep with you; because not all men find all types/ages/races/shapes attractive, it’s just not true. But yes, if you’re a super hottie with a slamming body, then yes of course every man that crosses your path (young or old) probably has or will get a reaction from their nether regions (whether they like it or not).
There were a few other points I’d take issue with in this book (as far as my hubby goes at least) but David did offer the disclaimer that he is generalizing and realizes that although his generalizations do apply to most men, that of course there are always exceptions… I have extra sensitive guy and I’m more strait forward then many women, so we often joke that I’m the dude in the relationship.
Aside from that, I’d say all the actual bedroom stuff and what men want is probably spot on. I think David does a pretty good job nailing down the communication issues between men and women as well. And whether you choose to take some, all or none of the information provided as fact, you’re sure to have a good laugh either way.
This book was ok. It kind of gave me some insight into my husbands brain. No, I still haven’t figured him out (we’ve been married for 30 yrs), but I do understand him a little better now. It is a little explicit in spots, so read at your own risk. The author admits he is generalizing what is true of a lot of the population and laying it upon all males, but he suspects most men fall within some shade of gray between what this book says and the lies we tell ourselves about genders.
David Matthews is not a great writer and tries way too hard with his puns and witty sidenotes. This short book only succeeds in being disheartening and presenting a less-than-flattering view of men.
