One of the best introductory refining textbooks i have came across, gives a clear overview about refinery’s different units and operations. This book is cuts straight to the point and gives insight from the industry For the novice in this field. It is always a great way to look at the big picture for people involved in the industry too.
What a great book for a new engineer in refining, I wish I had read this years ago. The layout is very logical and the snarky comments throughout make it quite enjoyable. I know this is essentially a textbook but I would (and probably will) read this again, or at least reference it.
This book gave an excellent overview of petroleum refining without getting bogged down in minutiae or droning on in the style of dry reference tomes. The author reminds us once in a while that he is human with a witty blurb here and there.
I read this book to get a grasp on terms like "cat cracker", "fractionation" and "isobutane" and I was completely satisfied with what I came away with. I now have a good enough grasp on what goes on in the refining world that I can stop with the bewildered looks when those kinds of terms come up.
This book was set on my desk for each internship, and I never read more than a few chapters. I figured it'd be a good time to get back into the industry mindset and review unit ops. This book is good for a high level overview and definitely a great read for interns, who have little exposure to refinery op. Glad to have finally read it, but I'm also well aware that this book does not go into great detail.
Great book for those interested. Despite the title, it's pretty technical language unless you were an engineer in college, but its still accessible. You would have to be interested in refining to begin with, ie intellectually curious or have a professional interest, in order for this to be worth your while.
I’m a civil engineer entering into the petroleum refining industry. As such my info on petroleum is limited at best, however this book has thus far given me a tremendous amount of info on this subject, enough to be able to discuss the particulars with others in the field. Highly recommended.
Awesome book. Perfect balance between getting into the details and making it readable. Goes in depth on each unit of a refinery, as well as the chemistry of hydrocarbons, what products are, napthenes, aromatics, RVP, API weight and whatnot. Best book I’ve read on the industry.
It is just what is says on the tin - a book about petroleum refining in nontechnical language. It allows a glimpse into the complex world of actual processing methods and different trade-offs involved in deciding what would be the most profitable strategy for a refinery.
Very good for a beginner to refining !! Goes over concepts in a level of detail which is perfect for this level. I would like more detail but that is NOT what this book is for !!!
Great book for a non-technical person who needs to know what all the fuss is about. Highly recommended reading for any finance types in the oil & gas business.
