My obsession was born of innocence and good intentions, and it began the day I spotted a handwritten journal lying in the bushes outside a townhouse on Lexington Avenue. It was raining sideways that morning, and my plan was to return it the next day; safe and dry.
Only I kept it.
I kept it, and I read it.
A week later, overwhelmed with curiosity and feeling guilty for harboring secrets that didn’t belong to me, I tried to return it.
Only I wasn’t expecting to meet him.
Unapologetically heartless and enigmatically sexy, he claims he knows nothing about the journal I found outside his place, but the reticent glint in his blue-green gaze tells me otherwise.
There’s something different about him; something damaged yet magical, and I’m drawn to him; pulled into his orbit.
There’s just one problem.
The more I get to know him, the more I’m positive the journal belonged to him...
...and the more I find myself hoping, selfishly, that I’m wrong.
Overall Opinion: I messed up I guess. For those of you that read my reviews -- you know that I am not a fan of short books. I obviously didn't notice the note at the bottom of the Amazon (not on GR) blurb stating that this included a "bonus" book. I hate that so much!!! If I want that bonus book I'll get it. This ended at 48% on my kindle app!! I started to worry at about 37ish% because I was thinking that what was going on had to be their big conflict...and it was! I know I might just be upset because it is one of my biggest pet peeves, but I know what I like -- and short books just aren't my cuppa. I feel (like I did in this one) that the characters and overall plot are never gotten into enough for me when it feels like the author is rushing to get stuff in before the end. Ok...*deep breath*. This definitely occurred in this one, as I didn't fully connect with either the characters or the storyline. It's obviously just me, because this has such high ratings and is a "best seller" on Amazon right now...
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Aidy and Ace's story. Aidy find a journal laying on a curb and picks it up. She ends up reading it and finding a love story written by one man that is in love with another man's woman. She decides to return it, and that is when she meets Ace. Ace claims that he doesn't know about the journal, and accuses her of being a stalker because he is a famous baseball player. They keep on running into each other, and call a truce. Eventually they start seeing each other, but as time goes by Aidy is growing more and more concerned that he really is the man from the journal. They do get a HFN ending.
POV: This alternated between Aidy and Ace's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Ok. I never skimmed and thought it flowed wel for the most part, but it did feel really rushed at times. (see above "opinion" section).
Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.
H rating: 3.5 stars. Ace. He was ok...just kinda meh.
h rating: 3 stars. Aidy. She was loyal to her family, but otherwise just ok.
Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed.
Push/Pull: Yes
Heat level: Moderate. They have some good chemistry and scenes.
Descriptive sex: Yes.
Safe sex: Yes. Condoms are mentioned. I don't remember any mention of previous practices.
OW/OM drama: Yes
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Separation: Yes
Possible Triggers: Yes, but mild
Closure: This had ok closure. I would call it a HFN ending .
How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.
Safety: I'd say that this should be Safe for most readers.
"Madre mia, buenísimo este libro"!! So good this was a fantastic book, surprisingly so, didn't read any reviews just went for it blind. I'm glad I did, it made me enjoy it even more.
"Heartless" is the story of Aidy, she is a makeup artist and Ace is a baseball player forced to retired early due to an injury. They meet when she finds a personal journal in front of Ace's house. Her curiosity gets the better of her and so she reads it and is enthralled by the intimate details of a love affair. After a while she decides to returned the journal thus she meets Ace but he denies being the owner of the journal. This journal is an important element in the story, not just because it brings the mc's together but there's also a bit of a mystery. Is Ace the owner of the journal? Who are the other people involved in this affair?
Aidy and Ace start a bit rocky both denying their attraction to each other. Especially Ace, who is serious and doesn't like to socialize. He was a bit cold to Aidy at first, but it was so good to see how he slowly started to warm up to her. Aidy, was a great girl funny and outgoing the total opposite of Ace. Their relationship was a bit of a slow burn, but I enjoyed seeing them date. It made their sex so delicious and intense they definitely had amazing chemistry. This was a quick read, light on angst, sexy, with a brooding bearded, tall and hot H who didn't quite believe in love anymore. But in came a terrific h who was fun and spunky with her red lips and a bag of makeup ready to kiss the H and make him believe in love and hea. <3
Looking forward to reading Dante's story I know the author is continuing this series with the Amato brothers (Ace's brothers) but I hope she does a book with Topaz (Aidy's bff) and why not Gianluca I truly wanna see that man brought down to his knees.
But... did she really thought he was the one, who wrote the journal? The journal was definitely written by a man, who lusted after a taken woman, and who cheated with this woman on her bf.
So, the heroine would be ok to be with a cheater? Nothing romantic about this scenario!
The hero was of course not the one, who stole a taken woman; but the heroine was almost sure he was. Till almost the end of the book.
Either I'm too smart or she isn't. It was 100% clear, that a man, who wrote the journal, was a cheater. 10000 % clear!!!
