Introducing Gemini, a super-hero whose identity is so secret, even he doesn't know what it is! Dan Johnson is just a normal guy with a normal job... or so he thinks. What he doesn't know is that a secret organization is using him as their weapon against crime. It's The Manchurian Candidate meets Spider-Man! From JAY FAERBER, the writer of COPPERHEAD, and the incredible JON SOMMARIVA comes this super-hero adventure full of twists, turns, and action! Collects issues 1 through 5.
This was just a completely random find at my local library, so I didn't really know what to expect. Turned out it was...meh.
For some reason, there is this company that activates and deactiveates a man into his superhero identity (Gemini) and civilian identity (Dan), with neither personality remembering anything of the other. Lab rats/handlers are continually watching through special contact lenses that Gemini wears. All of this we learn as a new female employee is brought in to replace his old handler because of some scandal that happened. Dun, dun, dunnnnnn....
Kind of feels rushed and the resolution happens at super-speed with little to no real reasoning behind it. There's nothing really new here, but it's not a terrible comic and I read it in one sitting.
Set in the same whacky universe as "Noble Causes" and "Dynamo 5" "Gemini" is a short self contained series that introduces a few interesting characters and then ends just as it is getting fun.
Jay Faerber is so good at writing fun books with young characters. Here, that's what we get again, even though its extremely rushed. The idea of an evil corporation creating two separate personas in people and completely control their heroic exploits is super interesting and fun. Sadly, this book was over much too soon. This could have been a much longer series and maybe in was originally intended to be. The ending seemed to come much much too quickly. The art was fun and fitting for the series. Overall, it was a delightful superhero comic that could have been amazing with time to breathe.
I totally enjoyed this collected mini series. Jay Faerber has the ability to set a story smack dab in the middle of a fully formed continuity loaded with history, mystery and recognizable connections. And I love the cartoony art style. This series is action packed and throws an interesting new wrinkle into the typical super hero dynamic. And despite the slightly predictable ending, giving the name of the book, I couldn't put this comic series down.
Superhero comic collection with a Truman Show twist – clever stuff
With cartoony-type illustrations, this comic collection centres around Gemini, a superhero, who is controlled from afar and is not aware of his own secret identity. Things go pear-shaped and other super-heroes become involved. With plenty of action, fighting and a satisfactory conclusion, this comic collection is an entertaining, engaging and well-written work and recommended to all.
