Tootle the train, star of one of the bestselling Little Golden Books of all time, chugs into his first Step into Reading book!
Fans of Tootle the train will now be able to read about him all on their own! This Step 1 Step into Reading title has been adapted for early readers from the original Little Golden Book story. Freshly illustrated in the style of the earlier book, which was written by Gertrude Crampton and illustrated by Tibor Gergely, this sweet tale about Tootle--and the important lesson he learns at Train School--is the perfect addition to the Step into Reading line.
Step 1 Readers feature big type and easy words for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading. Rhyme and rhythmic text paired with picture clues help children decode the story.
I can appreciate that it's important for a train to stay on the rails (obviously). But it rubs me wrong when I think about what kids will take away from the story. Tootle likes to go fast, and he doesn't like flags. He finds something - the meadow - that makes him incredibly happy, but it's against the rules and so all the humans band together and terrify him into staying on the tracks forever. I'd rather have Tootle learn why it's important to stay on the tracks (safety!). Otherwise, instead of kids learning that sometimes there are rules we don't like, but they protect us, they just learn that you have to blindly obey or you'll get yelled at.
Adapted from the classic for beginning readers. Tootle learns how to behave in trains school, but gets into trouble when he goes off the rails outside of the classroom.