Freaking loved this book! SO unique and i loved the writing. Surprisingly, i have not read much of this authors' work and i'm definitely adding her books to my TBR list. What a fantastic style she has! I loved Adie- she was all sunshine and brightness to Ace's darkness and broodiness. It all started with an accidental discovery of a private journal and a few chance meetings (fate at it's work perhaps) but i loved how the story unfolded. AMAZING! Highly recommended.
I have read a book from this author (royal) and I loved it so I know she is good but this one was jst there for me. I jst couldn't connect with the story....it didn't flow for me. It wasn't bad but I wanted more...didn't get that. I couldn't wait to finish it so I could get to the next book.
This was my very first book by this author and it won't be my last. I loved both the determined yet idealistic Aidy and the reclusive alpha Ace Amato. Aidy(Adelaide) and her sister have launched an app which connects New York City make-up artists with clients and business is good. Aidy is fighting the rain on her way home from a client appointment when she sees a journal in the bushes. Curiosity gets the best of her and she ends up taking it home....and reading it....and romanticizing about the man who writes such tormented passages about the forbidden woman he loves. Aidy tries to return it to the doorstep of the townhouse where she found it and runs into a very pissed off Alessio "Ace" Amato, former baseball all star and the man she believes is the author. Without giving anything away, Aidy finds herself accidentally running into him over the course of a few weeks and they can not deny the sparks between them. As their relationship begins to develop, Aidy feels him holding back while she is falling for him, hard. She knows Ace is hiding something and Aidy is strong enough to demand answers. Ace is afraid to trust Aidy, because he's been there and he got burned, badly. Aidy gets her answers at her sister's engagement party when Ace sees a friend from his past. I won't delve further into it, because I don't want to spoil anyones enjoyment. A well written all around fun book, not too heavy but not without a few twists and turns and perfect for a light quick read.
This is very much a safe book. Almost non existent angst, characters were almost adults in behaviour, they all wanted commitment, they were all on the same page (almost), not too much of OW/OM drama, believable HEA. This is my happy place book. Ace is my new book bf. Ace doesn't do meaningless hookup. He was surprised when he hooked up so soon with Aidy and it was Aidy who was the free spirit and initially treating this as a weekend fling. He was rather elated to have her back, he was not taking it slow because he wanted a fling. He already pointed out he doesn't do meaningless hookup, so it is special for him, but she also mentioned she's a free spirit so he wants to give her space and is trying to learn from his past mistake (points taken for not really going into detail as to what exactly happened except for cheating). As Aidy mentioned she hasn't been on proper dates recently, what does Ace do? Take her out on dates, not movies and dinner, thoughtful creative proper dates. Only drawback, he doesn't wanna talk about past. Aidy also being a little insecure, makes wrong assumptions, about the depth and nature of his feelings towards her and the ex. If he says it's not his journal, woman, it's not his fucking journal! This leads to a very temporary break in their relationship. But apart from that, smooth sailing, as I said, not much angst because I think they got my memo about communication being the key :D
WHAT?????? How does this book not have a higher rating??? It has everything you need in a book to make it interesting….conflict, angst, humor, hot sex, and even a little mystery. I’m very confused!
Adelaide Aidy Kincaid is stuck under an awning one day on Lexington Avenue, due to the rain, when she spots a journal full of a personal love story. She is obsessed by the entries in it but knows she needs to return it to its rightful owner. When she tries to return it to the front steps of the home where she found it she is met with a guy that is a real jerk….a sexy jerk but still a jerk. He insists it isn’t his but she feels as if he just doesn’t want to admit it. As luck would have it (bad or good) she ends up running into him several more times during the week and each time he is just as bad as the first time if not worse.
Alessio “Ace” Amato was forced to retire from his pro baseball career early due to an injury. Now he is lost and cranky all the time………it appears there might be more to it but he is closed up tight.
These two characters are great Aidy is sweet and bubbly but not in an annoying way. Ace is flawed and broody but still kind in his own way. I still believe this book deserves a much higher rating and hopefully my rate will help to bump it a bit!!
This was a good book and I loved the premise. Aidy finds a journal and reads it before attempting to return it to the potential owner. She seriously became obsessed with it. So when she finally attempts to return it, she is shocked when the potential owner is nasty and denies it belonging to him. Can you say total jerk! BUT, I didn't realize he was a former pitcher with a career ending injury so I guess he had the right to be a little cranky! And his name was Ace! Love that!
My only complaint about this book is it was a little predictable. Once all the characters were introduced, I guessed exactly what was going on. But it was still worth the read!
😂🤣 Also mein Geschmack trifft diese Story null.

3 stars. I was enjoying this story up until the author turned the heroine into an idiot by not allowing her to rub two brain cells together. The mystery of the journal was pretty obvious from a very early point in the book, and yet, the heroine was dumber than a box of rocks and couldn’t figure it out.
