An internationally known scientist joins the bestselling coauthor of "The Melatonin Miracle" to introduce the healing power of the antioxidant network--the different antioxidants that work together with much more strength than they do individually.
Pearson and Shaw made free radicals and antioxidants mainstream with their book "Life Extension" in the 1980s. They put the idea before the public that had been developed in the 1950s that oxygen, while necessary for life, can become "radicalized" and attack DNA and cell membranes. Dr. Packer, the author, has worked to understand this paradox for over 40 years. He runs a lab on this study at the University of California, Berkeley. He says vitamin C, E, Co Q10, Lipoic Acid and Glutathione work together in a "network" and reinforce each other. Furthermore, he says that Lipoic Acid is the antioxidants' antioxidant. It "recycles" antioxidants after they have become radicalized by attacking free radicals. Lipoic Acid is used by diabetics because it regenerates damaged nerve endings. Packer says most of the damage done by diabetes is the direct or indirect result of free radicals. He says the Europeans are decades ahead of us in the treatment of diabetes with Lipoic Acid. Packer has recommendations of dosages for the antioxidants on page 188. This an extremely informative and easily read book.
The knowledge I gained from this book has saved my life. I first read this book as a requirement for my Alternative Medicine College Course and I am so glad I did. The biggest thing learned is that Lipoic Acid strengthens memory and prevents brain aging. After 3 severe car crashes I started to lose my memory of my daughter's upbringing and doctors didn't know what to do. I remember reading after the age of 30 we don't get enough Lipoic Acid so I supplemented with 300mg of R-Lipoic Acid daily to receive the most purest form and after time most all of my memory came back. Thanks Lester for writing The Antioxidant Miracle.
This is a great book giving a clear and detailed explanation on the subject. Lester Packer is a world-renowned researcher with hundreds of scientific publications, but nevertheless he explains what free radicals are and how they wreak havoc in the body in a very simple and interesting way that anyone can read and understand.
The best thing I liked in this book is that in the latter chapters he summarize and suggest what to do with all this information. He tells what foods to eat to get the various antioxidants, and when to add nutrient supplement and how much of what.
Taking the work of Linus Pauling and putting the anti oxidants into a network as even vitamin C doesn't work alone and keeping the format easy to read and understand was a good idea and the book is a solid example of how complex biochemistry can be simplified without loosing its meaning..
finding the importance of word balance in human body... to gain the best health quality in life... and the key is finding your treatment in food miracle...
I wish I had read this book ten to twenty years ago, especially the info on alpha-lipoic acid and Vitamin E. Very helpful information presented by a scientist in an easy to read format.
