La aparición del cartel en la forma que actualmente conocemos se remonta a 1870, época en que la perfección de las técnicas de litografía en color posibilitó su producción en serie. Apenas fue necesario un siglo para conocer el cartel como una forma de arte vivo; cautivó a los artistas más destacados de aquél momento, entre los cuales cabe destacar a Toulouse-Lautrec, a los diseñadores de art nouveau , simbolistas y cubistas, artistas y tipógrafos revolucionarios de la Bauhaus y de Stijl, y a los hippies y la cultura underground de los sesenta. John Barnicoat analiza en este libro las conexiones que existen entre el arte, demandas comerciales, política, testimonio popular y otros factores sociológicos que intervienen en la producción de carteles. Esta obra muestra 273 reproducciones de carteles, de los cuales 72 son en color.

The composition of this book it’s quiet a mess

I read the edition from Thames & Hudson world of art. A book about posters in black and white pages? Come on. The writing style is so boring and confusing, I had to search through the Internet to get a better description of some of the art styles. The layout and the organization of the text and the images is so confusing. Disappointing.

Me generó mucha desesperación la arbitrariedad cronológica con la que están dispuestas las imágenes (cabe la pena destacar que son el 50% del libro), me hacía tener que avanzar y retroceder constantemente, dificultando la lectura. Más allá de eso, está bueno. Una línea de tiempo no viene mal.

This book is such a slog. It's like reading someone's badly written thesis. Only redeeming quality is the reproductions.