The heroine finds a journal and reads it. It contains the writings of a man rambling about how much he loves a woman who’s already engaged to another man, how she loves him too, but that they can’t be together because she loves her fiancé as well. The heroine thinks his writing is captivating and oh-so romantic. 🥴🥴 I already questioned her sanity at this point, because what’s romantic about perusing and pining over another man’s fiancée?? Anyways, the heroine returns the journal to where she found it, wanting to get it back to the writer, but instead she runs into the hero, who is insulting and tells her that he doesn’t want her journal and to go away. Following, are several other coincidental events that bring the hero and heroine together, there’s a definite element of fate at work here. The hero and heroine get to know each other and start to get feelings, there’s a bunch of drama, the heroine behaving like a total moron, but then they are reunited and the HEA and epilogue are really sweet.
The thing is, the heroine was a really great character, except for all the GLARING issues surrounding the journal. Between not realizing who the journal belonged to until she’s told, and thinking that the writer is SOOOO romantic, I really lost my love for this heroine. She could have been awesome if given half a brain. The hero was pretty decent, but his inability to communicate really exasperated me. At the end of the day, their problems came from a lack of communication, which isn’t my personal cuppa.
Safe; no virgins 🎉, both celibate prior to meeting and during their separation 🎉🎉, no OM drama, some OW drama with the H’s ex (but he wants nothing to do with her), no cheating, no scenes with OM/OW.

I've read most of the books by Winter Renshaw, and so far my favorite had been Royal. This is definitely as good, if not better. I read it in one day.
I don't think the summary/synopsis does it justice. It is accurate, but it didn't make me desperate to read the book. In reality, this is a standalone, dual point of view romance novel about a strong, self assured, independent woman (Aidy) and the broken, "heartless", former MLB star (Ace) who have the universe throwing them together. As usual, there are twist and turns - a "mystery" that is not hard to anticipate, but still enjoyable to watch play out between the characters and the storyline.
The romance is steamy and it is definitely low angst. I love the dual POV that really helps advance the story.
I love when the women are strong and the story is about the building of a relationship with strength - not "saving" the heroine. Aidy is a really great character and Ace's "flaws" are reasonable - plus he is able to pull himself together from within himself.

3 of my favorite quotes:
"But today? I'm taking the low road because that man, that jerk, deserves it, whoever he is. Fucking asshole ..."
“No part of me believes this is actually happening, and I don't think it'll feel real until we're cruising down the interstate wondering what the ratio of fun to awkwardness will be this weekend.”
This book was so good. I really loved everything about it. I really love the heroines that Winter writes and Aidy was no different. She was strong and willing to stand up for herself but you could see that sweetness underneath and tell she was a romantic just by how she clung to the journal she found. Ace was broody and shut down but you could see that romantic in him deep down too. I like how he said he doesn’t sleep with people he doesn’t love. Right there I could tell the relationship between them would grow to more. I love the conflict in this story. You kind of hoped the guy in the journal got the woman he wanted but if that was Ace, I felt for Aidy because she wanted that all-encompassing love and if Ace felt that for someone else she would always be second best. My conclusions about who the journal belonged to was almost spot on and the reasons it was on Aces steps was almost what I thought too. The story gets a little twist in it closer to the end and I really liked the resolution to the conflict and the end to the story. Winter just gets better and better in her writing so i was not surprised that I loved this book. I really recommend it.
2.5 stars I think I'm in the minority but I expected this to go on longer than 48%. You then start a different couples story. That said it was a nice short read, I really liked Aidy and how she got to meet the H Ace. Out running one day she finds a journal on the step outside a house but it's pouring with rain so she takes it home with her on the premise Aidy will return it to the rightful owner. Curiosity gets the better of her and she takes a look inside. It's a journal of a man's heartache losing the girl he loved to another man. Aidy wants to find out if the journal belongs to the house owner so she takes it back only to find a gorgeous hunk of a man and things don't go to plan as Ace thinks she's a mad stalker and denies it's his journal. I really liked the twist in the story and both Ace and Aidy were interesting characters. I think the plot could have been a bit meatier because a few side characters felt like dressings and no point to them. I got this on my kindle unlimited so I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.
Re-read, love it Safe read No cheating, no other's persons scenes ***************** Wow. Hurts sooo good, stings and heals... love Alessio soo soo much.
Hands down, this book is terrific. Actually, all of Winter's books are terrific. Read them all, you won't be disappointed. In this book, the main characters are Ace and Aidy. From the very first paragraph I was hooked. Best beginning to a book yet! All of the character are very well developed and you can actually identify with each of them. For Ace being a professional athlete, he is a stand up guy with deep emotions without having a massive ego. Aidy is a terrific hard working, honest gal with strong family ties. I loved all the twists and turns in this novel. It has emotion, humor, excitement and intrigue all wrapped up in this wonderful book. It kept me addicted until I read the very last word. Good thing my boss didn't catch me reading when I was supposed to be working. Even so, it would have been well worth it even if I had. Winter Renshaw does it again with another amazing book of art! I received this arc in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Winter!
