It was Christmas Eve and as the sun shone into the hen house, the chicken awoke with happy thoughts of Christmas and wandered out into the farmyard.

There was nobody in the farmyard, the sleigh was muddy and empty, the harnesses hung on the wall and Chicken could see that the reindeer were fast asleep. 'Has everyone forgotten about Christmas?' thought Chicken.

Worried, Chicken went off to seek Santa and found him ill in bed, too ill to deliver Christmas presents. 'Calamity,' she thought and rushed off to tell the other animals. Chicken first went to the reindeer only to be told that they were too tired to do anything and they suggested that she should go and ask the other animals to help her.

She made an emergency call for all the animals to report to the big barn immediately and at once the silent farm was alive with sleepy animals making their way to the barn. Chicken explained what had happened and told all the animals that they had to help her make Christmas happen.

Needless to say the animals worked very hard to save Christmas; horse and pig loaded the presents, the mice got the harnesses ready and the sheep polished the sleigh. Then Chicken took goat, duck, cat and cow with her to get Santa ready and well enough to drive the sleigh.

They succeeded and Santa boarded the sleigh only to find there were no reindeer so Chicken rushed to the stable only to find that the reindeer hadn't been fed and that they declared that it was too late then as they could never fly on a full stomach.

'Christmas is doomed,' shouted all the animals but Chicken was undaunted and she said that they would pull the sleigh between them. Cow was surprised and pig was scared but they all knew better than to argue with Chicken.

So the farm animals were harnessed up to the sleigh and Santa raised his hand and showered the animals with stars (splendidly represented in the book by plenty of glitter). Suddenly the horse, the goat, the cow, the sheep, the pig and the cat could fly and they circled the farm in a practice run before flying off into the night.

Chicken meanwhile occupied pride of place next to Santa - she puffed up her feathers knowing that she had saved Christmas!

This is a lovely seasonal book (I am sure my friend's little girl, for whom I bought it as a present, will like it), beautifully illustrated by Daniel Howarth and with a plethora of glitter in the final pages!
